I'm looking to replace my current handgun, a FM90 which is quite inaccurate, with a more accurate and "more modern" service handgun.

The few that I'm looking at right now is the SIG SP2022, Beretta PX4, Springfield XD but I am open for recommendations.

What do you guys recommend? By the way I don't like Glocks so I'm going to pass on that.

I can shoot more accurately with other handguns so I know its not me.

Beretta 92s I have always found more accurate than most others. They are a big handgun though and very forgiving to shoot.

"Accuracy is in the eye of the ... "

All contemporary pistols come with sights -- and some have many options. You may have the wrong sights on your rejected Glock. But I suggest it's only your prejudice. I mean, you are certainly correct in your mind that you "can't" shoot G-s well. But there are over 7,ØØØ,ØØØ other buyers and happy owners who CAN and DO shoot well with right-outa-the-box Glocks. More Glocks have been sold since the first G-19 iteration than all other pistols combined, excluding G.I. contract weapons. "I can shoot more accurately with other handguns so I know its not me." And your hand may just be uncomfortable with the G- guns, but have you tried G-s single-stacks? Dao.

99% of the time it is the Indian not the arrow. All the guns you mentioned and that others have mentioned are more accurate than most shooters.

You are asking a question which is impossible for us to answer.... you are asking which gun will I shoot better.

For example the Cz75 B is reasonably accurate 9mm but I do not shoot it well due to its size... How would anyone else know that? You are asking a subjective question but asking for an objective answer....

In order to even start to give an informed and meaningful response we need more info.

Do you prefer DA/SA or a consistent trigger pull like a DAO or SA gun?
Do you want a manual safety?
Besides the FM90 What other guns do you like?
Did you not like the ergos of the BHP clone or is it simply a poorly functioning pistol?
What do you mean by more modern?
What are you using the gun for? Home defense, range only, carry a mix?
How big are your hands?
How long are your fingers?
What is it you do not like about the Glock?

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Without all this info people are simply telling you what they shoot well or what they like... which in the end is irrelevant to your OP. IMHO

I just don't like Glocks, they are uncomfortable in my hand. My FM90 (Argentian Hi Power) has a heavy trigger because of the mag safety disconnect that I have given up removing and requires just too much attention to get a good group with. I'm sure I haven't unlocked the full potential with this handgun but I would rather move on to something that I can get a good holster for it and more accessories.

I'm trying to get a list of guns to try out.

Go to a shop and hold some. #1 criteria for choosing a hand gun IMHO is how does it feel in your hand. Can you reach the trigger with a proper grip. Does it point naturally? All of these things come into play. I would go and hold/handle 10 to 15 guns at a shop and see what you like.

I forgot to ask what caliber are you looking at? I assumed 9mm

IF you are looking for a list here you go. Some of these will have to be used to meet your $500 price point.

  • S&W M&P
  • 1911 9mm
  • Used Browning hi Power
  • Sig SP 2022
  • XD or XDM
  • Berettea 92 FS
  • Beretta 92 compact
  • Ruger SR9
  • FNP or FNX
  • CZ 75B
  • CZ P01
  • CZ PCR
  • CZ Phantom
  • CZ Compact
  • CZ Sp01

All meet your criteria.

I would try to take the mag disconnect out of the FM90 before you ditch it. It should take you less than 30 minutes the first time you do it. If you need instructions PM me.

I've tried, I can't get the trigger pivot pin to budge. Plus holsters for this gun are pretty much non exsistant because this one has a 1911 style slide. I would like to get a SIG because of how well I can shoot with one, but I lack the funds to get one aside from the SP2022. Does anyone know how well it performs versus a P229 or a P226?

It has a longer DA trigger pull but it is very smooth. Some people prefer it to the standard P series DA. It is a different design entirely. The SA is the same as any other Sig. It will run with the P229 or P226. I have one and like it a lot. I also have a P228/P226/P220/P245/P225 etc... contrary to what some others here think I like Sigs.

If you are looking for one get a triple serial numbered gun with night sights like this one. They are finished in ilaflon and have the original internal extractor. Sig has cheapened the newer version. The one below is a great deal... at $450 shipped.

You'll need to find a range with a pile of possible rentals.

I like 1911s because of the slim single stack grip, but I have tiny hands. Double stacks and double actions kill me because of the extra reach.

I have a 1911 with a bad trigger that is accurate off a sandbag, but then I jerk down and left with a vengance because of how easy it is to anticipate trigger break. A trigger job and some practice will make this "inaccurate" pistol more "accurate" because it fixes the shooter issue.

You just gotta try a few and see how you shoot them.

-J.

Edit: Oh, and I think Sigs have decent triggers, and a CZ trigger can be really sweet with a trigger job. Again I'm terribly biased towards 1911-style single action triggers.

If you are looking for a Sig like trigger and gun on a budget look at the FNX pistols. They are sub $500 OTD and are very Sig like in their setup.

They also can be carried cocked and locked but in the end you need to go put your hands on these guns and then shoot the ones that feel best. I always tell people if you do it right a gun is going to pick you more than you are going to pick a gun.

What are you a Midget? The 92 is one of the most comfortable pistols out there : )

P.S. If you are a midget, no offense implied. You can now buy the 92FS Compact from Buds!

It simply does not fit everyones hand properly. It is way toooooooooo wide in the grip for its capacity. It has a long DA length of pull. It is not for everyone. I see people shooting them all the time with a modified and IMHO less than optimal grip. If you want to shoot well you should not be adjusting your grip to fit the gun. You need to pick or change the gun to fit your hand.

The compact does not change the length of the DA pull. It shortens the grip and lowers the 92s capacity to 10 +1 IIRC.

I disagree, I think it is one of the easiest and softest shooting pistols around. But hey, its ok to disagree eh?:) I have seen many new shooters with small hands fire the 92FS without issue.

Of the 4 9 mms that I have 2 92 FS 1 American and 1 italian,P225 and a CZ 75b the Cz shoots the best for me next the 92s and the P225 comes in last.

CZ's are great pistols! I don't have any more right now. My favs for the range are the Beretta 92 and Sig P226. I carry a S&W 3913 though.

Springfield XD. I have had my XD45 for a little over a year now, and the accuracy is getting better and better. With the cheap winchester 230 grn round nose ammo, I put all 13 rounds into less then 2" at 25 feet. At 75 feet, I put all 13 rounds into 10". Thats good enough to get the bad guy IMO.

Moose, how is the accuracy of the XD's? I have yet to fire one but I love the 1911 grip angle they have incorporated.

Cool Moose! Looks like a few of those were reflecting back and hitting you on the head!! My Buddy has an XD 45 that I want to go shoot soon. I would probably take an XD over a Glock but that is just my preference. Thanks for the video!
