most fun rifle for the $$?

For the $ I'll ad a vote for the Henry lever. More accurate than the Ruger 10/22 in the stock configuration -which is also a great value and a fun rifle.

I'm torn between a Ruger 10/22 and Marlin 39A as my favorite fun guns. There is something about lever guns that are just fun.

i have to say the Mosin Nagants ,if it was 10years ago i would have said sks but now there 300$+

Hi Point 995 is a pretty fun little accurate carbine, cheap to shoot and with +P+ ammo can be used for more serious purposes.

Fella's;

My vote: Ruger 10/22. Why? Because you can do anything you want to with it. It's the werewolf of guns. It can morph to something else 7 times a week if you want to spend the money to change it.

I'd hate to have to do the comparison between them to get a definative answer, but the 10/22 may have more "stuff" available for it than the 1911 platform. And that's sayin' something.

Wow, now there is a difficult question to answer. For me, the .22LR is king-of-the-hill. The chosen rifle I guess depends on how much someone can afford to drop into it. Even point of rationality doesn't lock-in a definitive winner.

I will simply say the least expensive .22LR that I own is my Savage Mark II. She's a gem for accuracy, and had a sweet trigger. She isn't the prettiest gal on the block, but she's sweet enough for me, and just enough tomboy to be fun.

Sorry, I do tend to personify my firearms...and "Stella", my former Mustang 5.0.

If fortunate enough to live near certain surplus rifle businesses,
one should be able to buy a 91/30 and then order 440 rds. of exotic ammo for about $200 total. This is based on a MN priced at $100 or less with tax.

you are correct. i did my math based on a rifle 800+ rounds of ammo. but typed 440

figure 100$ locally for a MN, 150-160 for 800 or 880 rounds.

if you have a C&R or live near some of the big name importers/dealers the prices drop quickly.

say, 70$ for the rifle, still about 150 for the ammo.

rmuzz,

I love the M1 Carbine, it is just a joy to shoot, recoil is very light. My nephew is my shooting partner, and no other gun puts a smile on his face like the carbines. For sheer enjoyment it is the winner in my book and the my girl likes it too.

That said, the ammo for the carbine is not cheap, so to honestly answer the question the good ol' 22 caliber reigns supreme. The cost of ammo makes plinking all day a friendly proposition to your wallet. Pick the type of 22 you like, buy a thousand rounds for next to nothing, get some fun targets (cans, bottles and the like) and work on your form and your peace of mind at the same time.

Marlin 60 for out of the box accurate fun.
10/22 for the ultimate erector set rifle on a budget.

As wonderful as I think the 10/22 is, I disagree with the idea that it is the most fun to shoot. I personally prefer the marlin 795. It shoots like a laser beam and is easier to take down than the 10/22 in my opinion. However, both are superb rifles and with 22lr being the cheapest ammo out there, they can be shot for hours on end.

I'd vote SKS or Mauser, however a 10/22 can be quite fun for the money as well, and since ammo is so cheap, makes it an even greater value, but maybe not as fun because you don't get as big of a "bang".

I would say it all depends on what one calls fun. If all I want to do is plink, U.S. 30 cal. Carbine.

But mostly any more precision accuracy from a single shot bolt action Bench rifle. Putting 5 rds in 1 hole as near to .22 cal as possible. Holes the size of a dime at 50 or 100 yds don't cut it anymore.

Only accurate arms are interesting. But thats what comes with age maybe.

Don't matter if you agree, it's what you like :neener: Otherwise all the old guys would never let us shoot anything other than a 1911 and a Garand, BORING :)

I like the 795 also, great gun. But just as easy as the 10/22 to take down. One screw, pull it out. Does that sound dirty.

If fun is defined as:
Shooting as fast as you can as much as you can... the Mossberg Plinkster wins @ $80-$100 new.

If fun is defined as:
Accuracy... most any bolt action will out perform a semi (without extensive modification).....
A good Romanian trainer for $75 bucks is amazingly accurate and of course uses the most inexpensive ammo.

I bought an SKS for 85 dollars years ago at a place in Swissvale, Pa. I was living in Wilkinsburg at the time.( a bad area to live in them, and worse now). When I took the gun accross the street to go into my home, the street had a bunch of local hoodlums on it. When they saw the SKS and me with a western hat, they yelled out, THERE IS A WHITE MAN WIF A MACHINE GUN. The street was INSTANTLY CLEAR. That was the most fun I have ever had for 85 dollars.

Black powder 50 cal, take your pick. I've seen 'em for $100 and up. I gave 180 for my Hawken Hunter carbine from Cabelas 18 years ago.

SKS for 75 bucks is a fun gun, that was about the same time period I got the 50. I also got a Norinco paratrooper carbine (16" barrel) for $115.

Also about that time, I picked up an 80 dollar Hakim battle rifle. That one is WAY fun. :D Kinda like a mini semi auto BAR.

10/22 is a lot of fun.

Oh, in 1976, I bought a German 88 commission rifle converted to 8x57S by german arsenals. Price as shipped, $27.50. I even mail ordered it because it was considered an antique, not subject to FFL only status. That one is pretty amazing in quality, not real useful, but a lot of fun in a Mosin Nagant sort of way. :D I remember when I was buying my SKSs and Hakim and such, Mosins were going for 40 bucks. They're still a bargain, arsenal refinished ones for under 100 bucks. Hard to beat that. I don't have one, don't feel the need.
I don't own a rifle that ain't fun, I'm just trying to pick out the cheap ones.

The SKS is a good value, I wonder how come no one mentioned a good old 12 guage pump?

That's my vote, soley for the versatility.

I got my 870 used for well under $200, absolutely nothing wrong with it mechanically. Wood furniture without but a couple minor wear spots, not even scratches, and a 28" bbl.

With that gun, you can hunt almost anything you like depending on the load you choose. Slugs can give you a single, accurate projectile. If that's not required, use the shot size and material appropriate for anything from upland kinda stuff, to squirrels and rabbits.

You can also modify it very easily, as I've done mine, with the pistol grip/short barrel etc. A very quick change, like having two completely differant weapons.

Hunting, HD, plinking with cheap light game loads, hell and you don't see many people do skeet with anything else. Maybe it's just me also, but there's something very satisfying found in letting go a magnum slug or big 000 steel shot, the loud deep boom and recoil perhaps.

What else can do all that?

10-22 with lots of mags is just good cheap fun. Marlin GG 45-70 is a blast but it does get spendy. The best BANG for the buck may just be the 12G, good return on your investment with every trigger pull when you are used to shooting a 22.
