For some unknown reason I keep track of the number of rounds fired through my guns. I look back over the years and some of them are adding up. My highest would be my Ruger 10/22 with 10500. I have a PC9 with over 8000 rounds. S&W 629 with about 5000 rounds. I would be curious to see what other people have.

Probably have over 100K rounds through my first .22, which happens to be a 10/22.

That's 25+ years.

Now that i've started shooting trap, even one day a week, I see how I could get to 10's of thousands of shells a year doing that and I'm not even close to hardcore, there are guys in my club that shoot trap multiple days per week.

There is certainly a segment that shoots far more than this.

On other forums where a lot of competition guys post, they wear guns out annually they shoot so much 50-100k rounds a year is common and not even noteworthy.

I wish that were me.

I have over 10k through my P229, and about 5k through my P99.

A couple .22 rifles I have that are over 50 years old, who knows. 100k? 200k? More?

I don't keep track of my rounds but I know for certain it's my marlin 60 .22lr because I'm cheap and so are .22lr shells:D. My dad bought it for me for christmas years ago and it was well used then and I shoot it quite a bit. It's still a tackdriver my buddy just hates me during coon season he's got the newer version of the model 60 and ->he<- or the gun can't shoot near as well as me with my 60 can. If I really want to get em goin I start callin my shots and then complain about I missed when I'm off a quarter of and inch from where I aimed.:D
I'd hate to have to pay for the ammo like those hardcore trapshooters that gets pricey real quick.

IIRC, for advertisement purposes back in the 60's remington fired a few of their nylon 66 rifles more than a million rounds and recorded just a few FTF stoppages.

I've got a pair of early 1991A1 Colts that I've done my level best to destroy. The two of'em have a combined count of about 350-360,000 rounds...pretty much evenly split. I say "about" because I stopped keepin' track somewhere around the 340k mark a while back.

Both guns are on their 3rd barrel, and both still have many of the original small parts.

I've fired:

7k through my XD45C
10k through my Interarms PPK/S
25k through my Winchester 1200 trap gun
40k through my 10/22
800 through my Saiga 308... 10 more boxes 'till it gets it's first cleaning, whether it needs it or not!

I have a Davis PPC gun I got used. For about 6 years I fired over 1000 rounds a week through it during practice and competition. Don't know how many rounds went through it before it came to me but when he let it go he was one of the top 5 in the Ohio PPC leagues.

In the last year I have loaded at least 20k of practice ammo and shot almost 18k of it but slowed down until the primer shortage eases. I think it's time to get the backstop dug up and recover the last 5 years worth of spent lead.

Glock 23 easily > 100,000 rds since the early/mid 90s.

250,000+ from a Rock Island Armory M60... All in one afternoon. Ok, just kidding. Most in one afternoon was 3000 or so.

S&W 640, appr. 20,000 rounds.

In two years.

Wow, that's a lot of rounds out of a little pistol. What were you shooting in it? Mostly 38 target, or stronger stuff? I was shooting 158 LSWC over 3.0 of Bullseye and those were nice, easy shooting and accurate. I tried 3.5 of Bullseye, and those were still easy to shoot, but I couldn't make them group as well.

Of course, as everyone says, a J frame is not a target pistol. Cool that you're getting your practice in with it, though.

Any wear, lead shaving, endshake, or other issues? Planning on sending it back to the factory for a tune up?

That 640 is my primary testing gun for a "short-barrel revolver" load development database I have been doing. I started out seeking a 'replica reload' similar in feel to the 38+P GDSB 135-gr. factory round. I did that, and moved it into a 357 case as well. Since sorting that initial replica reload, out, I've gone to develop loads for an "FBI800" in both 38 and 357 cases, and an "FBI900" round--a 158-gr LSWC-HP running at about 900 fps from a 2" barrel--in 357 cases.

Most of the rounds shot in the 640 started with high 38 Special pressures, on into 38+P and 38 CIP pressures, and on up the 357 Magnum scale. Guesstimating, I would say 85% of the rounds fired were 38+P or hotter.

At about rounds 300, I did fire 5 cases overcharged with AA#7--the cylinder showed stretching over the chambers. That load, analyzed here and in another forum, produced an estimated 70,000 psi; the gun was still shootable. I sent it in to S&W, and they fit a new cylinder. Since then, shooting it has been uneventful; the "biggest" rounds were Ramshot Silhouette recipes, which produced about 1120 fps with a 158-gr. LSWC.

The gap remains about 0.006, which is nominally 0.002 more than when new. There is some small end shake, but no unusual wear elsewhere. The trigger--which had a minor polish job when brand new--is simply the smoothest j-frame DAO trigger I have ever shot.

It's a fine gun. I don't carry it routinely--a scandium-framed one is my carry gun (either an M&P340 or a 360). If I could get S&W to make a 640 or 340 with a 3" barrel, my life would be complete.

And, yes, I am proficient with SD scenarios now, and have a well-condiioned hand as well.

My dad has a Winchester Model 12 he has been shooting trap with since 1975. It has been through 2 barrels and countless firing pins. The old man guesses it to have 500k through it since he has owned, probably not much more before that. In the last 2 years alone he guesses he has shot 75k through it. The worst/best thing that happened to his pension was moving within 3 miles of the gun club.

Just out of curiosity, at what point does a shotgun barrel wear out? How do you tell?

His told him by blowing out the side by where the rib meets the barrel on the last one not sure about the first.
