Most overated Handgun?

I would vote for Glock. I like them, but it's very utilitarian and plain, especially for the price they are going for now.

It's a good pistol but should be at least $100 less.

SIG

I won't get rid of my 229 anytime soon, but the extra cost doesn't yield extra performance in my experience. Sure is pretty though.

A brief look at any gun rag will answer this question rapidly...

But that seems to be true only in the U.S. Outside the U.S., some other gun must enjoy the reputation of most over-rated.

(Which is probably the best and strongest proof that it truly is over-rated in the U.S.)

I see all of the direct votes or allusions to the 1911A1 being the most overrated and I have to scoff.

The 1911A1 still serves at the tip of the spear in this country.

The Glock at least has the somewhat dubious distinction of being the favorite of police bean counters everywhere. They can't be the most overrated either.

That claim to fame belongs to HK. This is one company that has built itself on hype and "gee whiz" but has never proven its worth in any battles of note. And they charge you for this legend built largely upon nothing but marketing.

"the tip of the spear" describes things like Nuclear missle subs, or ICBM's.

Most overrated most assuredly the M1911, Heck there are people who actually think that this handgun is one of the primary reasons we won WWII

I would have to go with Glock. It seems like the majority of shooters hate the ergonomics.

Yeah, that's pushin it. Now the Garand, on the other hand...

1911 - An over-rated hunk of crap. Give me one reason, one valid reason why this gun is superior to the others.

Glocks - Plastic guns. Enough said.

Desert Eagles - The "cool" guns. Jesus, don't even get me started. Friggin' 10 pound 15 inch long gun.

Desert Eagles - The "cool" guns. Jesus, don't even get me started. Friggin' 10 pound 15 inch long gun.

There was a guy on AR15.com that built a rifle that weighed less than an unloaded desert eagle. That's right...an AR-15 under 4 lbs. At that point I swore I'd never own a Desert Eagle.

Most overrated is:

The 1911 platform in general -- it's fine, but hardly the "be all, end all." The design is approaching 100 years old; haven't there been some advances? :neener:

I feel bad saying it since I've never even seen one but I'd have to say that because of the price Rohrbough places their product in the overrated category. I just can't see paying $1000 for a low capacity DAO pistol that's no fun to shoot, has minimal sights, and seems to have some problems with tumbling rounds. That said I might give $400 for one if the DA trigger is as smooth as a Kahr and it is the totally reliable 9mm pocket pistol they claim it to be,

wow! HK took some hits.:uhoh: I know that they are expensive, over engeneered, but hey the're german. I've got a lot of HKs. Each one is unique, well built and most of all accurate and dpendable:neener:

A lot of nice guns have been added to the list. I agree with the HK opinions, though. Yes, they are great guns, but so are a lot of others. Other pistols can have the same performance as an HK, but without the large price tag.

Desert Eagles: I couldn't agree more. Then again, this is coming from a guy who's dream pistol is a .44 magnum 8 3/4" barrel Mateba Autorevolver...

1911 platform: It's not the best .45 ACP out there. Now, I say that, but I don't want anyone throwing some 3000 dollar custom build in my face. That's only showing that you wasted 3000 dollars on something you could have had for much, much less on another platform that would have done the exact same thing: Shoot .45 acp rounds. My 625 is more accurate than every 1911 I've pitted it against. 1911s don't impress me.

Glocks: I tend to disagree. I believe glocks to be reliable, accurate, rugged platforms without many flaws other than being butt-ugly. But hey, it's what's on the inside that counts, right?

XD: I applaud someone for finally mentioning it. They don't do much for me. They're an accurate glock, let's move on with our lives.

The most overrated design has got to be the 1911. And the most overrated maker has is easily Glock. Now having said that does anyone have a flame proof suit i can borrow?

No argument here

Glocks/1911a1s/PPKs

Many Glock owners love the Glock pistol designs but I'm not a huge fan. :scrutiny:

I don't like the way most Glock models have a gap in the rear of the mag well, that can allow dirt/sand/grit/etc to get up into the pistol. The "safe action" firing system is not as good as a hammer fired DA only design either. Several LEOs have been shot and/or killed by these weapons. I'm left handed and the Glock is really made for only right handed shooting. A Glock is not my first choice for LE/security/protection use.

The 1911A1 models are not bad but they are WAAAY over-rated by many police/firearms trainers. I know I know many top pistol trainers carry and teach with 1911 model .45acp pistols but I'm not sure a single action .45acp is the "best" weapon for police duty/SWAT/spec ops etc.

Many people claim the Walther PPK .380acp is best for concealed carry/protection. But many shooters get cuts and scrapes from the PPK slides. The .380acp is a weak load too. Many firearms experts say the smallest load you should use for duty/CC is the .38spl or 9mm. .22LR .25acp .32acp may work but for the size price etc do you want to risk your life on it?

RS

It seems like the majority of shooters hate the ergonomics. (of Glocks)
Actually it seems that a minority of very vocal shooters including a goodly number of gunwriters hate the ergonomics. The majority of shooters actually think the ergonomics are pretty good. That's why so many of them have been sold and are in use.

They're all just bullet launchers, but some are easier to shoot than others. In my experience, some are *much* easier to shoot well than others.

I have tried to like--not love--Glocks. There are other equally reliable pistols that I shoot much better. I don't have to use the beancounters' gun of choice anymore.

If I were still using a semiauto regularly it would be my relatively new SA Mil-Spec. Old design, yes, but my Swiss Army knife is a pretty old one too. They get the job done with minimum fuss.

For me it would be colt right now. They are asking way to much for their wheelguns
You may or may not know this but Colt has always been about 2-3X higher than S&W for a similar revolver.

You could buy 2 (or more) Mod 29 44 Magnums in the wooden box for the price of 1 Python in a cardboard box, back when both were the flagships of their line.

The most overrated gun isn't one used by a truckload of shooters, so the Glock and 1911 are out, IMO. Too many useful, accurate, reliable, and effective examples of them for be TRULY overrated.

No, for me, overrated is the sort of thing that should be bestowed upon a gun that is beloved by those who have never even dropped a hammer (or striker) on a live chamber, even on a range. Thus, it's the Desert Eagle. All these CounterStrike and other gamer boys actually think that it's the end-all be-all of a handgun, more accurate and more powerful than any rifle. BWHAHAHAHA.

Has to be the Desert Eagle.

Smith & Wesson Sigma Series; especially the .380 version they no longer manufacture! ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Just being silly...I really don't have a gun that I feel is overrated since they are all made by imperfect humans and buyers have to be aware that not every specimen will be perfect.

The most troublesome design I have owned multiple specimens of are 1911's (Springfield Armory, Kimber, Rock Island Armory)

Overrated-3 way tie between Glock, Desert Eagle, and Beretta 92.

Most underrated pistols IMHO: CZ (all of them, and those that are based on CZ designs such as EAA witness), Taurus PT92/99/100, Rossi revos.

I have yet to have a malfunction with my EAA, never had a malfunction in 7,000+ rounds through my PT92 (which I wish I never sold), and never had a malfunction in my Rossi 352 (1,500 rounds and counting of .38 special +P and still locks up like a bank vault.)
