Most overated Handgun?

For me it would be colt right now. They are asking way to much for their wheelguns. A close second would be H&K, just my two cents.

True for the SAA, but since Colt doesn't make any other revolvers at the present, it's the secondary market driving up the prices.

Kimber, "Custom Shop" 1911s

I'm not anti-Kimber per say, but I did not receive any extra $1,100.00 value for the words "Custom Shop" stamped on the slide. My run-of-the-mill Kimbers were more accurate, and functioned better than ANY of the Custom Shop Kimbers that I owned. I have had about 8 non-custom Kimber 1911s, and 4 custom Kimber 1911s. "Custom"? Not!

I'd have to say the 1911 only because guys have this weird cult following with the 1911 and will rationalize anything any thing wrong with the pistol like they are defending a redheaded child.

Unfortunately here is the deal on a service pistol. You are issued what you are issued and you learn to operate that platform because your life depends on it. So it doesn't really matter what it is you just have to learn to deal with it.

In my case that is a H&K Compact USP .40. I didn't like it at first but after four or five thousand rounds I figured out a couple of things about it. The accuracy is more than adequate for the average engagement range we would encounter and it goes bang every single time without a hitch.

I've never seen or heard of a 1911 that can go 5,000 rounds in a row with out a single tiny little problem.

I love 1911's and have several of them but there are more reliable simplistic platforms out there for a service weapon.

Man, when ever I talk about colt on this sight it sure gets comments. About five or six years ago I was pricing out 44magnums and my 629 smith was about $75 dollars less than the colt. I live in Michigan, and I don't know if the shop was getting a heck of a deal on them, but that was the price. I now know that they are not making them anymore, but their are gunshops that are still stocking the revolvers, and one that I go frequently just got one in, how I don't know? I do agree with k217sc on his comments.

isn't this a kind of "hate" thread? As in "no more hate threads" (sticky)?

Nobody said anything about hate

I wonder if you'ed posted the above if Glock was ahead in votes

Not really. Honestly, I can't think of a gun I think is over-rated.
The best guns all have great reputations. As the quality goes down, so does the reputation.
Same for under-rated guns. There are a number of guns that are exceptional values, but it doesn't take long for folks at THR to point them out to their gun-collecting brethren.
Neither lemons nor gems go un-noticed here. That's why so many people visit this place.

Define overrated for me, please.

Over-priced but otherwise good gun?

Over-advertized by a manufacturer (what manufacturer would do such a thing...)?

Sigs over-praised by members of Sigforums (why would they do that...)?

Glocks over-worshiped by folks on Glock talk?

Obsolete design? Dirty design?

63 responses so far, IMO, based on a dozen different criteria.

I try to avoid overrated guns. Before I buy a gun, I have a reason why I am buying it, what's intended purpose, what are my alternatives, and what are my expectations of this gun's performance. I research a particular gun on this and other informative message boards. So far, with the exception of external-extractor-outfitted Kimber, all my guns (admittedly, not too many) met my expectations.

So, overrated guns or overrated expectations?

Pistols that weigh 15 oz or less...Glock is probably the most highprofile & copied - subsequently the most disliked/overated.

Glocks. Yeah, they might be reliable, but they've been sitting on their laurels. There's a lot of better stuff out there now that's also much thinner than the chunky "blocks", the grip, for me, is terrible, and the design is just so statist-like.

Yes, guns don't HAVE to look nice, but they also don't need to look like the sort of thing that's meant to be issued to some sort of blandly-clothed party loyalists in some misbegotten Cold War era whatever-istan.

The 1911.

I don't believe it merits the adoration it inspires in its most extreme devotees.

Most overated Handgun?

Pistol Grip Only Shotguns.

Makes no difference the Mfg, or model of Pistol Grip.

A shotgun being fired by hands only , with a FULL Stock is more manageable, has less felt recoil, is SAFER to shooter and to any bystanders, and a whole lot more versatile.

PGO is a specialized tool in which specialized training is needed. A PGO shotgun is so OVERATED as being a handgun as some choose to attempt make it so.

Yes I have assisted / instructed armored car guards on the PGO shotgun.

I would also have to say Glock! They dont look that great . But mainly i just never liked the double action only trigger .

For me, it's going to be a full size HK USP, or one of those "custom combat" 1911's priced above $1000.

The USP is totally overrated. It shares ergonomics and price with a perfectly square brick of gold. I like the USP compact, however.

Any 1911 that costs more than $1000 is extremely overrated because I know for fact you can get a reliable, accurate, and well designed 1911 for under $600.

What I have noticed in this thread is a few people saying that the Glock is over rated and being stated its due to grip angle/ergonomics.

To me, thats does not make it over rated, that just makes it a gun that isnt for you.

The Glock and XD to me, are priced about right.

The guns I say are over rated are H&K. My thought is that they are about $250-350.00 more than comparable guns and are not any better than the others. That, to me, is over rated.

The Colt Python. Beautiful gun. Accurate. However the lockwork is more delicate. Overpriced for what they are.....I feel the same about the Single Action Army. If Uberti can build them for $400 why is a modern Colt Single Action pushing north of $1550.
