MSNBC Moving Ahead With Shock Jock Show

Before it even debuts this weekend, talk-radio star Michael Savage's new MSNBC show has attracted more attention than anything else the struggling news network has on the air.

Advocacy groups, led by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, have launched a letter-writing campaign to keep Savage off the air. The syndicated radio personality fought back by calling his critics "stinking rats who hide in the sewers."

His show, "The Savage Nation," will air at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday despite the furor, said Alan Winikoff, MSNBC spokesman.

The brash, tough-talking Savage, who broadcasts out of the San Francisco area, is probably the second hottest talk-radio host in the country after Sean Hannity, said Michael Harrison, editor of the trade magazine Talkers.

"He is, in many ways, the quintessential shock jock," Harrison said. "He's a very aggressive, clever, street smart everyman. He flies in the face of political correctness. He's what works on talk radio."

A group Savage formed, the Paul Revere Society, advocates closing borders, deporting illegal immigrants, mandating health tests for immigrants, eliminating entitlement programs and making tax cuts permanent.

GLAAD claimed Savage spews "hateful, defamatory rhetoric" against virtually everyone except white men. He has referred to gays and lesbians as perverts, said Joan Garry, GLAAD's executive director.

"Read what he's written and listen to some of the things he's said and you can't sit idly by," Garry said. "You have to raise concerns. You have to question why a news channel would give this guy a platform."

Winikoff would not comment on why Savage was hired. Savage, rehearsing his debut, was not immediately available to speak.

"What people are forgetting is the show hasn't been on the air yet," Winikoff said. "What Savage says he wants to do on this show is focus on serious issues. Stuff that people are complaining about won't be a focus of the show. Just give the guy a chance before jumping to conclusions."

Liberal talk-show host Phil Donahue, abruptly fired last week by MSNBC, said the network was trying to "out-fox Fox" News Channel, the top-rated cable news network that employs Hannity as a daily talk show host, by appealing to conservatives.

GLAAD organized a tenacious campaign against conservative radio host Laura Schlessinger when her syndicated talk show debuted in September 2000, urging an advertiser boycott. When the show was cancelled after six months, Schlessinger blamed the boycott.

GLAAD hasn't called for a boycott against MSNBC. Garry said she wants to meet with NBC executives before deciding on a next step.

A boycott is less likely to be successful in this case, Harrison said. MSNBC's advertisers are more used to controversy than those sought by Schlessinger, he said. And Savage hasn't been as outspoken against gays as Schlessinger, who several years ago labeled homosexuality "deviant" and "a biological error," he said.

Harrison said Savage also will fight harder, as evidenced by his comments last week on his radio show.

"You stinking rats who hide in sewers!" Savage said. "You think you can go after my income? You think you can kill my advertisers? You think I'm Dr. Laura? You think I'm going to roll over? ... You're wrong!"

He said his show "is about liberty, it's about free speech," and the campaign against him is "liberal fascism."

Savage threatened to launch his own campaign against people who fund groups like GLAAD, perhaps appealing to the U.S. Justice Department to see if his rights have been violated.

"You keep this up and I tell you, until the last breath I breathe, I'll cut your sources of funding off," he said. "You'll be serving muffins in cafes if you're lucky."

Savage's radio commentary "scared me," Garry said. "It felt very threatening."

Garry said she doesn't dispute Savage's free speech rights, but said "MSNBC has a responsibility because there are and should be boundaries to what you can and can't say on television. Savage has a history of crossing those boundaries."

Mike Savage is NOT a 'shock jock' he is an American patriot who owes no aligence to ANY political party or any organization. He has traditional values but does not bash gays who practice in private as they (and hetros) should. He verbalizes what 90% of us on this forum feel and 75% of what ALL Americans feel . He doesn't spend as much time talking about his eating habits as Rush does about sports(Mike spends 0 time on sports-thank God) and he has mentioned he owns pistols and at least an AR-15.His Paul Revere society is well worth belonging to. In short: 'He da man" .:neener:

I doubt it'll go anywhere. Radio personalities rarely make for good television personalities. It seems to be some sort of unwritten rule of electronic communication. Hannity ain't that great on television, and Dr. Laura was simply trying to rationalize the fact that she was a terrible host.

I got a kick out of a show he did a couple weeks ago when the advice came out about buying plastic and duct tape. He said, I am not getting any of that, I am going to oil up the AR15, oil up the 1911......................................... or something to that effect. He is one of those radio personalities that I look forward to listening to, but when I think about it, I can't think of any good reason why

Savage is great.

I deliver pizza 40 hours a week and luckily Savage is on for 15 of those hours. Let me tell you they go the quickest. I'll never get tired of him calling the liberals names :D and damning them for what they have done and continue to do to the detriment of this great country. Hes not perfect but very entertaining. He says what he believes and means it without mincing words or tiptoeing around being politically correct. I find that very rare and I respect him for it.

Stockpile.

His show, "The Savage Nation," will air at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday

Not exactly a time slot that guarantees success, eh?

I find this absolutely hilarious. After the “Dona’hoe†debacle it looks like MSNBC is trying to make an appeasement to the conservative gods. I don’t think they are starting to “get itâ€

I can only hope that it blows up in their face. If any one has the ability to pop their bubble it’s Savage.

No, in our world he is not a "shock jock", but in their world he's from another planet.:D

I've been eagerly awaiting his TV show since he announced plans on his radio program. He's one of the few conservatives who attacks liberal ideas & personalities w/ the same zeal as they attack us (Beck & Hannity being the other two.)

Just goes to show that "Saturday Night's Alright For Fightin'..."...

I could get his radio show when I lived in the PRK. I'll never forget the impression he did of Joe Lieberman during the 2000 Presidential campaign. It was hilarious. He's pretty much of a Libertarian as far as I can tell. Pro-gun all the way. Hates Fienstien, Boxer and Davis. What more could you ask? And, we even get to hear from our new resident Troll in this thread too.

Like liberals ever buy anything with their own money.

Unless they mean that the limousine libs are going to start buying "Zims Crack Creme".

OTOH "Zims" might make a bundle in welfare money if they made their product smokable.:p

What I don't understand is why people can say they have the right to say whatever they want whenever they want too, but those with different ideas shouldn't be given the same rights.

I learned a long time ago from a very conservative friend that if you want to bash the opposition they you had better have good info on them. That is why she always read "liberal" papers, and watched and listened to "liberal" shows. That is why I started doing the same about overly conservative ideas, and in the end became more conservative.

Sometimes the most "liberal" people are the most restrictive people, and they wonder why they loose seats in congress.

To paraphrase ...

"When the ratings get tough, the tough go conservative"

These guys have tried everything except "naked liberal chick mud wrestling" to boost their ratings. (Eleanor Clift and Anna Quindlen, oooooh, scary thought, I'm blind!)

When it's all said and done, they have to go out and find a guy that is the Anti-Phil to try and save their sorry rear ends! It's pretty funny, in an ironic sort of way, if the only way they can get their ratings out of the cellar is to put a guy like Savage on.

The folks over at the oh so intolerant, DU are going freaking nuts about this. The three remaining people that will admit they are liberal Democrats are trying to organize boycotts and letter writing campaigns etc.

Funny how if we even write to the network aboiut how Martin Sheen is anti US, we are exercising censorship and it's McCarthyism of the worst kind. If they write about Rush, Savage or Dr. Laura they are just exercising free speech. Interesting conundrum, huh?

It will be fun to watch though.

It will be fun to watch though.
Oh yes.

Rush is right when he said that the "liberals" get fun when their behind.:D

To make the leap from Dona'hoe to Savage,.....I mean like WOW!:what:

As far as gays and lesbians..

People think I'm very anti gay, or anti lesbian... well... I am... when they display that stuff in public.

Guess what? I hold the same views for the hetero's too! Keep that stuff behind bedroom doors please! Don't ask, don't tell, DON'T SHOW!

I'm not talking about a peck and a kiss, I'm talking about the full grabbing and touching etc.. Get that off the streets! I don't want to see that on TV, let alone on the street!
