The manual that came with my Beretta 92FS mentions emergency loading of single rounds into the chamber if the magazine is lost, but it does not mention whether or not this practice is recommended for normal loading. I don't consider it a pain in the ass in the least to top off my carry mag in the manner described.

5) perform a battle-readiness check

After six years in the infantry, I'd love to know what this step entails, exactly.

I took it to mean that he was referring to what is commonly referred to as a Press Check...more correctly called a Chamber Check.

Retracting the slide just a bit to visually/tactility verify that there is a round chambered

I use the term “battle-readiness check” to establish my mindset. I’m performing it for a reason – to positively ensure that a cartridge is indeed chambered and the pistol is ready to fight.

“Battle-readiness check” is an active description of the task, whereas “press check” and “chamber check” are passive descriptions.

Likewise I never verify that a firearm is “unloaded”. The reason is because the mind will sometimes “see” what it expects to see – the mind is expecting an empty chamber and it may “see” an empty chamber when, in fact, there’s a cartridge. Instead I ask myself, “Is it loaded – yes or no?”

Okay, thank you. I was just curious as it sounded sort of like you were performing a pre-combat inspection on yourself. :)

How about with a Grendel P10..? Seriously, when I got mine back around 1988, I remember reading about a technique one could use to top off its internal (non-removable) ten-round magazine. It involved loading up the magazine, then partially releasing the slide just enough so that it would slip forward enough to pass the rim of the top-most round, but leave the breech open enough to then drop an eleventh round into the chamber. I think I successfully did this once of several times trying. Certainly wasn't worth the hassle, and I do like having fully-functional fingertips..!
For some reason, I never thought of the "Barney mag".. might have to use that one once in a while. Good idea.
