Definately a Kimber custom II for around $750

Kimber, Colt, Springfield, Glock in order

Kimber Ultra CDP (if you like 3" 1911s) or Pro CDP (if you like Commander size). Both are alloy framed, black frame/stainless slide, rosewood grips.

Kimber Eclipse if you prefer all steel, in 3, 4, 5" lengths.

All are gorgeous, and I wish I could afford one of each.

The S&W 1911 PD models would be nice for carry and it seems people have had fairly good luck with them. I've got to admit, when looking into 1911s the commander length PD felt great in my hand.

Taurus PT1911, over 1000 rds fired thru 2 PT1911s with no failures. Forged slide and frame, good trigger out of the box, front strap-MSH-under trigger guard checkered, Heinie Straight Eight sights, more accurate than most shooters, around $500. It's a great pistol for the money and think of all the money you'll have left for ammo!!!!!!!!

Colt '70 Series Gov't Model
S&W PD Commander
XD45ACP

I have all and they have all operated without any malfunctions.

XD is the best price wise and holds 13 rds

You need to test fire if possible and don't let anyone talk you into something just for the Cool factor.

If you like plastic and the grips work for you (as me) glock 30 or 21. This depends on how much you carry it. If you want steel and the grip angle works for you (it doesn't point for me) any 600.00$ on up 1911 or sig P220. The 1911 just don't point well for me but I like the looks

I'd definetly go with a 1911-style gun over a DA/SA or a Glock-style. Go with a basic Kimber or SA (my choice is the Kimber), or possibly the Taurus. I say possibly, because they haven't been out long enough to really determine reliability. S&W is another possibility, but IMO they are over-priced.

Also - again IMO & no flame intended - real .45s are metal!! :D

Glock 21 or Glock 30. I have both which have likely seen close to 10k rounds put together. Neither of them have ever failed but once in the 30 with a lousy Blazer Brass cartridge that had the bullet seated WAY too deep.

Definately a Kimber custom II for around $750

I had one it was a good range toy but I wouldnt trust my life to it. It did fail to feed on quite a few occasions.

:scrutiny:
My recommendation would be the Smith and Wesson M&P45 that is due out on shelves any day now...

Why would you recommend a gun that isnt even on the market yet for carry?

The Glock 30 is the softest shooting 45 I have ever owned, which means faster recoil recovery and more rounds on target faster. I love the 1911,but when I lay down my S&W 1911 at the range and start shooting the 30,I can notice a marked difference and I'm not sensitive to recoil.
The G30 is also amazingly accurate for it's size.Easy handling.Like 'em both but the G30 carries more comfortably over long periods due to it's weight. It's just a widetrack.

Dan Wesson Pointman 7 or CBOB for a 1911. Sig 220 is also a nice choice as is a HK USP. Maybe even a Ruger! Everything else is :barf:

First off you eliminate all 1911 platform guns! Simply put they are not that reliable out of the box, and no I am not going to use 500 rds to break in a gun.:banghead:

So then where does that leave you?

1 HK USP Fullsize or Compact
2 Sig 220
3 S&W 4506
4 Glock 21
5 Springfield Armory XD
6 Ruger

I can tell you my answer! HK USP and never look back!

Look at the CZ97. It works out-of-the-box, accurate, steel, about half your budget ($550.00 new, 450.00 used).

Do a lot of research before you buy. Many of the high price 1911 models (clones, knockoffs, etc.) models are just that, high priced without benefit for the majority of shooters.

The CZ line of pistols offers the biggest bang for the buck in today's market.

If given a $1000.00 1911 .45, I'd sell it, take the money, buy a CZ97, and take the difference in ammo or buy a used CZ97.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Steve

All of mine have been.

and no I am not going to use 500 rds to break in a gun.

No flame intended - but don't listen to the above. I like the 1911 & Kimber in particular, but whatever you choose, especially in a semi-auto, run 5 or 10 boxes of ammo through it before it goes from a range queen to a CCW piece & you trust your life on it.

When I made my suggestions I totally slipped on the CZ 97! +1 to the cz97! You can save all the cash and still go show up the $1000 1911s at the range.

Isn't it interesting that you have to spend over $1000 to beat a $400 CZ for accuracy?
