I own a Sig P220 that I bought as a CPO. It works great. I also have several semi-autos in .40 S&W and 9mm. Thinking of getting a second semi-auto in .45ACP. Considering a 1911 but open to others. I'm sure I'll get lots of recommendations for a 1911 since I don't own one. I am concerned about reliability in the production 1911's under $1000. Not sure I want to shell out over $1000 for one either. For that matter, at around $1000, I could get a couple of .45ACP semi-auto polymer handguns (Glock, XD, M&P).

My P220 actually works pretty well as a carry gun in the winter with coats and vests as cover garments.

Suggestions?

...

Yep, either a 3", or favored by more, a 4", 1911.. Most under 1k..

Colt, Springfield, are 2 that I can speak highly of, but there are some others, that I can't speak for, out there as well, that are great 1911's to choose from as well.

Great shooters, accurate, and you'll love the SAO, along with, the safety/s to be able to carry locked and cocked..

Just make sure your *gun is cleaned, before firing it out of the box, and make sure that the *rails and guides are good and *WET, along with making sure the *interior walls of the mags are clean (*dry-no oil) along with the follower (is smooth).

*Keep those items in check, and use **good ammo, and you'll be in Heaven..

**read owners manual as to what ammo one can, and CANNOT, use.

If you do go for some "Combat Tupperware" I recomend the XD, I LOVE my Tactical XD in .45 acp. but there is something very desierable about the 1911s.

Get a Kimber

Kimbers are excellent guns for the price... and can be had for less than 1k. If you have access to a range that offers rental guns, go shoot a Kimber... a TLE if they have one, and compare that to a 1911 Springfield, Taurus, Colt, etc.

If you're looking for a non-1911, HK makes a great gun too. SIGs are also quite nice.

I've read several good reports on RIA's and a few on Para-ordinance. I've never fired one.

I've put about 150 rounds through an SA Mil-spec and liked the pistol.

I have a Taurus PT1911B. Zero complaints, Zero problems. I've been very pleased with it.

If you don't have a 1911 get one than the xd45c 4"bl 10 round mag for carry with back up 13 rd mag, good gun.

txgolfer45, I will be getting a Dan Wesson Commander Classic Bobtail in May.

I shot one at the range recently and let the dude shoot one of mine and I was hooked. It's a little bit thicker than most single stack 1911s, but the fit and finish are excellent and it's great in the accuracy department. Made me look like some kind of professional. This thing is going to be one of my carry guns.
It comes with fixed tritium sights, bobtail, stainless steel, traditional bushing, no front cocking serrations, beavertail safety, lowerd/flared ejection port, no ambidextrous safety, internal extractor, and traditional recoil spring assembly.

Seems like the perfect gun for me. I have been hunting for a 1911 for some time now and I couldn't quite find one with the right combo of features out of box. the Springfield Loaded has an ambi safety (which I don't like) and a bushingless barrel on the Champion (doesn't seem right on a 1911). The Springfield Milspecs and GIs, OTOH, do not have an ambi safety, but have crappy sights and no beavertail. The Kimbers, and many others have external extractors, which I didn't want. None of ParaOrd's, except for the Night Hawg (doublestack abomination), come with tritium sights, which is a must for me. Neither do Colt's. This is the only 1911 short of an Ed Brown Kobra Carry that fit the bill for me.

Check it out, my friend, you might find it to your liking. Especially if you are as particular as I am.

How many guns do you need?

Like you, I had several semi auto guns in various calibers. XDs, Glocks, HKs, etc. They all worked great and are good guns. All will get the job done. However, as an enthusiast, I always wanted more: better triggers, tighter groups, etc.

I sold several of the common guns and shelled out $1700 for a Les Baer in .45ACP. Can I get three other decent guns (Glocks, XDs, etc.) for $1700. Sure. Can any of the “decent guns” touch the Baer in terms of performance and accuracy: no way. 100 average guns do not sum up to one Les Baer and I only carry one gun.

So in my opinion, save a little more or sell off some of your OK guns and get one good gun: Les Baer, Wilson, Ed Brown, or whoever (do your homework).

I am concerned about reliability in the production 1911's under $1000

No actually, you've got it backwards. The looser a 1911 is, the more reliable. Seems to be the general concensus.

Look at RIA or the Taurus.

My last .45 was an XD Compact for carry. I adore it. I shoot it better than just about any other handgun I own, probably due to the fact that it fits my hand extraordinarily well. With a pancake holster under a button up shirt it disappears completely. My next .45 will be a 1911, probably a Springfield Loaded. If your coming acquisition is more for recreation and less for utility, go with a nice 1911. At this stage of my shooting life, it's entirely possible that I couldn't tell the difference between a $1000 1911 and one that runs twice that. Most any good 1911 will be capable of more than I am, so I would go with something less expensive. I might be inclined to believe that a top dollar 1911 was nicer than another based on its sticker price, but too much more than that might be lost on me. But hey, that's just one guy's opinion. So, I guess what this all comes down to is hustle down to a gun store and handle some guns!

I echo a previous poster - I only carry one (okay two) guns at a time and I want them to be utterly reliable and familiar while being easy to conceal and get to. If a serious and deadly situation comes along, I don't want to be wishing that I'd spent the extra $$$$ to purchase a truly reliable weapon. I have a plethora of weapons that I use and enjoy, but they aren't my carry choices. IMO, get the absolutely best weapon in the most effective caliber (I know, I know), that's points naturally in your hand, that you can afford. Save the price bickering for the ones that get taken to the range or sit in a case awaiting use. ;)

i have a ruger p345, and it is the most accurate handgun that i own.

if i had about 1k to spend i would probally buy 2 guns. xd .45 and the ruger.

but the 1911 if i didn't have one already would be on the top of my list, and i would go the sa route, most likely the loaded series.

I have an XD tactical that I really like. It has high cap mags, a grip that I can get my fingers around and a good, reliable shooter. I can't ask for more. I have a new M&P .40 that I shoot yesterday that was really nice. Came really close to buying the .45 in that one. I don't think that you can go wrong with either of these two brands.

Everybody's got to have a 1911. You just do.

The "bottom rung" Kimbers are excellent guns. I have a Gold Match, but my friend has the TLE II and it's just awesome. The Custom II is basically the same gun, which means it's a quality piece that handles well, has a great trigger, and is an utter joy to shoot.

Otherwise, I'm also an XD booster. I have the .40 service, but I'm sure the .45 is just as delightful. It's comfortable, but it's not as comfy as the 1911. I don't think anything is.

My next is going to be another Wilson.Going to go for the CQB elite. After I got my first Wilson,I was hooked.
