I was in the right place at the right time when I got my Gold Cup for $650
. My choices would be Colt, Dan Wesson, Springfield, Kimber in that order. If you wan a no frills mil(ish)-spec gun then options abound. Hell, even the Chi-Coms seem to make a half decent version.
The last Colt WWI Repro I saw was in the dealers case for an even grand. It pays to look around.
The other option is to try to pick up a nice M22 revolver....
At the end of the day you will have x number of people tell you to buy brand a Kimber, y number recommend a Springer, z number to try a CZ/Dan Wesson, and a majority of those might recommend a Colt. Decide what features you want and shop around and see what your local dears have with those features. What options do you want anyway?
