A range gun under a $1000 bucks?

I have had an HK USP 45 forever, bought it new and it is a 2xxx serial number series. NEVER had a failure, accurate, and very comfortable to shoot. Only complaint I would have is there is nowhere near the parts and accessories there are for the 1911. You can pick up a used one for around $500 avg.

I also picked up a traded 4506 a few months ago for $300k, third gen S&W's are popping up all over for cheap. I love the gun, the heavy frame eats recoil making it comfy to shoot for prolonged periods. It is also insanely accurate.

My carry gun is a Champion.

My vote would be for either the HK or S&W if you just want a range gun. I have had great luck with mine.

A thousand is a pretty good budget.

For "out of the box reliability", a Kimber Custom II or Springfield Armory 1911 Loaded will work save the rest for a Dillon SBD reloader (or a Lee Classic Turret to fit within budget).

Personally, I'd choose a SA 1911 Milspec. Spend to have gunsmith work trigger to 3.5-4.0lbs and replace bushing with a Clark NM. Spend the rest of a reloader!

I can only speak of my experiences. I own both the XD and Springfield Loaded. Both 100% reliable out of the box. The XD has well over 2000rds and the Loaded is over 500 now. The XD was 499.00 and the Loaded was 725.00. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I'm with Redhat for both his posts, apart from XD with which I have no experience. My next purchase will be a Smith (2nd one), last was a P13.

Having said that, highly recommend S&W 457 or 4516. IMO they are real sleepers. Reliable and accurate OOB. A real bargain even if used.

If you really, really want a reliable .45 auto, may I suggest you look at the Ruger P90? She is an ugly thing: You may not want your friends to see you with it, but mine has been the most relible auto I own. I didn't want it to be that way. I have or have had nearly every other type of .45 auto (and other calibers). I dislike the look of the Ruger P90 and the ergonomics are akin to a baked potato. But it goes bang when I pull the trigger and they are relatively inexpensive.

I might also suggest you consider one of S&Ws .45 ACP revolvers. They have several to choose from and a revolver will shoot anything you put in it. If it fails to fire, pull the trigger again. Don't tell any anybody, but my bedside gun is a .357 revolver. When it has to go bang, it has to be a revolver.

Good luck.

Good luck

If you want a 1911 type, buy a Rock Island...For a little over $100,you can buy 3 of them. If you want a DA pistol, get a S&W 4506 or 4566 or similar 3rd gen pistol while they are still to be found.
