Need a car gun

I'd just look for a way to keep my normal carry gun secured as best as possible in the car when I couldn't carry it. I don't like the idea of leaving a gun in a car unless you positively can't avoid it. Unless it's securely stored in a bolted in mini-safe or something all it takes is a crow-bar for someone to steal it. Then you're out a $400 gun and more importantly, a criminal can take that gun and use it to shoot up a playground or convenience store. That's avoidable if I just keep the gun on my hip instead of leaving it in the car.

I guess it is different depending on where you live, but I only know of 1person who has had a gun stolen from their vehicle, but I know of several that have been stolen from homes. Burgularies are extremely rare around here though. I don't currently have a firearm in my car, but I don't see a problem with leaving one in a car. Even if a gun is stolen from a car it is the thieves fault, not the owner, so I definatley don't think it is irresponsible.

Criminals get guns by breaking laws.

I am in no way responsible for a gun that was locked in my car and was stolen. What if they break into your house, or even your safe? You gonna be responsible for what your guns do if stolen from your safe?

Just out of curiosity, do you have a link to stolen guns being used to shoot up a playground or C Store? Preferably one stolen from a car.

The FEG, PJK -9HP . It is a fine HI- POWER clone in 9mm.It takes HP mags &shoots fine after a few rounds. And it can be had for less than $300. Put it in a car safe, the trunk in lock box.I know it's not a H.P. but it cost alot less. FEG is an old CO. and makes a lot of weapons for civil. &mil. sales.

Nope, I have no links to anything. But my gut tells me that a gun locked in a car is an easy target and I could prevent it from being taken by keeping it heated to 98.6 degrees on my right hip.
Would such a theft be the criminal's fault?
Yep.
Still, I'm more comfortable not leaving one in a car. Just the fact that people suggest buying a cheap one in case it is stolen suggests I'm not the only one who's thought of this. And why anyone would let themselves open to this when they could just pack the handgun on their person all the time - and protect their investment in a defensive weapon - is beyond me.
Do what your conscience tell you to do, and I'll do what mine tells me to do.

I prefer the non concealable one in my trunk. You know, just in case. And for the times I can't legally carry a gun.

I'm not sure if it's completely because they expect it to get stolen. I would want a cheaper gun because I would hate to spend a thousand on a gun and leave it in a car where it would be exposed to varying temperatures, scratches, dust etc. and wouldn't always get the same maintenance as the gun in my home or on my hip. I would feel much better about scratching a Makarov or a Glock than I would scratching a $2,000 1911.

CAR GUN
You shoot a car with any gun or weapon and it will do a fair job.
But you are going to need a big pot to boil what ever car you bag.

Back to the real topic!

I know you said you like a semi-auto but for a gun that may sit for a year without being used I truly feel a revolver is a better choice. Since I don't know what the weather is like where you live I will recommend a S&W 4" M64 police trade in. It's stainless, holds 6 rounds of ammo and can be quickly reloaded with a speedloader. Revolvers are very reliable under the conditions you are setting.

Though we are not allowed the luxury of CCW up here in Canada, if I could have a truck gun for under $400, it would be a good, used Ruger P90 (.45acp) or P91 (.40S&W) in the DeCocker models, stainless slide. Reliable and accurate.

Old Safe Deposit Box under the seat ...

I bolted an Old (thick metal) Safe Deposit Box under the driver's seat and it takes (2) keys to open it ... Reasonably secure from burglars and the (2) key setup keeps "Johnny Law" happy (in most States).

Times " they are a changin' " and having a firearm close at hand makes
good sense.

Welcome to America! If you wish to keep a gun in your vehicle you have that right in most places. As said previously if I want to keep a firearm in my vehicle I'm not going to let the fact that it "might get stolen" keep me from doing so. I gotta say for a dedicated car gun I think a Hi Point in your favorite caliber would be hard to beat. Haven't priced them in a while but I think you would be looking at under $150 for whichever caliber you choose. Don't be afraid of the Hi Points if you aren't familiar with them, they are good, tough, reliable guns, their down side is that they are ugly and heavy, thus making it an ideal car gun.

PET PEEVE ALERT

Leaving a gun in a car, or any other mode of transportation is not a good idea. Leaving a loaded pistol in your car will enable any junior-high school drop-out, with the right combination of drugs and balls to break into your car looking for spare change or CD's and viola', become an armed car prowler. The gun becomes fodder for the black market, where it eventually will wind up in the hands of gang-bangers, drug dealers or used to rob innocent folks.

It is irresponsible to leave a firearm unattended. When not in your immediate possession, firearms should be locked in a gun safe. Not a glove compartment or "hidden" under the driver's seat. Your "convenience" then becomes society's problem.

+1 on the Cougar as well. One of the best values available today. Excellent design, super reliable & accurate. Thoroughbred Beretta through & through.
Honestly, after using a Stoeger SxS shotgun for years in SASS, my opinion wasn't very good of the company, but just yesterday I saw a "Torture Test" segment on Gun's and Ammo TV where they rapid fired 150+ rounds through a Cougar to test the accuracy of the weapon while hot, and it performed flawlessly!

Good advice, and I would add one thing. If you live in a state where a permit or license is required to carry a firearm, and you have a family member/friend who may drive your car without one, you put them at risk of a '35 Firearms violation..........not a good scenario!

So, what some of you guys are saying is that Harry Highschool might have a crowbar, or Sammy Sneakthief might override your garage door opener, or [insert other scenario against which we carry insurance here], and when he does:

1) he will have access to a gun that's not locked in a safe
2) he will know there's one to find
3) he will actually find it
4) he will use it to commit further crimes.

And all of that means that unless every gun is on a legally authorized hip or in a safe, its owner is being irresponsible.

What keeps the same notorious do-badder from simply clubbing you from behind to get your wallet and your watch and also stealing the gun he finds on your hip, then using it to commit further crimes?

BS. I am not going to let the possible illegal actions of others make my choices for me. What if you don't have a safe, you should not own a gun? What if you have a cheap safe, should not own a gun? What if you live in a trailer in a bad part of town, should not be allowed to own a gun?

Now, obviously, you should use some common sense, and try to have the gun secured better than just tossed in the back seat. No offense, but by your logic, anyone who does not have a very high end safe should turn in their guns, because their home might be broken into. And forget that concealed carry, someone might hit you over the head and take your gun.

It is one thing to be cautious and use some sense, it is another, in my opinion, to live your life based on what a criminal might do.

People don't steal houses. People steal cars, plus anything in the cars.

A gun in the glove box, console or under the seat will be discovered.

True, you may not be held liable for the theft of your unattended gun which was subsequently used to kill someone.

But that would bother me.

At the very least, use a car safe or lock box.

I'll admit to doing something stupid.
For years I carried a old beat up Glock 17 with a hi-cap
mag. in a custom made stainless steel insert in the center
console of my Jeep. Buried down under the gloves, cds
and misc. junk that grow in car consoles.
Anyway I live in Michigan and went to Canada for a weekend
event....you got it....forgot the glock was in the Jeep.
Sometime Saturday night I remembered it was there, oh crap!.
Now what?
Spent some time detail stripping the Glock, tossed the ammo,
and hid the various parts all over the place. The lower and slide
got put in plastic bags and dropped in the race cars fuel cell.
No border issues and have not been dumb enough to EVER
repeat that mistake.

I thought I'd toss my $.02 in. 2 years ago I had a Glock 26 stolen out of my car. The feeling was like somebody punched me in the stomach...not because of the money, heck I blow more than that on junk food every year, but the knowing that I unknowingly put a highly concealable handgun into the hands of a criminal. Last month, by some miracle from God the police recovered and returned my weapon. The relief that it was not used in a violent crime cannot be described. So should you not place a gun in your car in case it "might" be stolen? That's up to you, but I can say without a doubt that I personally felt partially responsible when my gun was stolen and I think most reasonable people would agree that there is a difference in the type of thief between one who breaks into a home and one who breaks into a car. Car break ins happen much, much, much more frequently.

People don't steal houses. People steal cars, plus anything in the cars.

No, but people do steal guns from houses. So i suppose you could also call anybody who fails to install a vault in their home irresponsible.

The fact is many states have multiple places in which guns can not be carried so you must choose between going unarmed or leaving a gun in the car at times. My employeer does not allow firearms inside the building. Also, many states do no allow open carry so people are forced to comprimise with a smaller weapon for carry. Therefor a larger and more effective gun is left in the car. So if somebody steals my gun from my car my conscious is clean as i did not sign our current laws.

Edit: Oh yeah, LE trade in glocks can be had for under $300.
