OK,
So my Wife called the FL Department of... and they said they printed the permit yesterday, and that she should get it very soon.

SOOO...

She needs a gun. I was thinking about S&W 642 / 442 but I'm afraid it kicks a but too much for her. Other options include Glock 26 but she doesn't like the grip :uhoh:

So, please recommend a subcompact semi-auto and/or revolver that YOUR wifes are comfortable with carrying and shooting.

Thanks a bunch! This is very important to us!

eric;

Take her to a good gun store/range, preferably a gunstore with a range. Let her handle as many handguns as possible & find the 3 or 4 that feel best to her. Then have her shoot what felt good in her hand, there may be changes. Repeat as necessary.

If she wants an auto but doesn't like the grip of the glock, the springfield counterpart would be the XD9 subcompact with a more 1911 angle grip. If that's too big there are some offerings from Kel-Tec

Don't automatically assume women will like a snub nose revolver. My wife hates all of them. She'd much prefer to shoot her .380 Bersa (even though it feels to me like it recoils more) or any of my 9 mm semi autos. Let her shoot a bunch of stuff first.

I've got a Benelli Nova I might consider trading ya for her. Whats she look like?

No, friggin, way!!! :)

There's no hope for it. She just has to go shopping. :D

Seriously. She has to pick out the one that fits her hand, and the only way I know to do that is go shopping, handle as many as interest her, and hopefully be able to rent or borrow a few that she likes and try them out.

I can tell you what *I* carry, but that doesn't mean anything unless she's my twin sister, and maybe not even then. Take her shopping with a good size budget to spend, and she'll find "the one".

(My first was an XD-40. I now carry a Kimber Ultra Carry II or a m37 (.38 spl). The one thing I *would* suggest is that she not pick a J-frame for her first gun. They're wonderfully concealable, but not so easy to be really good with. OTOH, she may be the unusual person who shoots them really well. Gotta try to find out.

My wife chose a 640 as her carry gun, but I would have much preferred her to use a semi auto as she refuses to consider extra ammo, even for work. She likes the 640 because it always goes bang, there is no safety to worry about, yet it has a nice heavy trigger pull that she feels more comfortable with, she has trouble racking the slides on most guns and refuses to practice ways around this, and she thinks its pretty :scrutiny:

She has taken a liking to my P2000sk, but she still much prefers the revolver. There is definitely a major learning curve on a snubbie .38 or .357 as far as recoil anticipation. We got her this, because I knew no matter how much I would rather her carry a semi auto with more capacity, she wouldnt want to carry the semi auto, but she will carry the revolver though.

If your wife isnt against semi auto's I would show her the P2000sk it is very versatile and many people really enjoy it.

Let her hold them all, fire them if possible.

As for snubs, don't forget that just because it's chambered for .357, it doesn't mean she can't carry .38s.

(She's cute, btw!)

I recommend against snubs because of the small grip, short sight radius, and heavy-feeling trigger. All three factors put together make it much harder to shoot those guns accurately. Remember... after psychological concerns fail, it's fast center hits that end an altercation.

I recommend against a snub in .357 because most people don't like shooting them, especially with hotter loads. They do make for sore hands/wrists which discourage practice.

That said, my sister, who isn't your wife, shoots a Taurus M85 in .38spl and makes fist-size groups at 7yds with any ammo she's shot in it. She also hits gallon jugs out to 15-20yds with that same gun. But she can shoot anything she wants to.

I would recommend a S&W Model 10 which is a K-frame .38spl sixgun with a 4" bull barrel. They're easy to shoot and dependable. Despite so many tacticool threads hyping up semi-autos, those M10's are quite popular. However, even that recommendation isn't foolproof.

You don't pick her shoes and you shouldn't pick her gun. Let her try some out and see what works for her. A thin singlestack semi automatic like a 1911 or sig 239 seems to usually go over well. Most guys want to push j-frames off for some reason I don't fully understand.

Who knows until she tries one. I thought my girlfriend would be the .380 kind of girl. Turns out she wants a .357 mag in a SA revolver with a 6" barrel, and yet she absolutely hates my j-frame snubby in .38 and refuses to shoot it with any +p round.

My wife loves my, excuse me, Her Colt 1911 Combat Elite! You never know with them women, they like what they like.

Ask her what she is looking for and what she is comfortable with feel-wise and caliber-wise. My girlfriend (now-ex, very long story) had no problem with a 1911 in .45 ACP and loved shooting it. If your wife is fine racking the slide of an automatic, more power to her. Just like everyone is suggesting, take her around and find what she likes.

My first gun was a .22 S&W revolver. My first carry gun was a S&W .38 5-shot revolver. Wanted a semi-auto after my shoot out with an armed felon and chose a Kahr P9. Graduated to an XD 40 then to a Kimber Ultra Carry .45.
My husband can't keep me out of the gun shops. There is always "one" that must follow me home.:D

Make sure she can work the slide on an auto - my wife had a very hard time with it and turned against the gun because of it.

You're going to need to take her to the range and see what she can handle. I've seen way too many people buy what they THINK they'll like or what somebody tells them they SHOULD get and only end up disappointed and out quite a bit of $$.

Some women can rack the slide on a semi-auto...some can't. That'll narrow your choices quickly.

How is she planning on carrying? That will also make a big difference.

Is she going to practice regularly? Will she be able to tap-rack-bang in a moments notice w/o thinking about it? If not, look at the revolvers.

My wife has a S&W model 60 w/CTC lasergrips. She won't go to the range regularly and can't manipulate a large semi-auto (does ok shooting one though)...

Oh, and tell her congrats on getting her permit!!

Where are you at in Florida? I am in South Florida on the east side and I have a PT140MilPro she is more than welcome to try out. My wife loves the grip and ergos of it. I personally want to sell it to get the .45

Ft. Lauderdale. You?
What caliber is it?
Email me with pics and price :)

You just need to let her handle and shoot as many guns as possible.

My girlfriend has small hands, so I figured my Sig 225 (a single stack auto) would fit her pretty well.

Well she shot horribly with it.

And only slightly better with a CZ 75B.

But someone handed her a Glock 34 and she mowed down a rack of plates like it was nothing.

She wound up with a Glock 17 which she shoots very well.
