Need help finding an affordable SA M1A.

I am looking for a std SA M1A with wood stocks, used or semi-new or new. My price range is under $1200. But my local shops only carry brand new SA M1A for $1500 + tax/etc. My last chance is the gun-show next week.

Just curious if there is any good online sites that people have ordered M1A from in the past and would still recommend them...?

I dont know much about it yet...

but there are posts on here about building up M14 type rifles with parts kits. Of course this would mean its not SA, but they supposedly get good reviews. Even with a gunsmith figured in these are supposed to be less expensive than the standard M1A.

I'm afraid not, with the low stock and high prices on USGI M14 parts. Buying used is probably the best option, and if you can find something made in the 80s or early 90s, you will probably be assured the rifle is built with GI parts.

It's worth your while to find an FFL. You shouldn't have any trouble buying one for $1200 used including the FFL fees and shipping.

It's tough to put one together yourself for less than $2000 these days.

www.budsgunshop.com has some competitive prices on M1As. i picked up a new "loaded" standard with the SS barrel for mid 1300s. it had a synthetic stock, but i'm sure the models with walnut stocks should be at a good price as well.

Are you sure they are selling M14's/M1a's?? I thought they still couldn't sell them because they are technically "machine guns" (M14's)

The CMP does not sell M14 rifles, nor do they sell M1A rifles. They did sell DCM competition AR15 rifles at one point, but they are long since sold out.

A used M1A for $1200 can be had, but you'll have to do some digging. If you do find a new one for $1200 you need to buy it immediately.

If you don't mind having a Chinese M14-clone, they can be had for around $800. Most are fairly reliable, but some do require some gunsmithing to correct problems.

hey, its an expensive toy. Even used examples are spendy. Save up for another month, and then go looking. If you opt for a NORINCO clone, dump the bolt, and have a USGI bolt installed. That costs more, of course.
