I've managed to narrow down my choices for a new CCW to either the Glock 23 or the 4" Springfield XD in 40 S&W. I know that either one will do the job. If anyone has experience with both of these, which do you think is better?

It's all preference but i've owned both of those exact guns and i think the XD is a much better handgun for several reasons...but the main one is the comfort/ergonomics and how easy it is to shoot compared to the glock. It's just a better shooting gun and i could shoot it much more comfortably and accurately. As far as reliability, i would say they are exactly the same since i have never had a single malfunction at all with any of my glocks or XDs. Both are great guns, i just think the XD is better.

Well, I have shot the g23, but I own the XD 40 4in.

I love my XD. I have about 2000 rounds through it and have not had a single issue with it. I think it is more comfortable than the glock and has a better trigger pull. However, it does seem to have a longer trigger reset than the glock.

I would just tell you to go with whatever one you like better. You can't really go wrong with either one.

Here comes the list again! no i am not a sa sales man!:)

These are my personal opinions and by no means are true for everyone, but these are the reasons that I prefer the xd to the glock!

Grip angle- more comfortable, feels better in my hands.
Grip girth- I have small hands so something I can wrap my hands around is important.
Finger groves- don’t like them don’t think I need them.
Guide rod- metal instead of plastic
Metal sights-unlike glock
Factory sights- 3 dot sights are better for me than the glock u type sights
XD gear- xd comes with holster, double mag carrier, and loading tool, and three mags glock does not.
Metal trigger- xd has metal trigger, glock has plastic.
Trigger pull- trigger all around better on the xd.
Xd has a Fully supported chamber, glock dosen’t
xd mags are ss, and easy to disassemble, and clean.

glocks are fine weapons though.

As everyone said, they are both very close and you can't go wrong with either. My choice is GLOCK, so I'll split some hairs...

Advantage GLOCK
- polygonal rifling, moreso in compact barrels (makes up for velocity loss)
- captured recoil spring
- lack of grip safety
- lower bore axis
- aesthetics
- finish (doesnt matter what year)
- lack of protruding firing pin/lci's
- track record (does not speak negatively to xd, just positively for GLOCK)

Advantage XD
- sights
- price
- possibly chamber support... GLOCK has recently redesigned their .40sw chambers. While some say it is a non issue both b/f and after, the fact that GLOCK felt the need to make a design change raises an eyebrow- either there was a problem before (however significant), or if there was indeed not a problem, in which case they NEEDLESSLY tightened up the chamber. This is a non issue for me personally, as I don't feel the old chamber was a safety concern, nor do I feel the new chamber is any less reliable- however in an objective analysis it might be something for some to consider. Ymmv on comfort w/that.

the sub compact and service models of the xd's have captive recoil springs as well.

polygonal riflings are supposed to be more accurate, but i don't like the fact of not being able to use lead without having to worry about it.

Piney Woods, go to range and rent, beg & borrow from friends, just shoot both first. See which one points more naturally, and which one you shoot best. Both are fine pistols, and we all have our preferences, but you gotta get what fits you and your preferences. Have fun shootin.

Based on my experience with my XD 40, that is what I would go with. The XD is very comfortable in the hand, the ergonomics are awesome, its very accurate ( one ragged hole with 30 rounds of my reloads), and I've had zero malfunctions after 1100 rounds. The XD is also a better value with what comes in the package, mag loader, holster, 3 magazines.

+1 ugaarguy. Try both guns. Pick the one that feel/shoots best. I chose the XD because it just fit my hand better.

I have heard the same thing....that Glock recently redesigned their .40 chambers for more chamber support....but I can't find anything to confirm or substantiate this. Could you tell me where you got this information? I would just like to know if it is true. I have posted a query on Glock Talk about this subject and no one seems to have any information on it. Has anyone heard about this...when did it occur...is there a serial number range...has anyone seen pictures that showed the different chambers?????? Any info out there?

PC vs Mac
Ford vs Chevy
Canon vs Nikon

What I'm saying is both guns have stellar reputations. Try 'em both and see what YOU like.

(oh, and then buy the XD  )

Well, I have a Glock 23 and the wife has an XD-40 Service model. Really you aren't going to go wrong with either one. Both are very reliable, accurate and rugged. The Glock has a more durable finish but the wife, even with Florida heat and humidity, hasn't had a rusting issue. Then again, she's not a freakin' slob and actually cleans her weapons so IMHO, it's a non-issue. The Glock has the advantage of scads of parts being available for it and is also quite easy to work on. The XD is lower priced but replacement parts (while free from Springfield under their lifetime warranty) means a trip back to Springfield and aftermarket parts aren't as widely available either. The XD has another advantage of having ambidextrious magazine release buttons and the Glock has a lower bore axis although the low bore axis is really over-rated with times being only slightly , as in a couple hundreths of a second faster, between shots. The XD feels better to some and the Glock better to others and is going to be a personal preference. The XD trigger is lighter than the Glock but the reset is longer. Really, you are going to have kool-aide drinkers on both sides that will scream and shout that their XD or Glock is better than the Glock or XD but the reality is that either one makes a fine choice and the deciding factor should be for the end user as to which one feels better and can shoot better.

I'm not a 40 fan - I have owned a G23 & have fired the XD40 - I'd go w/ the Glock because I'm not a XD fan either :D

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that everyone compares their stuff to Glock??? :scrutiny:

Glock 23. Simpler design, less to go wrong. I don't have anything in particular against the XDs, and the Glocks have their shortcomings, but if someone handed me a gun out of a box and I had to defend myself with it; I'll take a Glock over anything other production handgun.

That being said, I carry CZs. I know mine always work, and I can shoot them better than anything else I've tried.

I have owned the G23 and XD.

Never had any malfunctions with either one, but I like the XD.

You're going to have to shoot both if possible. That's the only way for you to decide which one you like best.

Oh and whatever you do...don't try a CZ75B in .40!:D

Interesting that someone cites the grip safety as a negative for the XD. I wish every pistol had a well-designed grip safety - that's one extra selling point for the XD IMO.
