Our range has had a couple if incidents. We are in the process is implementing some new safety rule at one of the pistol ranges (the range where people seem to disregard rules). The usual rules are already in place: standard gun safety rules; no drawing from a holster; chamber flags must be used; etc. Do yall have any other ideas we can start that will help? We have a lot of solo shooters and you must sign in before shooting but this particular range is right at the entrance to the club and a lot of people don't take the time to drive to the main office to sign (which gives the ofc mgr a chance to see who it is, judge possible mental state, if they've been using drugs or alcohol, etc). Any ideas we can use to make it safer without having a guy with a bullhorn stand behind the line barking out orders?

A guy standing behind the firing line barking orders... oh wait, you don't want that. How about some CCTV cams on the fireing line. That way whoever is in the office can determine if somebody on the line has signed in or not.

One of the clubs that I teach at on occasions has a strobe with alarm on the FL for when the range goes cold. And when the rifle range goes cold, so does the pistol range because of the way that they are laid out.

You can also contact the NRA's shooting range services.

You can have all the rules you want and accidents are still going to happen. Stick with common sense rules, have an RO to strictly enforce safety, and promptly boot and/or ban anyone who insists on acting stupid.

At Belmont S.S.A.A. Range we have an R.O. who calls the range closed and checks that all rifles are empty every 1/2 hr or so, no handling firearms while people are checking targets.
Range includes posts and benchrest and goes out to 500m.
Very few safety violations and these are always picked up and rarely repeated.
Don't know the pistol range rules as I don't shot there.
This range has a very good safety record and few people question the rules as they are well posted-if they don't like them they don't have to stay.

Joesolo, you might get better results if you would go into more detail about what sort of behavior you're trying to prevent.
