New 4" Half Shroud GP100

I'd like it a LOT better without the Novak-ish sights, Houge's, and the billboard on the barrel.

Regular old adjustable sights and the old style rubber/wood insert grips with tasteful lettering would be a whole lot more appealing IMO.

Wow. I never thought they would produce another half-lug barreled GP100. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the only GP100s with 4" bbl and half-lug from the past were .38spl models. I don't think they made a 4" half lug in .357mag, so this could be new territory. I really really like it, especially with the new sights. Would be nice and easy to swap out for night sights, and I'd bet that with less forward weight, it balances for very fast handling.
I have a fixed-sight 4" .357 Magnum with no lug, just the shroud over the ejector rod, which is what I think folks mean by "half-lug." IIRC, mine was produced in 2002, going by a serial number table.

It's pronounced "Hogue", not Hoooge, and Ruger lost their source for the older rubber/insert grips quite a while back. :)

Hi All,

I'm not a revolver guy. I think this is a fine looking revolver. Is there any functional/practical difference between a 1/2 lug and a full lug? Thanks.

Dan

Weight, balance, and cosmetic appearance.

The full-lugged version resists muzzle rise fractionally better.

It's not my cup of tea.

I much prefer the original grip, sights, and barrel.
I'm glad mine has the original GP grips.
It feels like shooting a .32 Long, compared to the same .357 loads out of my 586.

Ruger & his Guns

I think Mr. Bill Ruger would be proud of the design & inovations that is offered on the GP platform these days in these times.

Me , I`m glad to see Rugers R&D department think "out of the box" for a change !!

Maybe a "Ruger Custom Shop" in the future ????

& for those "SIX SERIES" DA owners ,the GPs lockworks is similar but is all contained in the trigger housing, where on the 6s the latch & latch spring remain in the frame, the pawl/reset & hammer spring design is very similar.

I like the look, and I do not mind the "billboard". The RUGER GP100 (*Asterick needs to go) actually looks pretty good, and I like the ".357 MAGNUM" underneath.

Just thank your lucky stars there isn't a manual printed on the side.

There's been some discussion with one of their product managers about those rubber/wood grips.
Remains unresolved.

Manual's reduced to "Warning- Read Instruction Manual" in small letters on the bottom of the ejector rod shroud.
Can't even see it normally unless you look for it.

How's that new half lug Ruger shoot compared to your older Rugers?

That half-lug is one of the "older Rugers"...The 2002 and more recent runs are made on the old pattern

KGPF-340 for the stainless version, GPF-340 for the Blued version...

Here is my 1988 Stainless that has seen some 'use':

Sent my '88 back to have end-shake corrected this past summer.
Ruger also cleaned up all the scuffs & scars & returned it looking brand new.

I was wondering how his Security Six and Speed Six compared to the new 2014 Ruger as the OP had started this thread about.

I've never fired a half lug GP100, only my 6" full lug model. My purposes for having a handgun have changed since I bought my GP100 long ago, so I'm curious.

This MC is a shade more accurate overall than my 1975 Security-Six.

I'm not sure about the fiber optic front sight for rough use but that is easy to change. Big rugged easy to see fixed Novak rear sight, easy to see front sight, lighter weight for packing, tuned action.

I agree with the naysayers. Turn them down....

So I can buy one (hee, hee, hee)

This uses one of the better fiber-optics; a sturdy steel base, the pipe's completely enclosed on both sides, and protected on top with minimal exposure to damage.

I had seen one of the new 4" fixed sight short shroud on Gunbroker which was said to be brand new. I had not realized they did a run of them as DPris mentioned earlier. I just got one of the Wiley Clapp 3" and am looking forward this year to getting one of these new 4".

The one thing I like better about the GP over the Speed Six is that speed loaders seem to work more smoothly by fitting past the grips better. Not sure there is a real difference in practical accuracy or functioning as both the Speed Six and current GP fire as well as needed for the intended purpose.

Ah...Sorry...I misunderstood...

As for the half-lug 4", I prefer it to my Sister's 4" full lug adjustable sight model...

For some reason, mine just seems to 'point' better for me...

I keep telling myself that I will get around to doing a job on it with Mother's or Flitz, but I never seem to get around to it...

I suppose I should just bite the bullet and send it to Ruger...

I dislike a high-polish stainless, had no interest in polishing mine.
Had no real interest in cleaning up the various dings on it acquired in 25 years. Showed character. :)

Ruger just took it on themselves to clean it up, and returned it looking new with the same brushed stainless finish.
No charge, even, but I don't know if they'd do that for free if it's the only reason the gun's sent in.

I just saw the first one on Gunbroker. Starting price $779. Seller said he won't sell to an FFL, only to an end user. Thought that was a stand-up thing to do.
