New Car Carry Gun

I had been carrying a Kahr MK9 most of the time, except when it was cooler here in Texas and I could carry my Kimber PC Ten II. But I got to thinking that since my job takes me to most of the court and sub court houses in N. Texas, (Computer Tech for TXDoT) I couldn't take it in with me anyway and had to leave it in the car in my lock box. But what if my car was broken into while I was inside and they stole my gun, they would have to have a hammer to beat the box out of shape to get it open, but they would have my gun. I decided I didn't want to loose a $600-$800 gun. So I decided I wanted something cheap and reliable that wouldn't hurt my wallet so badly if stolen. So yesterday I went down to my LGS and they had this Taurus PT-25 for only $175, (yes I know 25 ACP). It seemed to function properly and so I picked up a box of 50rds and went down to the range a couple of miles away to see how it shot. First off I liked the tip-up barrel and the 9+1 capacity, and I was really surprised at how accurate it was. The first 20rds I kept in the big red circle around the X ring, getting used to the sights and trigger, The second 20 I kept in the X ring all at 7yds. I did google the Taurus PT-25 and almost all of the postings said it was a POS and you'd do better just throwing it at the BG. But I didn't find this to be the case, it was very accurate and easy to fire, not jams of any kind in 40rds and I like it. Anyone have one of these that turned out to be a gem of a find? Now if it's stolen I'll be mad but at least I can go and find another one for not a whole lot of money.

You better hope the sound scares them off because I really doubt a .25 acp is going to do much to stop a man. Might be an alright carry gun for really hot summer weather when people aren't wearing much more than a t-shirt. I wouldn't even run hollow points in that thing for fear that they wouldn't penetrate enough.

But, the gun you take with you is better than the gun you leave at home, and hopefully you never have to use it anyway.

Just learn how to shoot it well, the lighter the round you use, the better the shot placement will have to be in a self defense situation. I am sure it will be very useful on hot days.

Most any gun of any caliber can be deadly with spine/brain shot....however, tip-ups have one critical shortcoming....no extractor....misfire or jam means no tap/rack/bang possible, and leaves the owner trying to tip the barrel up and clearing a round with fingernails.

Believe me, good gun, good caliber. That's right good caliber.

So many people overlook a .25, but it does what it was designed to do, small package, more power than.22. You got 10 fricking shots to! I'm almost positive, but after the first few, they will get the hint. You'll take it with you more places as well due to the size and cost.

I'd try more than 40 rounds, maybe 100 more to be sure of reliability. On BoxOTruth.com they say to use FMJ for defensive ammo.

Only downside I see is cost of the ammo.

Several comments

There may be some alternatives that you could consider.

But first of all, a used Kahr MK9 is worth about $500, not $600 to $800. I bought a nice used one last year for $500 with a little shopping around. So the difference between the Kahr price and the cheaper gun is less than you thought. Also, since you own the Kahr, the cheaper gun will be an additional expense on top of your previous purchase of the Kahr.

Another step you could consider is a better lock box, which might not cost that much and would give you peace of mind and better security. I take it the lock box you have is loose and not attached to the car. That makes it easy to steal. How about a heavier box, bolted to the car with bolts inside the box? That is much harder to steal.

You also might look into insurance to cover the gun if it is stolen from the car. Would your auto or homeowner's insurance add a $500 gun to the policy for an additional annual fee? I believe the NRA also sells insurance against gun theft.

I think the Kahr MK9 is a far better defensive gun than any .25 caliber, which isn't much better than a .22.

For what it is worth I know two people who have been shot straight through the heart with a .25 and a .22 one took two hits in the heart both are alive. Both say that it did not slow them down one bit. They did not know they had been hit till it was all over. Which was the the BG beat to a bloody mass of meat on the ground in both cases.
Yes .22 and .25 are used to make hits but those are done by pros with the victim on their knees shot at the base of the skull into their brain. Without enough power to exit the bullet bounces around and scrambles the brain. That will NOT be happening in SD. So unless you are planning a hit I would not use one.
The other thing you need to consider is that non fatal shots can and do give the target super strength similar to a crazy person. In effect making whatever threat you had worse, stronger angrier crazier. I would not carry one for SD ever
You can get a Bersa Thunder .380 for around $300 out the door. A Stoeger Cougar 9mm for around $400 and an XD.45 for under $500. All three excellent guns. I suppose the question is Is your life and those you love worth risking losing $300? My wife and children mean a lot more than that to me than that. I would never ever endanger their lives by choosing to carry a .22 or .25. Given a choice I think I would opt to use a bat first. I know I would take a bat against a .22 any day

Guys I'm sorry I didn't notice the topic I listed as New Carry Gun instead of New Car Carry Gun. I'm like the rest of you about defending myself and family, I either carry the MK9 or I carry the Kimber Pro Carry Ten II. But since I don't want to lose an expensive gun when I'm at work to a car breakin I bought the PT-25 just to have in the car incase something happens during my to and from work drive. My question was "has anybody else done this also", but I was surprised at the accuracy of this little gun at 7yds. I kept all 20rds in the X ring, that was part 2 of the comment if anyone else had been surprsed buy a cheap gun being accurate. So let me hear from you and NO I don't risk my families well being on a $175 gun, but then again I would not be as upset over it getting stolen like I would one of my more expensive guns.
