A man practicing sharp shooting at the indoor range at Ray's Sporting Goods in North Plainfield accidentally shot himself in the leg this afternoon, officials said.
Scott Loglisci, 31, was putting his 9mm Beretta back in its hip holster when the gun fired at about 2 p.m., said police chief William Parenti. The bullet pierced Loglisci's upper right thigh and came out about a half-inch down his leg.
Loglisci, who is from Scotch Plains, is in stable condition at Overlook Hospital in Summit, Parenti said.
The store has a good safety record, Parenti said.
"I’m not aware of many accidents there at all," he said. "I can’t even think of the last one."
Parenti guessed that the shooter must caught his finger in the trigger or that the holster caught the trigger as he was putting it away.
"He must have done something wrong," Parenti said. "Certainly the only way a gun goes off is if the trigger is pulled."
The store sells sporting goods and hunting equipment, including guns. A store manager who only identified himself as Dave confirmed the shooting.
"We did have an accident this afternoon," he said.
