After many years away from doing anything gun related, I'm just getting back into it. As a teen I had a number of rifles and a few revolvers, including a S&W 19 that I loved. I even got into reloading. Lost interest and slowly sold off my guns, especially when I got married. My wife had had some bad experiences with firearms and was very scared of them. So I sold all except a Ruger 10/22 which I had traded my reloading gear for. Sat in its box, unfired, for years.
With a busy life, gun-shy wife, and bad eyes, I assumed I'd never really shoot again. Then I just got the itch one day and went out shooting my 10/22. Then my 10-year-old daughter put a bug in my ear to go shoot pellet guns. My wife signed off (to my surprise), we bought a kid-sized pellet gun, and have had a lot of fun with it.
I also started thinking more about personal defense, after reading about the loosening of CCW restrictions. At first I found the idea a little shocking. I remember going to Arizona about that time and seeing someone in Bisbee carrying uncovered, and being very uncomfortable with it. (Still not sold on open-carry.) But I'm seriously considering it. I recently bought a Kahr CW9, my first auto pistol, and a good CCW weapon, I think. First range day was a little surprising (bucks harder than I expected, and loud), but that day might have been life-changing. I walked straight out and decided: Yeah baby, I want to shoot IDPA!
So next week I'm going to purchase a .22 auto pistol that I can afford to practice a lot with (I'm an awful shot) and then later this year, if luck holds, I'll get a Glock 17 to shoot SSP with. I'll also be attending local IDPA matches, to observe, learn, and hopefully make some new and helpful friends. I've told my wife my intentions, and she seems ok with it. Firearm storage is her only real concern right now. When I get up the guts to explore CCW with her, I'll let you know. (Actually, it seem to me you must have a CCW to shoot IDPA, technically, since you start covered. Technically works for me . . .)
Sorry for the long intro.
