I am new here, but have been shooting my whole life. I purchased a new Ruger 10/22 for my wife and we have had it out to the range about 5 times. Yesterday, I had bought a brick of winchester rounds, these things were very dirty and really gummed up the works on this gun. When we got home I completely striped it down. I have encountered a problem that led us to ending our day at the range. When the bolt is locked back, it is very difficult to get it to re-engage and go forward again. When it does, it works fine, but when it is time to lock the bolt back, it again is very difficult to get it to go forward again. ANY idea's, has anyone ever encountered this?

I've been lurking for quite some time and decided to join up. I'm well into my 60's and am getting back into shooting after 20 years out. I've done various kinds of shooting since I was a kid. Haven't done a lot of competitive shooting. But I did some small bore rifle and pistol when I was young, and some IMHSA (metallic silhouette) pistol shooting back in the 80's and 90's. I reload mostly rifle and pistol. Though I've done some shotgun reloading too. I've used guns for a lot of things, including self-protection. So it's nice to see a forum here for just about every interest I've ever had.

Gun owner since November of 2008 (hmm?)

I'm a new member to this forum but have been exercising my 2nd amendment rights for almost 4 years now. I belong to the NRA and vote in every election for the most conservative gun rights candidate on the ballot and have done so all my voting life. I belong to the local gun range where I practice with my family every chance I get.

I believe in paying attention to what the politicians do and say because they are too often 180 degrees out of phase. This is vital for the protection of our 2nd amendment rights because they are under assault constantly.

Another New Guy

A realize this is a bit longer than most introductions but I had already written it beforehand: it'll certainly tell you about myself and where I'm coming from.....

Though never having any exposure to firearms growing up, I have developed over the last few years a strong passion and appreciation for the important role they serve in the lives of responsible law-abiding citizens. Having been an owner of a few these last few years, I've only recently applied for and received my carry permit in the state of Texas for a few months now which has further widened my appreciation of the 2nd Amendment more so.

I have many like-minded friends and associates with which I can talk about issues impacting firearms; however I'm almost completely new to the online community arena. Forgive me if I slip up in posting to the wrong area or ask a common question covered a thousand times before in a forum or posting that I may have over looked. I've briefly been a member of a discussion board years ago where tolerance for this was very low and haven't cared to actively participate in any others since then.

However this time, I have something that I am DEEPLY concerned about; not just for myself, not just for my friends but for my rights, my country and those who work to build upon and protect the standards and value of life and liberty.

Generally, I'm a fairly quite kind of guy who listens far more than he speaks. Actually, when I do speak I tend to be quite long winded (such as now), but I am my father's son and I seem unable to stop myself :) Anyway, I've been becoming increasingly driven to be more proactive in finding ways to help further awareness in the importance of protecting our RKBA liberties, but there's only so much one man can do by himself. Community coordination seems to be the most impacting means of addressing our concerns.....at least in my opinion.

Anyway, I look forward to reading and helping out where ever I can; be it activism, opinions on hardware or if a certain piece of gear makes you look fat.

Also, I've also joined two other groups like this one so if you're a member there and see this introduction again, I'm just trying to save myself time by reusing this introduction and only this introduction. I don't know if this is even an issue but if it were I just wanted to clarify.

I'm a 17 year veteran of the GA Dept. of Corrections. I had to sell most of my guns due to financial problems and have just started building back. I recently inherited a Colt Mustang .380 and a Ruger 44 Mag Carbine (the older bottom loading model). I'm looking forward to using the carbine this deer season to honor my dear departed father-in-law, who actually taught me a lot of what I know about guns and hunting.

I'm Rick, I live in San Francisco East bay area. Been hunting and shooting for a long time. I own a few pistols, rifles, shotguns and 2 muzzle loading rifles. My favorite sport is whitewater kayaking, I fish a bit, mostly on the rivers that I paddle and still find time to hunt once in a while though not as much as I used to.
 
Hello from Colorado. I have been reading on this site for years and finally decided to join. I am better with a gun than I am with a computer which has inhibited me from joining. I enjoy hunting, deer, elk, antelope, and turkey. My wife and I both have our concealed carry permits and are glad we live in a state that has minimal governmental obstruction to our right to own, shoot, buy both guns and ammo, or carry as we deem necessary. We shoot several times a month on our neighbors property where we can do ranges from pistol distance to 300 yds for rifle. My gun intrests cover hunting and personal defense with pistol, shotgun and various rifles. Like someone once said "so many guns and so little time".
 
Howdy all, I'm a new guy here from WAY up in northern California. I'm an active poster on other gun forums, and a moderator on another one. I'm constantly lurking here so I figured I would just join the great community that's been built here.

Hey all I'm Jimmy I'm a big fan of any gun I can afford to buy. I love the AK platform & revolvers most of all. I took a buck @ 275yds w/the AK & a grouse(neck shot) @ 40 or so yards. Revolvers, give me a big bore short barrel every time. Check out my AK on you tube @ AK long shot. You don't see to many of those AK's hitting the target @ 600yds.

Hey everyone my name is Max and I'm from Portland, OR. I'm 25 and have always loved shooting and been a gun nerd since pretty young. I just got my CHL a few weeks ago and carry a .40 Sig SP2022. I also have a shotgun, assault rifle, and hunting rifle, as well as several other pistols. I'm new to the whole message board thing so if I don't get your acronyms or slang I apologize for my cultural ignorance. But I love guns and that's what I'm here to talk about!
 
Hi, my name is Tim from N. Alabama, moved here 4 years ago after 20+ years in Southern California. It is refreshing to have the pro-gun culture here in Alabama after the anti-gun culture in California. I have recently got my CCW permit but have not carry yet until I feel a bit more comfortable. I am a long time gun collector (since '89) but sorry to say not spend enough time on the range (work & life, you know how it goes). I have a range of handguns from .22LR to .45acp, and several long gun collections including Mosin 7.62X54R, SKS, Saiga 7.62X39, AMD-65, Savage .22lr bolt, and Browning A-bolt .308. I've learned a lot from reading the posts here on THR and appreciate the "high road" approach in this forum. Thanks.
 
Hello everyone. My name is Ethan, from Arkansas. I was raised around guns, and have been fascinated by them for my entire life. I love taking them apart, seeing how they work, and fiddling around with them. My current collection includes a Ruger 10/22, H&R 20 gauge, Spanish Mauser, and a Swedish Mauser that has, sadly, been sporterized and converted to .270. I'm currently saving up my pennies and aluminum cans to add an AR-15 and a few handguns to my collection.

In my time spent lurking these forums, I have found TheHighRoad.org to be much more polite and informative than any other gun forum on the internet. I sincerely hope that I will be able to help out around here. Thank you!
 
New Member...

Hello all... I know my registration date is several years ago but I recently (2 days ago) purchased my first firearm!!! I am the proud owner of a new Marlin Model 60 and looking forward to shooting it this weekend, and introducing the girlfriend to the sport, at an outdoor range, run by the community association in a PA neighborhood my parents have a 2nd home in. I live in NJ (unfortunately). I picked up a thousand rounds of CCI Standard Velocity and 333 Winchester while buying the rifle, not realizing of course that $30 isn't "cheap" in this hobby like it is in some other pursuits. I will buy a bunch of those 50 round packs at a *-mart in PA to see what the gun particularly "likes".

Anyway glad to be on board and hope to get active in the forum. I hope to add a .22 caliber pistol and shotgun to the collection so that I can enjoy all aspects of the sport. I'll be investing in a scope sooner than later for the rifle I am sure.

I have read about safe storage and "trigger locks". My rifle came with a lock that fits into the open chamber and I stored in in a soft Field&Country camo bag. I get the feeling that there's no such thing as a "substitute" for a trigger lock in NJ law if a minor could access the firearm, so this chamber lock is nice but does it meet the law, or do I need to buy another? Dick's offered a five dollar rebate for purchase of a lock...but they didn't have any to sell!

Welcome aboard. I'm glad your starting your girl friend out on a 22.

I have no idea about NJ laws and what they require as far as any locks.

I just have to warn you though about shooting, It's addictive!

Well, .22 shells are not what you would consider "cheap" but they are the cheapest fun you can have in the sport of shooting. Also the Marlin Model 60 is one of the "better bang for your bucks" that you can get.

Budget in a storage solution better than a gun case soon. Cases are known to trap moisture next to your gun. Moisture + steel = sad gun owners. A first gun is something to cherish, welcome to the sport. I assure you it is going to get expensive, but it is worth it.
 
Hey all! I've been lurking this sight for some time, and initially heard of it from gunnit (reddit.com/r/guns). It's seems like a great forum, so I decided to join tonight.

I like old war horses. I got a 1943 Izhevsk Mosin Nagant 91/30, a 1954 ATF Turkish Mauser, a 1974 Yugoslav SKS, a Ruger 10/22, and a Mossberg 590. I should be getting a Lee Enfield No4 MkI sometime soon as well as a Marlin 336W in 30-30Win. Hopefully, I'll have enough funds for an M1 some time next June.

Hi,

I've been lurking here a long time, having registered over a year ago, but have just read and learned so far. I am a knife collector, car collector, book collector, heck everything collector, but my wife would never entertain the notion of my becoming a gun collector. Without a gun to hang my hat on, I never could get interested in guns. The learning curve is steep and I needed something to focus on to get me started.

I have no family interested in guns and did not grow up with guns around, so it was a hard step to get that first one. (Except the 1950s .410 shotgun in the closet I thought was a rifle, and my parents who had a .32 Ortgies I didn't know about.)

I had a friend who was into guns, but I couldn't get interested in them without having one of my own. Because of jobs and family, I did not get to hang with him much (plus, I am not a "hang out with 'em" person anyway) so the bug did not rub off much except for a few trips to the range and gun rentals.

One day, I got seated next to a co-worker that collected guns, and I had someone I could ask the dumb questions to as they occurred to me and walk me through the purchasing process.

Finally I convinced my wife that a good Texan should have a handgun, rifle and shotgun, and the game was on! (That was a big step, going from "There will never be a gun in this house without a divorce first" attitude.)

A few more guns, a few more fights and a year or so down the road later, I have a modest accumulation, but am not allowed to "collect". :) Now guns are not a forbidden topic and she has come a long way, talking about CHL, shooting, gun operation, home tactics, getting something she can keep in the car, buying land to shoot on... etc.
