Depending on how it is implemented, the implications of this change could be huge. With the stroke a of a pen and without the consent of Congress, ATF bureaucrats could make ANY gun part or accessory (including magazines) or ammunition that were originally manufactured or perhaps even those designed for military use no longer legal for importation for civilian use. That might mean no more milsurp parts sets. No more milsurp magazines. No more milsurp ammo. No more milsurp optics. Perhaps not even spare firing pins. This could be ugly.

I should add, though, that I can find absolutely no credible evidence that this is in the works. Don't panic, yet.

I highly doubt Obama would do that. His pet issue of gun control was defeated in the body of the legislature that his party controls. Talk about impotent. That made him look bad. To defy the will of the people via executive fiat will only galvanize more people against him. I suspect that the vast majority of gun control we'll have to be fighting in the couple of months won't be at the federal level, but rather the state and local.

Some of the info is incorrect. The UN treaty didn't pass the Senate. I'd love to know an actual source for the behind the scenes information discussed.

I'm not saying it won't happen. Personally I think if he did it would open a storm of new manufacturers in the US, which would be a good thing.

He does not seem to care what we think or how much or how many of us hate him.

After his little blow up when the Senate defeated his registration, er background checks bill I would not be surprised if he banned imports out of spite.

Action? Not Executive Orders. Seems the author doesn't understand the difference. Until he issues EO that have the effect of law, and that we can look up to read for ourselves... IMO, this is rumor and hype. Links to a website, quoting another website that's talking about an article on anther website. (with links that don't back up the claims)

His "executive actions" are just a to-do-list. Recirculated through some rumor mill it comes out sounding like he's secretly ordered new law. No he hasn't. (not yet)

I've got it on a PDF.

It's very vague, and on the last page next to nothing is defined. It appears to be a case similar to the NFA's definition of 'shotguns', however.

Technically, they could ban every single shotgun bar the .410 as being a destructive device, right down to single shot break actions.

It still isn't likely that they would.

I would have to agree with joeschmoe.

Authority has been ceded, and changed hands, but there is nothing in this that indicates they are now able to exercise any more powers than they had already been given, nor does it indicate that the process for selecting items for import restriction is any easier or more straightforward. (In fact it's an arguable point that it might be MORE difficult, as the text clarifies that the Attorney General, in exercising his authority, must obtain concurrence from both Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense, while providing official notice to the Secretary of Commerce)
