Assault weapons ban proposed :fire:

WWL.com Reporting

New Orleans Police Chief Warren Riley says he would like to ban assault rifles in New Orleans. When the state legislature meets for the regular session in a couple weeks, they'll consider a bill to restrict ownership of such firearms.

Already filed for the regular session is a bill from New Orleans East lawmaker Cedric Richmond that would require registration of weapons deemed assault weapons, and another bill to ban their sale.

"I like to hunt, I own a rifle, but I shouldn't own an AK-47. I shouldn't have an Uzi," said Richmond.

This comes after New Orleans Police Chief Warren Riley said his officers are being overwhelmed by criminals' firepower.

"Will this fix it? No, but it will drive the cost of those weapons up tremendously on the black market," Richmond said.

Richmond says he expects the gun lobby to fight his bills.

Are there even any left in the city after they were illegally confiscated during Katrina? Dunno why he's bitching...all the 'bangers are in Houston now anyway.

I don't see why New Orleans wants or needs such a law. Why don't they just confiscate whatever it is the mayor and the cops don't like, just as they did before?

As for Cedric Richmond's confession, I'm glad that there's at least one honest lawmaker in New Orleans. I have no quarrel with his statement that he should not own an AK-47 or an UZI. "'I like to hunt, I own a rifle, but I shouldn't own an AK-47. I shouldn't have an Uzi,' said Richmond."

Since there's not much functional difference between the semi-automatic versions of those two and the semi-automatic rifles that Mr. Richmond might own, I don't think he should be allowed to own any semi-automatic firearms. The New Orleans Police Department needs to raid Mr. Richmond's home right away.

Mr. Richmond is a real thinker. He obviously wants to drive the cost of those firearms up so that the criminals work harder at their trade and raise enough money to pay the higher cost. New Orleans will be even more attractive to tourists when they know that the people who attack them are more serious.

I don't expect this to get much traction, but I thought I'd put it out there.

A point of curiousity, as I haven't see the text, if same is available, of the proposal. Did the proposers happen to actually define, in exact, understandable terminology, that which they would ban, or do we here, once again, see the usual exercise in terminology tossing?

Saw the LA Gov-elect interviewed not too long ago. Seemed pretty solid on the 2A, but we shall see. He stated it was an individual right and that is a plus.

'Assault weapons' are defined just like the expired Federal ban. The usual Brady definition...

The first is a registration scheme which prohibits any 'new' sales, but allows grandfathering.

The second is a bill that would make it illegal for felons to posess assault weapons...as if they could...

In other words, a big play on semantics, ie non functional, non operational considerations, in other words, more bo-ra-ha over and about cosmetic features, which gives rise to the following question.

If this sort of legislation were to be enacted, and manufacturers made cosmetic changes to their product, after all the legislation dealt with cosmetic features, rather than operational features, such as does the piece have selective fire capability AS OFFERED, think the anti's woukld still piss and moan about the makers having simply made cosmetic changes?

BTW, I believe that the above could be described as follows: And The Band Played On, after a book of the same name, that dealt with a different matter.

Is this the same guy who had is law lic pulled when he falsified residency to run for the NO City Council? The same one who has proposed Bill 869? He is a real prince among men in LA. I challenge anyone to show any photos of this guy hunting in the last twenty years.

He doesn't like AK's, so no one should have them?

Should their be a law in NOLA that outlaws CHINESE food because people in NOLA prefer cajun????

New Orleans Mayor Ray Negan said that "you don't need an assult weapon to "catch" a deer (he's so not with it) and the police cheif just stated on TV that "you don't need a large assult weapon for self-protection".

First, I checked the Constitution of the United States of America again and still didn't find any reference to deer hunting. We all know what the 2nd Ammendment states but the mayor is clueless. He and his lieutenants could not rob all of the good citizens of New Orleans of their well-needed firearms after the hurricane Katrina disaster so now they want to legislate them out of existance. Why do they think that more laws is the answer? Will more drug laws reduce drugs in New Orlenas. Will more immigration laws reduce illegal immigration? Will harsher penalties for murder reduce the murder rate in New Orleans? Then how will more gun laws reduce gun violence and murder?
The mayor, chief of police and their croneys are incompetent morons and instead of solving the crime problem, they want to ban an inanimate object.

My home in Slidell, LA, an adjoining city to New Orleans, was flooded during the hurricane and for 3 months afterwards while on my own property I had my Glock strapped to my side and at night, if I wasn't busy rebuilding my home, my AR-15 slung over my shoulder. This was in full view of the National Guard, the police and the sheriff departments. There were multiple B&E's in my sub-division, and some nights the silence was broken by gunshots. Our small city is very conservative and protected by an excellent law enforcement community and they considered me as an adjunct to their efforts. I have since sold the house and moved back to higher ground in my native state of Mississippi, but not the gulf coast.

Second, I also did not see the words "self-protection", "don't need", "ban", "restriction", or "assult weapon" in the 2nd Ammendment. The illinformed police chief also stated that in New York, victims are only shot about twice, as opposed to 7 or 8 times in New Orleans". He was referring to high capacity magazines. Does he really think that they do not exist in New York? It is obivious that he has his facts wrong. But wait a minute. It's impossible for people in New York to be shot because firearm ownership is highly restricted and it is illegal to carry a firearm in the streets. Yea, right.

Well, enough of my preaching, and I thank the choir members for listening.

ps: I joined this forum 3 years ago and have enjoyed reading it. This is my first post, but not the last. I like it here and think I'll stick around for awhile.

It all started because the CHP from Kali came to help and insisted on confiscating all they could find and did it without anyones orders:rolleyes:

Read it in the book all about confiscation of firearms and the CHP were working 24/7 because they are control freaks:D Not only that they wrote tickets to boaters for speeding

No wonder over 40% of the citizens of NOLA did not return after Katrina. With idiots like that in charge, who would want to.

Just my .02,

Well he said
"I like to hunt, I own a rifle, but I shouldn't own an AK-47. I shouldn't have an Uzi," said Richmond.

So according to his misleading lies he wishes to ban firearms already illegal NFA items possessed by the people the police are dealing with.

The statments he is giving are to scare the sheeple, to cause images of full auto fire in the sheeples' minds as they picture Uzis and AKs mowing down police.

So according to his statements he is asking for a law to ban that which is already essentialy 'illegal' and not possessed by criminals.

We of course know that is not the case.
We also have learned by experience that "assault weapon" is a forever changing term used to encompass more and more firearms at will. Take CA for example where even a single shot firearm chambered in .50 BMG is now an assault weapon, even a firearm that would require partial disassembly between each shot is an "assault weapon" under the law.

"Are there even any left in the city after they were illegally confiscated during Katrina? Dunno why he's bitching...all the 'bangers are in Houston now anyway."

Not exactly. There WERE a lot of bangers here, but OUR gangs drove most of them out. Of the nearly 300,000 who came to Houston, only about 100,00 refugees remain. Most of the bangers went home where they know how to play the game better. Houston was too much of a culture shock for them. Not only do the cops not take bribes, but the citizenry carry guns and they USE them. :)

Well, at least they're after assualt rifles, a highly-regulated NFA weapon. And he doesn't want an AK47 or an Uzi--well, select-fire's illegal for his purposes, so it doesn't matter.

But he should leave the civvy-legal versions alone, and someone should explain to him that an assualt weapon is any item used in an assault (say, this lead pipe, for example), wheras an assault rifle.....
.......heck, I'm wasting my breath, these guys will never get it.
