My biggest disappointment with the new rules is that they didn't change the minimum width for crossbows. Right now a crossbow has to be 17" wide at the pulleys (outside edges) to be legal for hunting. The industry is moving to narrower crossbows and soon NY hunters will be stuck hunting with bargain basement, entry level bows only.
I think the NY Crossbow Coalition keeps making a strategic blunder. They are lobbying for a number of changes, including opening up all of bow season to crossbows. I find bowhunters to be pretty jealous of their "alone time" to the point where many are upset about the youth hunt in October. Imagine being pissed that some kid might get a deer instead of you! Anyway, pushing to open up all of bow season to crossbow immediately mobilizes the very politically active NY Bowhunters Associations. Crossbow hunters already get the peak of the rut. We should be focused on other issues related to crossbows. Let the bowhunters sit out in the woods in early October when the hunting isnt very good and maybe they won't be so motivated to block changes to crossbow regs.
