Newbies to the range

Taking one of the gals from work and 2 teenage daughters to the range tomorrow. Mom is ex-military but hasn't shot in a while. Wants to learn to use her .38 revolver. Girls are 17 &15. They have a .22 rifle. I've got 2 .22 rifles a a few various pistols and enough ammo to make for a good day. They'll shoot one at a time until I'm satisfied they have the 4 rules down pat.

This all came about when the Mom asked the kids what they missed most about not having Dad around (divorced a couple years ago and out of the area). One of the girls said not having anyone to take them shooting, so I got recruited since Mom knew I am into guns. I think the whole bunch is already pro 2A, but maybe this will reinforce that ideology.

Wish me luck! Oh, yeah, I have balloons and 2 liter pop bottles, too!

RANGE REPORT! RANGE REPORT!!!

I'm no longer the "old fart"; I'm now the "Awesome Old Fart"!!!

Safety lecture: 4 rules etc, ,22 pistol a few times for each girl; both shot safely and well, for newbies. Red was actually pretty darned good with my little Smith 422 (certainly not a target pistol). SHe had some problems with her Marlin Mod 60 which turned ut to be bent mag lips which AOF fixed.

Mom mostly watched, but finally shot her .38, a 4" Taurus w/ target sights and a nice trigger. Couldn't hit crap, really uptight as is her nature.

Then they girls started working out the .38's, .22 SA, Glock 19 and .45Auto (1911 compact). Mom actually tried 'em all, too. Unfortunately, I didn't have any good .38 target loads, like 3 gr Bullseye. Gonna fix that! The girls kept going back to the S&W 422 and .45ACP. Then.........Mom says.......................
"I'd like to have a shotgun". I'd shot a few rounds outta my 870HD 12ga. since the girls had all the pistols, so I asked her if she like to try it? Yes.
She ran a few 1oz loads thru it and we cleaned up our mess and gave her .38 a quick cleaning. During the cleaning she said:"I've got the bug, I want a shotgun, and maybe another rifle (she has a .257, don't know if she's ever shot it.) How much are dues, family rate?"

To make a good day better, and my story longer: 10yr old (or so) and dad and grandpa were zeroing the kid's 30-30 for deer season; dad and grandpa doing all the shooting.
I asked if he could shoot the pistols? OK, so he shot the .22SA, Blackhawk w/.38's and G19. Didn't hurt his day any, either! LOL

Way to go my friend! The sooner you give them the experience and education of proper firearms ownership and marksmanship skills, the stronger their beliefs of Second Amendment rights.

Sounds like "Mom" needs to learn trigger control and proper grip. I had the same problem as well at first. Got the grip down and manage proper recoil control, followed by trigger control and maintaining that front sight, which finally put my DA shots right on target. Might even want to suggest to her to try shooting the .38 SA until she gets more comfortable with the recoil and has learned proper grip and stance.

Her Taurus Satin Nickel, I think, has a really nice trigger, both DA & SA but crummy grips. She was just uncomfortable 'cause her teenage daughters were watching her not doing too well and there were 7 or 8 firearms "lying around". I think with some lighter loads and less audience, better instructor, she'll do fine. Maybe let her shoot from a rest so there's less to manage. But she's hooked!!
