I needed something to occupy me while I waited for the dew to dry up before I could mow grass so I gathered up six 22 rimfire pistols. Yes, one of them was a revolver but I'm old and remember when all handguns were just pistols so that's whatcha get. I headed to the one and only range in this area where I'm a member and proceeded to kill some paper and compare some different brands of ammo.
The guns were a Ruger MK IV Target, Ruger MK III 22/45 Lite, a cherry Hi-Standard HD-M that I inherited from my dad, Walther PPQ 22, long barreled Phoenix, and a Rossi Plinker with a 6" barrel. I shot CCI SV, Aguila Pistol Match, and Remington Golden Bullets. I shot from sandbags.
Both the Rugers wear reflex red dot sights. The Mk III has a TandemKross muzzle brake and both have Volquartson trigger kits. I was quite surprised at my shooting results. I was shooting at 20 yards because at anything farther than that If my front sight is sharp the target becomes just a fuzzy blob. Everything else had iron sights.
It was no surprise that the CCI ammo was the most accurate in any of the guns. What was surprising was that the Remington outshot the Aguila. Match ammo my foot and I'm guessing by the recoil and sound that it isn't subsonic either. I was also quite surprised and also pleased that my best groups were with the Hi-Standard. One inch at 20 yards with essential tremors and cataracts ain't bad in my opinion. It beat both the Rugers even with their red dot sights. I've always loved this old gun but shoot it very little anymore. The Rossi came in next. The Walther gave me quite a bit larger groups which I expected with it's short sight radius but it beat the Phoenix with it's longer radius. Ammo performance was consistant across all guns. CCI the best, Aguila the worst.
The afternoon wasn't as pleasant. Mowing grass isn't nearly as much fun as a range trip. The front and back yards do look good again though and I won't have to do this many more times this year. The drawback is that the season that makes grass mowing no longer necessary makes range trips not so pleasant either.
