I bought a Mossberg 500a for critter control around the farm my parents were renting. But, I quickly figured out that should I ever need it for home defense, it's WAY too big, long and bulky to carry through the house. The barrel combined with the buttstock was the problem. If I needed to shoot it quickly or in a confined area or both, I was screwed. I had to fully mount the shotgun to aim or fire reasonably. Also, the thing was so friggin' long that I was deathly afraid that it'd be snatched from me in the event of a break in if I came through a doorway with a BG on the other side. The gun would come through the doorway a good 3 feet or so before I could even see the BG. Then I figured out a couple catholic priests from my sister's past followed us half way across the country with the intent on taking her out. (eliminating witnesses, no joke) I then took the opportunity to buy some buckshot and turn my shotgun into a tactical shotgun. I bought a pistol grip, stuck the 20" barrel on the gun, stuck a 6 shell holder on the side of the reciever, had to buy a new frontend to avoid hitting the shellholder with the stock frontend grip because the stock one overlaps the reciever at full pump. That made it WAY shorter and much faster and easier to shoot quickly without fully mounting the gun. However, just because it's stereotypically superior for home defense, I would not recommend a shotgun. I would highly recommend a high capacity case-spitter. Take a high-capacity auto that fits like a glove, puts the center of gravity as close to the center of your grip as possible, shoots a cartridge you're comfortable with and aims naturally. All the rest of the details are opinion and people will tell you what works best FOR THEM. You however need what's best for you. Oh, almost forgot! You need it to have a tactical rail and you need to mount a flashlight to that rail. After taking my altered Mossberg through the house well after dark to see what I'd be facing if these priests should murder again I figured out that it's almost impossible to see, let alone aim and shoot accurately in a high stress, high adrenaline situation when it's pitch dark inside. Also, there's legal issues about shooting someone in the pitch black of night and not being able to see them. The lawyers will argue that you shouldn't have shot him because if you couldn't see then you didn't really know for sure that he had a weapon, was agressive, posed an immediate lethal threat to yourself or your family, yak yak yak... If you used a light, you'd put all that B.S. to rest. Also, when it's pitch black inside and you flip on a tactical rail mounted SureFire and start yelling to drop the weapon and get your hands up (and such things), they're probably gonna do it because they know you've got a gun, and they're now blinded and their eyes are watering. You'll be able to see where you're aiming, you'll shut the lawyers up and you might just defuse the situation before it turns lethal. Besides that, a high capacity auto loader has many more bullets than a shotgun and can shoot them faster, it's more comfortable to use, more mobile, and there's less chance of it getting snatched from you because you're carrying around an anti-aircraft cannon in CQB.
BTW, they're not suspects in the murder case because the cops that have jurisdiction over the case are 1) catholic and refuse to raise a hand against a priest, 2) graduated with their criminal justice degree from the very catholic university the priests last worked at and are therefore scared of having their degree confiscated, and 3) have recieved so many phony and worthless tips pointing to the catholic priests that the cops refuse to even listen to more people pointing to priests. When my sister tried giving her statement over the phone (we were about 1600 miles away and therefore made a in-person visit impossible) they listened until she said "two priests" and promptly cut her off and hung up on her. Problem is that both priests knew she saw them in the act and they traced us via the church we went to half way across the country when we moved. Since then I moved back home, my parents quietly moved to the other side of the state and my sister joined the navy as a form of self imposed witness protection because those ^!((#^@$$*% cops won't bother to listen to her, protect her, and help her. We've now given them the slip and they're gonna get away with murder because the case has hit the cold case file and the cops refuse to look into anything leading towards catholic priests. This whole experience has made me more bitter and predjudice against law enforcement than actual murderers. "Serve and protect" MY ASS!! Also, my new personal motto is now "Never trust a catholic priest unless you're packing heat."
Thank you for letting me get that off my chest. I needed that. Here's to the moderators not deleting my post! heh
