Another G19 here... with a light, and loaded with Federal 124 gr +P EFMJs. Spare mag in the drawer as well. I figure 30 rounds should be sufficient to stop all but the most determined zombie attack. :)

I say any full size pistol you're comfortable with. That said, I have a little G27 by my bed.

I wasn't looking for anyone to believe me. If you think I'm lieing, so be it, I wasn't trying to convince anyone in the first place. Neither was I trying to get any sympathy (which is a good thing because I didn't get any). Besides, getting the feds involved is much easier said than done. The feds are like a cruise ship. Once you get it moving it's almost impossible to stop but it almost takes an act of God to get the feds to start moving on it in the first place.

XD-40 with two 12 round magazines loaded with Gold Dot 165's and a Mossberg 500 leaning against the nightstand, 6 rounds of #1 buckshot. I'd say I'm covered.:D

If you'll humor me, I've got a little story before I divulge my HD choices.

Spending Christmas with the other half's family, we somehow got onto the topic of self defense. Now, her parents aren't antis but they're in the mindset they live in an affluent gated community, they have nothing to fear. I thought to myself many a time, "Fools." Anyway, her older sister who just got married this last summer was talking about my baby girl who was at that time unborn. She says to us, "Now you have to remember to raise the baby right, don't raise him/her around weapons and don't ever teach her how to use guns." My girlfriend and I looked at each other and chuckled. I'm an avid weapons lover, guns were my second true love after martial arts, my girlfriend my third true love. I'm a second degree black belt in Karate, Bojutsu and Kenjutsu. I also have a black sash in Hung Gar Gung Fu. I've got a small arsenal of melee weapons in my home as well as being an avid archery fanatic, I've got a small collection of traditional bows too. Of course, I've got my small collection of guns as well. Her sister has always had her head stuck so far up her own rear end she doesn't smell her own crap. That's beside the point though. That comment started up a conversation on guns and their place in society. When the issue of home defense comes up, her words were as follows.

"I don't need or want any guns in my house. If someone breaks into my home, my husband is a boxer. His dad was a boxing instructor. He can take care of any threat that comes into our house."

I asked her then what if the intruder had a gun. Here's her reply:

"He's a good enough boxer that he can disarm a guy with a gun."

I've studied martial arts for 15 yrs. I've been taught how to disarm a gunman if he/she is within reach. My girlfriend and I just looked at each other and shook our heads. Her husband was more intelligent. He shook his head too and had this look on his face of "I can't believe what my wife just said" but he told me later on that as much as he agreed with me, he won't have guns in the house because his wife doesn't want them.

My girlfriend knows how I feel and I'll say it here. You can tell me if I'm out of line in thinking this but...

Its people like her sister that makes the world difficult for us gun owners and its because of people like her that crooks can still thrive. Aside from that, she's awfully presumptuous in trying to tell us how to raise our child, especially when she hasn't been a parent yet.

Anyway, back on topic.

I keep a Springfield GI Issue 1911A1 clone loaded with 230gr Hydrashoks and 2 extra mags in my nightstand. Of course, I'd go for my Mossy 500A leaning between my side of the bed and my nightstand that's loaded with 00 buck. My gf has a Taurus 608 loaded with magtek 38sp. in her nightstand. I also keep my Taurus M44 loaded with 240gr HP stashed between the mattress and box spring on my side.

You gun should be one that you practice regularly with and have confidence with.

Mine is a GLOCK 23 with a M6 tactical laser/light on the rail and my Bushmaster Carbine guilty of loitering next to the nightstand.

I believe that a handgun is a tool to utilize in fighting your way to your rifle.
