Just a lot of Springfield love. I've owned 3 Colt 01991's and 3 Springfield GI full sized autos.

I've got to state my honest opinion: The Colts were disappointing in the following areas:
1. Function: suffered random ejection.
2. Rust: the blueing is NO LONGER UP TO PAR
3. Had to send a slide back for rough refinishing.

SPRINGFIELD:

PARKERIZED; NO RUST
SERIES 70 - EXCELLENT TRIGGER
QUALITY: AT LEAST ON PAR WITH COLT.

Just a comparison. I'll personally never buy another Colt. Grips are from Hillbillygrips.

Oh yes, and cost - Springfield cost $200 less.
While true, quality does cost; so does a Brand name. Colt is no longer the same quaility it was at the working mans price level.

Fire away. The TRUTH is the TRUTH.

I dont think you can compare your 1991 Colts to your who knows what Springer's you got. Seems unfair. Not a fan of 1991's in the first place.

The only new-production 1911 I would even consider would be an SR.
Oh come on. Because of the price and cs? I get that but mine isn't anything special. The black "engraving" and coating wore off fast. DW is the way to go for "budget" 1911's imo :D

Forgot about the DW......

Last I heard they were discontinued, or going to be, though.

DW discontinued 1911 lines over the years. Still have some great production 1911's.

What exactly are they discontinuing? You have me worried. I love DW, even the CZ manufactured.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is, other than to express disappointment with Colt 1911s and crow about a Springfield.

Dunno about that. Checked the prices lately? SA 1911s keep going up, and the Colts came down within the last years. An SA Loaded is about the same price as the Colt Competition.

Colt's quality came up drastically in the past few years and some nice pistols have come out. I have no issue with SA -- I've owned probably five or six, including the G.I., the Mil-Spec, Micro-Compact LW Loaded, SS Loaded Champion, and a couple TRPs. Dunno if I'm qualified to talk about Colts; I've only owned about 17 of 'em since, oh, about 1976 or so.

It's all good. They're 1911s.

Read it somewhere, didnt pay much attention at the time. Could very well be wrong.

Perhaps you were thinking of the Valor (and VBOB) which were discontinued a while back, then brought back in a inferior form, in my opinion.

Far as I know they are still going strong, putting out new models and all.

DW is the only production 1911 I'd buy today, I've had just about them all below semi custom over the years and they are the only ones I'd spend on money now.

Production that is, I dipped my toe in the semi custom and just can't go back now. Semi and full from here on out, except perhaps a DW ECP 9mm or Bruin.

Curious as to why you think the new Valors are inferior?
Dan Wesson, thanks to the China Flu and the state of NY, has been shut down since March.

Agreed. Anecdotal information is just that.

I have a 2012-production Colt Government XSE that has been absolutely flawless in operation. A friend has a Springfield 5” Range Officer that has been problematic from day one. Both guns cost within $100 of each other, but one has proven to be superior to the other.

Again - that’s anecdotal information, but it does serve to color one’s opinion.

the only things I've found modern era colt does very is poorly matching grips to the gun as in ambi grip on non ambi. laziness in parts and/or picking properly. also doing grip safety tensions. always loose and rattely, and no tension to it.......or done poorly and doesn't match trigger bar properly. I like mine though and i didn't find the bluing poor at all.

Springfield while many dislike them. i feel they do a decent job and i like mine.

strange, my 1991 has been stellar. If you are comparing new 1991's to new springfields, I can't speak to that...but I have been nothing but happy with my older park'd 1991 and wouldn't hesitate to buy another 1991 of the same era over a springfield, all things being equal. I've had at one time my 5" 1991, a 1991 combat commander, a 1971 combat commander, and a sig sauer 1911...of those, the two 1991's were very reliable, the older combat commander was touch and go on bullet profiles, and the sig was an expensive disaster I was happy to see go down the road.

Oddly enough the 5" and combat commander 1991's plastic trigger were the best triggers of the bunch, much better than the "match" trigger of the sig, which actually was the worst of the four i've had. The 1991 triggers are extremely crisp and light compared to the sigs, which was mushy and heavy.

When I went looking for a 1911 about 9 or 10 years ago, I had an open mind and a somewhat open wallet. Wanted to keep things under $1K if possible and was mainly thinking about something primarily for range use and load development. Checked out the Remington R1, SA M1911A1, and I think the Ruger SR1911 and then the shop owner, who also built custom 1911s, showed me the latest guns from Colt. There was a Series 70, a stainless Government, a blued Government, and a Lightweight Model.

Now he's been in the business for quite awhile and he told me these were some of the best built Colts he had seen in a very long time. He then field stripped one of them and showed me how close the tolerances were on this gun, especially with the barrel to slide and the slide to frame fit. I really liked the blued Government Model but I also liked the way the Lightweight Government felt and balanced. The fact that it was also lighter than a steel framed model meant that it would be more comfortable to carry if I chose it for CCW. So I bought the Lightweight Model that day and came back the next week and bought the blued Government Model as well!

A few months later I picked up a Colt Commander in .38 Super. Just as well built in terms of fit and finish than the two Government Models. Now I realize that all of this is purely anecdotal but all three Colts are still doing just fine, and while I wouldn't say all Colts are this nice, I just know that my three were built right!

Colt's are nice guns when you get them working, I'm 0 for 2 on recent purchases. My new Competition 9mm is about to go back for the second time for brass to head (is it really that hard for them to fix this?), oh, and the FO front sight fell out. A Gold Cup I bought a few years ago also went back a few times and still wasn't reliable. I was complaining on the Colt forum about it and a member offered to fix it, I sent it to him and he did in 15 minutes.
