I'm wondering what my options are for a next SBR that isn't an AR platform. I would LOVE to SBR an FN PS90, especially since I have a suppressor for it also. But at $1200 for the gun, $200 for the barrel shortening, and $200 for the tax stamp, that's $1600 in the gun not to mention the ammo is $0.40/round. So that's $20/mag to shoot it. That's a lot of cool factor, but too rich for my blood.

Are there any other options that are more reasonably priced? Say in 223, 7.62x39, 9mm, or 45?

I was looking at the cz scorpion till I found a deal on a boring old AR that I didn't want to pass up. If you like collecting, how about a hi-power or mauser with buttstock? Or you could go the ak route with one of the krink-style pistols. These are just my fantasies but maybe it will give you some ideas.

I SBR'd a CX4 Storm in 9mm and a Rossi ranch hand in 44mag.

Both are lots of fun and different from an AR.

I didn't think the CX4 could be SBRd due to 922r.
It can, its just the threading that makes it out of 922r compliance. But if you get the trigger housing group from sierra papa it makes it 922r compliant since the whole trigger housing is stamped "made in USA", at least that is what I have been lead to believe.

My first SBR was an AR. My second was a 10/22. With a short enough barrel it makes ever cheap high velocity ammo subsonic, making it a great platform for a silencer.

I have been thinking about doing a ruger charger. There is a nice stainless one for sale at my LGS for 250, add the 200 tax stamp, 15 for engraving, and 90ish for a boyds 10/22 stock and you've got a pretty nice sbr for less the 600.

The SP trigger is a great idea even if you're not SBRing it. The CX4 has a miserable trigger, or at least mine does. First time I took it to the range I thought I forgot to disengage the trigger! Even now after many rounds it's better but still not very good. It doesn't prevent getting good hits but I think I'll do the SP upgrade just for better accuracy and more enjoyable plinking.

They're not as cheap as they used to be, but I always thought it would be fun to chop the barrel on a Mosin Nagant. When they were $89, that would have been about as cheap as you could make an SBR. $89 for the rifle, $200 for the stamp, and use the hacksaw you've got in your garage to chop it. (And if you are really worried about the crown on the barrel, use some valve grinding compound and a round-head bolt chucked in a drill to recrown.)

Thing is, I don't really have a whole lot of use for a SBR'd Mosin, so I just haven't done it yet.

Or just buy a 10/22 (which already comes with a stock) and pay one of the guys on eBay $60 to cut and thread your barrel. That saves you a couple hundred bucks.

You're not alone there.

Lot of AK options, I went AMD65.

Then there are several kit builds, PPS43 in 9mm comes to mind. Also UZI's, CZ's, H&K, Soumi, the list goes on and on.

What are you wanting to do with it?

Mostly just have fun with it. No particular purpose.

The MP5 clones are awesome, but pricey also.

What about the new Century Arms C39 Micro? Looks similar to a mini draco except made in the US so that solves the 922r issue. Has anyone ever SBRd the new C39 Micro?

I bought one of the Magal stocks from Blackthorne, sent off the trust paperwork and check to the ATF, and started collecting Galil bits. I'm building it as a 9mm blowback with PPSh41 magazines. The Form 1 came back a year ago, but I haven't had time to actually build the stupid thing yet...

Ok, now I think I might have changed my mind on the AR platform. I found the Quarter Circle 10 dedicated 9mm lower. All the 9mm ARs I've seen look goofy with the stick mag sticking out of the 556 size magwell. Just looks like a throw-together afterthought. The QC10 lower looks great and looks like it was made for the mag. Plus it uses Glock mags which would work awesome with my glock "system". Not to mention 9mm is very cheap for me to reload and shoot.

It looks like this will still end up being an exoensive little build though. Seems like all the "cool" stuff costs more.

I've a lot of fun with my Mini Draco SBR 7.62x39 is pretty easy to find <$0.25 per round. I'm thinking of doing the same with a Zastave PAP M85NP 5.56 pistol that takes AR mags.

If you reload this definitely is the way to go, but it took a lot of futzing around to make the BHO work on my QC10 lower, but its been great once I got it tweaked. If you don't reload 9mm runs about $0.20 per shot at its cheapest.

I'm reloading 9mm for $0.10/round. Actually cheaper than that currently as I was given 2lbs of powder for free.
