Was thinking, is there a non toxic gun lube out there? I carry my side arm on my hip with no holster. And the clp seeps out of the gun onto my skin. That cant be very healthy. Is there any non toxic lube? I dont need alot of lube in my gun. Before i go shooting with it. I break it and and oil it up. Was thinking veggie oil. Just some kind of protectent

Sounds like you're way too much CLP if its dripping on your skin. No matter what you may think your gun would be more secure in a holster that will also serve to protect it. Use less CLP and a holster and your problem will be solved.

Dillon Precision sells an oil that they call "Snake Oil". It's non-toxic and was supposed to be originally created for use in medical equipment. In addition to being non-toxic, and having no smell, it's also a very good lubricant in my experience. I haven't done any testing to see if it protects against corrosion as well as the good gun-specific products do.

Lubriplate makes several food grade (non-toxic) lubricants but generally sells them in "industrial" sizes. Lubrikit (a separate company) sells kits with manageable sized bottles of Lubriplate oil and tubes of Lubriplate grease. These products have no smell and are supposed to provide excellent corrosion protection since they are designed for use in food processing equipment which can be in constant contact with salt and various acids.

One of the best non-toxic gun cleaners out there is prolix. It has a very mild citrus smell and is also safe for most materials including woods and plastics. It is completely safe to breath and, they claim, to ingest... I don't plan on testing that one out.

I stopped using it purely because of the cost. I still keep a bottle around for cleaning dies or other things that I don't want oil residue on.

Froglube. It's completely non-toxic; you could eat it if you wanted to. More importantly, it's a terrific CLP. The paste is less messy than most lubes and it stays on longer because it's a solid at room temperature. So not only is it non-toxic, but it won't seep out of your gun so you probably won't get any on you anyway.

Just picked up some Rand CLP, I bought it because its thicker than other clp's I have used, but it says non toxic and Eco friendly on the bottle as well. It uses a vegetable oil base.
It might work for you, I don't have any real experience with it yet, but it stays put and doesn't dry out. If you are worried about it running off of your gun and making contact with your skin, this could be the solution.

Non toxic CLPs/cleaners....

I'd look at; Slip2000, Frog Lube, Ballistol, Rand CLP.
Ballistol is non toxic, CFC free & safe to use with bare hands.
Rand CLP is endorsed/suggested by retired special ops soldier Larry Vickers.
They claim it is made with a vegetable oil base.
See; www.SEAL1.net & www.italiangungrease.com . They are new & may meet your needs.

PS: why no holster? I would highly suggest buying a well made holster, belt & magazine holder. :D

T/C claims their "Natural lube 1000 plus Bore Butter" is made up entirely of food grade ingredients.

It is pitched to black powder shooters and is pretty much a scam (IMO) but it will work just as well on a cartridge gun and comes in an oversized toothpaste tube complete with minty scent, which makes it definitely worth the price premium over straight crisco.

OK, enough sarcasm. If you are carrying against bare skin I would suggest stainless, hard chrome, or one of the paint finishes (durakote, cerakote, or whatever) and not overlubing.

I missed that part when I first responded. Why would you not use a holster? A holster is far safer, retains the gun much better, and is usually more comfortable.

Crisco® Brand Vegetable Shortening (all right reserved) makes an excellent lubricant for all kinds of things!

With Crisco® Brand Vegetable Shortening, all your wildest dreams will come true.

Lol! But really, don't knock it till ya try it! A lot of black powder shooters use it for their revolvers.

Not OP, but...

This isn't mine but is similar to my primary carry gun:

Mine has smooth (uncheckered) thin cocobolo scales and is stainless, but is otherwise about the same.

I have several good holsters for it, and use them when appropriate, but the clip you see is not a decoration. It retains the gun as well as standard IWB holsters and is safe, comfortable, and makes it easy to hide a full size 1911.

100% Jojoba oil from cosmetics department. Local Whole Foods Market carries it.

One thing to keep in mind about food and cosmetic greases is that while they do indeed lubricate, they are not anywhere near as good at preventing metal-to-metal wear. That's because most good oils and greases contain anti-wear additives such as ZDDP to prevent metal wear and galling, whereas food and cosmetic greases do not.

I agree that CLP is not the best handgun lube out there, and if a gun is going to be against your skin, a thicker lubricant that won't run is a good idea. Lots of good options have been mentioned already, and I'll mention Tetra Lube (a thin gun grease) as another option.

Benezra, im not worried about metal to metal wear when im packing. I dont shoot that pistol or rack the slide over and over again. I only slide it back for a brass check, and on the hip it goes. Im looking for more a anti rust from moisture from my body.

Grizz, i only put drops on the lube points. And it still spreads pretty good.

TheOhazard, i prefere not to carry a holster. I wear a tight belt and it usally never goes anywhere. While hiking, boating, four wheeling and snow mobling.
