Actually, the military looks incompetent. Base security was lacking.

I can count how many times on one hand the number of bases I have entered with a military guard. Most of the time they are police officers or contracted security guards. Under the lower Force Protection levels (FPCON A and B) all they do is check IDs. Bases don't have the tools or cordon areas to do vehicle searches. And they should. This is not a failing of the military to protect ourselves, just the ones who pull the purse strings. Every member of the military could be armed at all times on duty, if the money was there for firearms/ammo/training. But it isn't.

Many people I worked with in the military ignore the DOD policy of no firearms. I have worked in recruiting offices and I have worked on large active duty posts. Only the stupid ones ignore the lessons taught since the first Ft Hood shooting. And with the Chattanooga shootings, there will be fewer and fewer following the DOD policy I bet.

Two things,

First, the guy with the ND is getting crushed, and rightfully so. However, he should get some credit for following the single most important role of firearms safety...don't point it at anyone. Probably saved a life in this circumstance.

He didn't save a life. His idiocy and incompetence put lives in danger. The fact that he managed to NOT shoot someone with his ND does not give him credit for Jack.

Second, there seems to be some support for arming military members. There is a long standing tradition in this country that dictates the military is not armed on US soil in peace time. Its symbolic of the founding fathers wish that the government not be a threat to the people. I trust and honor the men and women who serve, but im not prepared to see armed soldiers on the street corners. Thoughts?

My thoughts are this. If a citizen of the United States of America happens to serve in the military, should they be stripped of their 2A rights? No. I'm not advocating for the military to arm every single service man, woman and tranny in uniform. I'm not saying they should be given law enforcement powers. What I'm saying is that if, by their own choosing, they wish to carry a personal weapon for personal defense, they should be allowed to. Service menbers stationed at Fort Custer near where I live should still be required to qualify for a CPL as per state law, and carry as per state law. Laws that restrict carry of fire arms on federal property need to be rescinded so as not to hinder lawful carry of firearms.

As far as the combat arms MOS carrying government issued weapons... I actually support their doing so, on base. Off base, they are regular joe jag off citizen, and have no need to carry a government issued firearm, but I'm perfectly fine with them carrying personal firearms.

I'm ok with allowing American citizens to arm themselves.

Maybe "credit" is a bad way to describe what I'm trying to say.

Guns malfunction and ND's occur. Usually its operator error, sometimes it isnt. A firing pin stuck or frozen in the forward position could easily cause an ND. Im just thankful this guy was following the most effective rule of firearm safety.

Imagine how much worse this would have been for gun owners if he had killed someone.
