NUMBERS: AK vs AR. How many do you own?

One AR, a Colt HBAR upper on an S&W lower.

No AKs. I did briefly have a pre-owned Tantal AK74 side-folder on hold at a local dealer, with the idea of using it as a Jeep rifle. If it sits at the dealer long enough, I may relent and get it after all.

I don't understand collecting, so I don't have a "list." I do tend to accumulate certain firearms, but not ARs or AKs. They are just tools, in my mind.

I own 12AKs to 6AR's. Mine are in my Museum like collection. Displayed , tagged, and listed.

Lets see here

Off the top of my head I can think of 11 AK variants including

2 Romanian underfolders
2 AMD 65 side folders
2 Norincos
1 AK 74
3 Romanian kit built guns
1 Saiga 12

Currently I also have 16 AR variants
Plus I also have 5 AK kits that I havent started on yet. I didn't count these since I have yet to
get the recievers for them.

1 22 Beltfed upper AR15
1 50 BMG upper AR15
2 5.45 upper AR15s
5 5.56 upper AR15a
5 stripped lowers that I haven't decided how to build yet
2 AR 10 308

More than I need, of both, but not as many as I want...

Gotta say though, based on the lower-trending numbers the majority have admitted to here, people sure do have a lot of strong opinions on these arms which I will take with even more of a grain of salt in the future. And it dawned on me, one guy owning seven AK's probably invested little more than someone with one special top-of-the-line AR.

Looking at AK-74 and DPMS in 7.62 nato

AR-15 out shoots 'em all:what:

3.5 ARs. One in 5.56, one in 9mm, one in .22lr. Also have an AR45 lower, I lack an upper to put on it.

One AK. A converted Saiga.

1 M&P15
1 Spike's lower, waiting on Form 1 to put an 11.5" upper on but otherwise complete
1 stripped Stag lower, no other parts

1 SAR-1
1 completed Romanian G build on an ArmoryUSA receiver
1 ArmoryUSA receiver with G kit waiting to be built

And since some people have been dragging other guns into it:
1 Yugo SKS
1 Sig 556 (hey, it's sort of a hybrid)

ROUGH COUNT SO FAR: Running about even, by responses given. No clear winner. It is interesting to note that the semi AR-15 came on the scene in the early 60's, but was sold and made only by Colt, and they were filling military contracts, so no great production, or demand for maybe the first 10 years. As other manufacturers started to offer AR guns, and they became accepted and popular, sales went ballistic (pun intended). Then, the ever present interest in the AK got whetted by the Valmet, early Maadi, and then the Chinese AK's came. At the fall of the iron curtain, gun importers were jumping on the former Eastern Bloc countries and Yugo, Bulgarian, Romanian, and other kits and guns came in, at prices way below AR's. In a relatively short decade, a LOT of AK's got purchased by guys who couldn't or wouldn't pay for AR's, or simply wanted to have what hadn't been available for a long time, a tough fighting rifle for a budget price. I don't know if the AK has reached or passed the numbers of AR's in the hands of US civilians, but the AK certainly has reached SOME respectable number. Keep the count going!
