NYPD "How to spot a hidden handgun"

How do we know most bad guys don't use holsters?

Experience, supported by the experience of many others.

Do you doubt this?

But to be the most accurate I would say "many" do not. I don't think I would say "most" do not, even though I would wager that it is most, if I had to make a pick.

I've shot every day since my shoulder started acting up. I can't raise my arm far above shoulder-level ... Should practice weak side more in case this gets much worse.

Glucosomine chondrotin with msm is your friend and regular exercise that works your rotator cuff.

It looks like a way to manufacture the "articulable" part of Reasonable Suspicion Based Upon Specific and Articulable Facts. (cops stops you on just a hunch, and if he finds something juicy he makes up a good story and points to the poster.

He doesn't even have to find a gun, he might find drugs or something while searching for the imaginary gun, or he can get you for "resisting arrest" or "assaulting a police officer".

What the heck are you talking about?

Haha, I was at a bluegrass concert this weekend. It was fun playing "spot the ccw" with my buddy. We counted 16 among a crowd of two hundred that we considered "probable." The single biggest indicator we saw was outright printing. I'm sure we had a fair share of both false positives and probably several that completely escaped our notice.

I hate being old enough that I write down tips like this.

Surely you've seen this video by now: http://boingboing.net/2012/10/23/nypd-officers-beat-homeless-ma.html The sad thing is it's not an isolated incident. Happens all the time.

Maybe I got a /little/ carried away with that. What do you think about the manufacturing RAS part? You didn't quote that.

Get some fish oil while you're at it. ;)

Check the EPA and DHA content. If it isn't listed you don't want it. Take enough to get at least 2g of EPA/DHA per day.

I carried at a Better than Ezra concert about 10 people deep into the crowd Friday night. Nobody had a clue I had a gun. Not the cops all around, not the people jumping around me, not when I had to get the guy off my wife who was trying to take the free t shirts that landed in her hands. I was wearing jeans and an untucked button up shirt, but I regularly wear the set up with a Tshirt without problems.

The key, A quality holster and quality belt. The gun didn't budge the 7 hours we were out there.

BTW I was carrying a 3914 @ 4 o'clock in a holster I made myself on a belt I made with an extra mag in my left pocket, Kershaw blur in the right along with a Fenix LD10.

My Daily carry is an M&P pro, but I broke out the smaller gun for the concert, it doesn't budge at all, I carry it in a pancake OWB under a T shirt, again, I made it myself so I have it ride a little high with an FBI can't at around 4, sometimes @ 2 if I am about to shoot a match and I have been practicing with a competition rig. I would have more problems with my cardiovascular system failing before I would have to worry about my gun shifting.

I am curious when people say this...

...how do you know that?

Well, by BIL was shocked when I took it off in the car on the way home. He knew I was carrying that day but thought I left the gun at the house, what I was doing was switching from a pro the 3914.

I was really testing the holster, or I would have been carrying another gun.

There is a high probability of being reported if you are spotted with a hand gun at a rock concert IMO. I imagine if someone saw, they would have reported it to the cops. I was perfectly legal, but I guarantee if you asked 99 out of 100 people if it was legal to have a gun they would have said no. Sure, maybe someone noticed, but I don't think anyone did and it did not effect my night.

This is an old poster and today under ADA the POPO could get sued real quick for following these ideas.

Wouldn't count on it. Google "stop and frisk". NYC and the NYPD have trashed the 2nd amendment and you think the 4th still applies? That's funny.

A fellow at our range was once an NYPD cop. I heard him talk about hanging around gunshows (in civies) watching for guys buying handgun accessories, ammo, etc. They would follow them out of of the show and find a reason to pull them over and search the vehicle. He is not on my Christmas card list.

I didn't know we had gun shows in NYC. But then I wouldn't be surprised about them wandering out of their jurisdiction.

I gardened every day this spring and in to mid summer. I went fishing almost every weekend this summer, 2 mile round trip walk from the parking lot to my "spot" and back. Didn't have any problems with my joints until the cold weather started in and I got sedentary. Combination of both doing it. Been in more than my share of motorcycle crashes doing superbike racing - including three not so great hospital trips - fall and winter weather is hard on me. :)

The things on the poster--the "tells" of a concealed handgun--are so obvious that it makes wonder what the NYPD thinks of the intelligence level of its officers.

Or maybe they're only obvious to those who carry and are conscious of them. As someone else said, there are many things people carry that make them alter their posture, constantly verify the thing's status, etc.

Ultimately, using a set of "tells" to spot what a LEO is taught might be a gun seems awfully close to profiling. I thought the anti-gun types were pretty much also opposed to that, but maybe I'm wrong.

I have post-traumatic osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, and degenerative joint disease. Some related to construction work and injuries, some of it hereditary/genetic.

Worst thing you can do is sit on your butt. Best thing you can do is work out regularly and take the correct supplements. Move it or lose it.

I'm 53 years old, in the best shape of my life and do 12 hour days on the job site. The only time I feel horrible is when I sit still for a couple of hours and then try to get moving again.

Drink milk, take the proper supplements, stay real active, work your joints in a controlled manner doing light free weights, and don't be fat.

I hear ya on the cold weather and joint pain - thank god the gym has a steam room and a jacuzzi!

How do we know most bad guys don't use holsters?

#1 - 'Cause I know quite a few current and former LEO's.
#2 - 'Cause I used to know a couple of not so smart BG's.

Now with that said, the smart BG's ones do use holsters. Fortunately, most BG's are not the brightest.

I'm guessing it's more likely that stupid criminals are caught more often than smart ones who use a holster.

I also think it's kinda silly to assume your adversary is not bright...

How many New York City residents do you expect to have experience with carrying concealed handguns?

Profiling? lolno
