Only 10mm and .45acp will be considered.
I currently carry a Taurus PT1911 full sized as my EDC and its large and heavy.
I want lighter, Smaller and more concealable and have a mid range price of $600 max.
The only 3" 1911 ive liked is the Kimber CDP2 and its way too much $$$.
Id like to stay away from Taurus, For no particular reason except i already owned a PT145 and it had no character.
Id guess polymer would be my best bet for weight, but if the size is right and its a light alloy ill consider it.

Ive owned a G20 in the past and it fully impressed me with Glock and the 10mm round. I still like big and slow like the .45acp, But mid sized and screaming is good also (10mm).

When i started my ccw endeavor i bought 5 handguns and carried each to see what i liked and what carried best for me. The 1911 won me over.
I also carried 9mm and shot .40 in my converted G20. I dont want them in my carry gun. So pls don't suggest them.

So far im looking at the G29 and the Kahr PM45.
Im not sure if S&W makes an M&P that small or the SA XD sub compact.

Suggest what you want as long as its light, small and under $600 and in .45 or 10mm.
I prefer no lower priced guns like Taurus or Bersa, sorry.

Ive finally gotten past my "no safety" scares me issue when i owned my PPS9 and carried it in my back pocket with a leather outer cover i made for it. And the P238 i carried back there and sat on all day long clock and locked.

I dont think thickness can be avoided with a a .45 or 10mm, But the lighter weight and smaller overall size will make a big difference.
10mm ammo is available locally for practice at $30 for 50 or i can just order double tap as thats what ill carry anyhow.
.45 isnt much cheaper anymore, But i can always shoot my 1911 is i get the urge for high caliber shooting. But ill still practice a bit will full load 10mm loads.

A RIA/Citadel/Legacy compact 1911 would give you the exact same manual of arms and share ammo, it works for me when I want to carry steel instead of polymer.

Springfield makes the XD in a .45 model

A good holster and belt would make that Gov-size 1911 concealable in pants with belt loops and an untucked shirt, an Officer's-size is even easier.

S&W 457 or 4516. (These will have to be used.) The 457 is lighter, having an aluminum alloy frame, than the all stainless steel 4516, but even the 4516 is lighter than a full size 1911.

I have a good belt and a good handmade holster i made myself to fit my own needs.
I carry my 5" 1911 with just an untucked tshirt all the time, But that gets cumbersome with weight and i have to always pull my pants up.

The RIA/Citadel/Legacy compact 1911 is a consideration as ive even seen them locally. But weight is still high on those. I also have a big concern of reliability with lower end 3" 1911's.

Ill look those Smiths up, Isnt one the Chiefs special? i know id carry one of those if i could find one. Great little gun.
Ill keep an eye out for those, The 457 looks like the better of the 2.

Im heading to SA now to check out there offerings.

"Edit" After a Google search i found out Sig released the 250 subcompact .45acp
Does anyone have any feedback on this gun? Ive only owned 1 other sig which i was highley impressed with which was the P238.

So what belt is it? Because I have a hanger full of "almost gunbelts" in the closet, all of them are inferior to the BeltMan product in looks and quality as well as being suitable for a gunbelt.

I also have a big concern of reliability with lower end 3" 1911's.
My Citadel runs like a top with Wilson mags, other than magazines and grips it is factory un-modified. I tried to induce a "limp-wrist" malfunction and failed, with factrory mags the top round will "nose-dive" into the mag/grip when hand-cycled and I got some teething issues with ejection that have vanished after ~300 rounds down the pipe.
It has liked everything I fed it with except WWB personal protection and Gold Dots in the short barrel loading (it likes normal GDHP just fine, and feeds Hornady and Win premium fine as well)

Now ... the XD .45 is designed from the ground up to be a smaller .45acp gun, while a compact 1911 is a miniature of the gov-size model and may not be as reliable as an original design in some cases. Of course, the "original design" everyone remembers is a government-issued "Colt .45" that was probably so broken in by previous users that every bearing surface was lapped by wear and tolerances were looser than a modern commercial gun as well. Bottom line, every commercial gun is unreliable until proven otherwise, grandpa's old war pistol's record has little to do even with a modern "milspec" gun, and even less to do with a Taurus 1911-pattern pistol using different parts in some places.

Some people report problems with shorter 1911-pattern pistols, but they can be solved with maintenance and ammo selection in most cases, even though complaining remains on the 'net forever due to the inherently archival nature of forums and online reviews.

Here's another thought, a compact 1911 would fit the holsters you already have, now wouldn't it?

That is a different model, the CS45. It has a shorter slide but fatter grips (Hogue rubber vs. Xenoy plastic).

There are also the Glock 30 and 36. Both are light, but the 30 is quite thick. The 36 is slimmer but has marginal ammo capacity. They are good shooters, though.

My belt is an Amish made heavy duty belt. My issue is my growing gut and receding backside make pants not want to stay up for long. I carry my PT1911 just fine and have the same issues if i wasn't carrying my weapon.
Until i give up all hope of ever getting a lady friend again ill hold off on the suspenders i most likley need. Need anymore info on why my pants wont stay up?

I have no issues with the G30, But the G36 has had a checkered past.
But in all honesty if i go Glock i like the 10mm option.

I just have to ask...
Why only those two calibers?

They make guns in other calibers? lol
It doesn't matter why i like those 2 calibers now does it? Its what i like and what i carry.

Mabey ill just be better off deciding this on my own.

I believe the Kahr is what you are looking for. It is smaller than the Glock, although the G36 is pretty nice, and slightly smaller than the G29 or G30.

My belt is an Amish made heavy duty belt.
I have one of those!
... 1.5", thick black leather, really deep dye, nice roller buckle? Stamped behind the buckle fold with "AMISH MADE IN USA HAND CRAFTED", right?
It actually gets worn ... at work where the heaviest thing on my belt is a radio, some keys, or a valve wrench. Now that I think of it, that's where my EDC belt's roller buckle came from, the nice pretty buckle from the BeltMan belt ended up on the Amish work belt.

I'm probably in the same boat as you with pants fit, I finally admitted that my waist was narrower than my gut and started wearing the belt at the narrowest part of the body, it helped a lot.

forget about 10mm, not as accurate, nasty recoil, expensive to shoot and hard to find. Glock 30- 45 acp best carry gun made, IMO.

The belt is nice and about as sturdy as i could imagine one being that didnt have inserts in it. Your right about how i wear my pants, Up on my belly button like i did when i was 20.
I should wear it under my belly but i wont admit im getting older and fatter.
Im 6'4" and 270lbs so im not a blob, But i need a nice sized car if i wanna drive in comfort anyhow.

I dont think many people here can carry a full sized 1911 as and EDC like i do, But sometimes i know when i need a smaller gun to match the weather and my clothes. Id like to meet the man who carries one IWB as an EDC in Florida year round and id buy that REAL man a drink.
Id pick up a smaller 1911 if i felt i could get my needs filled at $600 for a 3" one but i don't.

Of course i don't want another mouse gun, I had 2-3 of them and i didn't like the idea of it being my only weapon.

springwalk- You may have a point. The 10mm does have its drawbacks. And sticking with one caliber may be alot better when it comes to practicing and ammo.

List:
PM45
G30/36 As i will have to look into the G36 yet.
Sig 250 SC .45

I think the PM45 will hold the lead on size but carry the highest price.
The Glock leads the reliability and after market options areas.
Sig is rather unknown other than its gonna be expensive and could be questionable in many areas.

You can find many of them posting on M1911.org.

Dress around the gun. Most of the recommendations involve a large loose fitting shirt (think something like an Hawaiian shirt). A Forward Body Incline (FBI) cant holster also helps by making the grip more vertical.

This.

Glock 29.
G29-5.jpg

Compact and concealable. Hard to do better than 10+1 rounds of no B.S. 10mm firepower.

I added Trijicons, and Pearce "pinky finger" extensions replaced the mag floorplates. Rides daily in a SideArmor IWB.

Good to go.

Because, obviously, the gentleman from Ohio is a manly-man with outstanding taste, who prefers to distinguish himself from the herd of cartridge lemmings for whom the typical default choice is ...

... some form of swishy 9-minimeter.

;)

LOL ...... I don't consider myself small at 6' 2" - 185lb and and still physically fit and athletic for 42......Now this gentleman at 6' 4" - 270lb ought to be able to brandish a Jennings J-22 and scare off the 1 in a million perps. stupid enough to try an assault on such a large man

He's probably more likely to be struck by lighting twice than ever need his concealed .45 or 10mm...... LOL

One gun I carry in an IWB tuckable High Noon holster is S&W 4513TSW this model is discontinued but is very similar to the current S&W 457. Works good for me with a tucked t-shirt even on a motorcycle. Jim.

Ya had to go and show me the G29 didn't ya? Ill still keep it in mind as well as the 30/36.
I do dress around my gun, And even go as far as multiple holsters. But some days a guy just needs a smaller and lighter option.

agtman- Ive always been a .45acp fan from an early age since my dad who was a local business owner and had legal abilities to carry concealed weapons and his choice was always a 1911 and that was mainly due to his sharpshooting awards and abilities in the Navy during Vietnam. Luckily he was stationed just off shore on a oil tanker.

I myself stumbled upon the 10mm myself and it earned my respect on its own. Im not asking people to understand or want to get into a caliber argument that rages on every gun forum daily. I just know what i want and prefer and would like to leave it at that.

And your right i do scare most people away with my size, But the one who isnt scared is gonna be carrying a gun to level the playing field and i feel i have a higher chance to be targeted with a gun rather than just fists. Im about to turn 40 with arthritis in my knees and ankles and most likley would be out of breath if i had to fight for my life past 1 minute. So i avoid any confrontation.

Unfortunately im not prepared to buy a gun today as a well priced CDPII would be exactly the perfect gun for me. This purchase will require a layaway plan at a local shop im sure.

I think we have Glocks covered and well represented.
Anyone wanna speak up for the Kahr pm45 or the Sig 250 SC .45?

I really do think polymer will win on this one. Altho i like the older Smiths especially the CS45 which is almost impossible to find locally. They may be a bit larger and heavier than what i want.

I'll second the G29 in 10mm, if you get the short frame version. (G29SF)

Ohio is an open carry state too, so much less drama if it is exposed or not perfectly hidden, or better yet, not hidden at all.
