If I lived in a state that had open carry, I think it would be awesome to see people's reactions when you walk by them with a nice shiny DEagle strapped to your side.. or maybe a Mac-10.

:what::eek::cuss: <--them

:)<--me

Yeah, I think that would be great too.....and some times..... I like to pretend I'm a space cowboy!

That kind of nonsense should be the furthest thing from your mind when responsibly carrying a firearm.

personally, i think it'd be better if they had NO reaction when I walked by...that would put the biggest smile on my face

Don't they call that gunboat diplomacy?

I take it that you don't try to negotiate too many deals.

You know, I open carry a lot and I never get any reaction at all. That's probably because I'm not strutting around with my chest all puffed out trying to make an anti "pee their pants."

I guess you'd be pretty disapointed wouldn't you?

...yeah, a MP7 in a chest rig
plus a dozen 40shot mags.

That would definitely impress the public :)

hmm. a "shiny deagle" or "mac-10" and a desire to impress people and them wetting their pants.

Are you sure you're mature enough to actually be trusted with a firearm?

It happens here all the time. Most people here in Las Vegas do a bit of a double take and then simply go about their business. I have seen people stopped by police before but after checking the registration card (a requirement that exists ONLY in Clark County) they give the gun back and thats that.

Businesses here also have the final say on whether or not someone may be armed on the premises which is as it should be.

In northern Nevada, I've observed open carry to be more common and noticed even less by the populace. I love this state of mine.

Most don't seem to care here in northern Virginia including the county sheriff and deputies. OC is mandatory in restaurants that serve alcohol thanks to Gov. Kaine.

I open carry a lot (most places except work). I don't do it to impress anyone. I also am not looking for an anti to pee themselves.

The first thing you notice is most people have no situational awareness. 90%+ of people never see it. Among those that do and ask a question; if they are genuinely interested I use it as an opportunity to explain their rights in VA.

It usually goes something like this:
THEM: Are you a cop?
ME: No. In VA it is YOUR right to carry a weapon anywhere not prohibited by law.
THEM: Really? Do you need a permit or something?
ME: No permit is needed to purchase, own, or open carry. If you want to carry it concealed you need a CHP. Nice thing is VA is a shall issue state which means unless you are in a prohibited group the state MUST give you a CHP.
THEM: [something about wanting to own a gun/how they heard/knew somebody who got robbed/what kind of gun is that/etc]

I agree with others is you are looking forward to a confrontation then you shouldn't be open carrying and I wonder if you have the maturity to even own a firearm.

I've open carried from time to time as the situation dictates it. Mostly, it is when I am doing something on our land, or if I am headed out to do something like that.

But I really don't carry openly for the sake of carrying openly as in I don't walk down Main Street with a handgun on my belt. That's just me.

I say the above to tell this....

During Katrina, most people open carried in the rural areas. I had a Glock 19 in a belt holster.

One of my father's neighbors is a transplant into the neighborhood. He also is a the only rabidly anti-gun person around here.

One day that I was bringing supplies to my father, he asked me to bring a couple things up the road to this neighbor. Sure. I did.

I get out of my jeep and tell Don what I've brought to him, and I get it out of my jeep. Afterwards, he and I are talking a few minutes before I leave. (Don is ant-gun, but he is intelligent enough to know that it IS a right and let's it go as a part of living around such folk.)

While I am talking to Don, his son who is a merchant-marine looks down at my Glock. This son really doesn't know me or anything about me. He asks me "Are you a cop?"

I tell him "No." He gets a confused look on his face, and I ask him why he asked.

He says "Your carrying a gun. How can you carry a gun if you aren't a cop?"

I laugh and tell him that it is a Constitutional right and is a right in much of the US. He told me that he had no idea that people were allowed to carry a gun! This guy lives in Mississippi and grew up in Louisana. But he grew up in the home of a person that is anti-gun. It is no wonder that he has no concept of the 2nd Amendment.

And we wonder how each generation is less and less aware of our Consitituional rights.

  1. The vast majority of people don't notice when I carry openly.
  2. Big guns tend to be really, really, really hard on my lumbar vertebrae.

Yeah, this is a GREAT way to show anti-gunners and fence sitters that we as a community are being serious. :fire::cuss:
I admire your spirit, but I think you are misguided here. We, as a community, need to present a united front and show that we aren't trying to intimidate, harass, etc. those that don't believe in the right to keep and bear arms. Otherwise, those fence-sitters go to the anti camp, and all of a sudden we see more and more restrictive legislation being introduced.

Seriously, if you do open carry, do so with an attitude of seriousness and don't treat your firearm as a fashion accessory, as it's a tool. Nothing more, nothing less.

Sigh.

Remember that thread, just a few days ago, where folks damn near accused me of being a North Korean because I don't like folks mixing attitude and open carry?

Dude, it's a public relations war, more than anything else. Please don't bleep up all the work that people have done over the past 15-20 years, okay?

Seriously find another way to show off (bling-bling rims on your car or something) because people who act like that are part of the reason the anti-rights crowd got so far in the first place.

Without intending to hijack the thread, I do not open carry, even though it's a protected right in Pennsylvania. What I wonder is, if any business can deny you entrance with your gun on your hip, just where are you going that open carry makes any sense? Do you just walk around town, without going into any buildings? Do you carry until you're told to leave, and, then ...what? Go outside, and stand around? If I go, for instance, to a movie theater, and I'm asked to leave because of my openly carried firearm, do I leave the gun in the car, and go see the movie, or do I just hand the tickets to the next couple in line, and put up with a pissed-off woman the rest of the weekend? If those are the options (disarmed or doghouse), why would you open carry, as opposed to concealed carry? Is it just to prove the point? It's the same thing when going to a restaurant, or any retail store; I'm going to that place for a reason. If I'm denied entrance, I either have to disarm (which denies the purpose for carrying, in the first place), or I have to do without whatever it was I came to get (which is hardly a viable option, either).

I understand that the odds are about even that nobody will even notice, and I'll be totally ignored, but, even odds means that about half the time I run the risk that I'll be either disarmed, or doing without, which never happens when I carry concealed.

So, I'm not sure I understand the purpose of open carry, unless those who do open carry have time to just walk around town, without stopping to do any business, which is something I just don't seem to be able to find a place for in my schedule.

I've got to agree with Bogie here.

Our focus should be on education and getting popular acceptance. The attitude of "I want to carry a gun to freak people out, and if a revolver is too tame then I'll take a subgun and leave the laser sight on" is not helping the cause at all.

Our biggest hurdle is the irrational fear many people have toward firearms. We should be trying to eliminate it, not provoke it.

You know, most of the time one would expect this

onoz_omg2.gif

but in reality, when people find out that I am a "gunner" they want me to tell them what you need to do to get a gun and what would I recommend.

Many folks think that you have to jump though a billion hoops to get a gun, and thus never get one to protect themselves. The other day a social worker found out that I liked guns and then started asking me about how to get a lighter gun, as she has a large revolver to protect herself from mountain cats when she walks.

If OC was more acceptable in NC (NC has weird OC laws) I would strap on my Nagant and OC a lot.

I had the same thought.

Most people don't notice it as far as I can tell, although I do get comments from time to time. The vast majority are positive, with a few neutral, none negative - well, except for the sheriff and his deputy the other day, but that is a different story.

Last Thursday I met my parents at a local restaurant for a late breakfast. I was OCing. After the meal, I went on ahead to our house to let the dogs out before they got there. When they arrived, my Dad was laughing. He said the guy behind me was staring at my gun so hard his eyes looked like they were going to pop out of his head. After I left, and as I was walking along the outside (we were all seated along the windows) he continued to stare. After I was safely out of sight, his wife asked him, "Was it what you thought it was!?!" I guess they didn't notice Mom and Dad sitting there with me the entire time.

But most people don't really notice or care, and that is the way it should be. For the folks I just described, they got to see a normal person doing normal things with a gun on his hip - one more step in the desensitization of Americans towards legal gun ownership. I now await the arrival of the blissninnies. :neener:
