Well, consider that the Beretta 92 FS was considered to be a good choice for general use by our military as the M9.
Then consider that the US Navy SEALs had freedom of choice to select any pistol they wanted to use and went with the SIG/Sauer P-226. All things considered with reliability and accuracy being paramount, the 226 is about as good as it gets for 9mm combat pistols.
