pay $100 for Managing Unknown Contacts and Practical Unarmed Combat (MUC and PUC) from Southnarc of Shivworks. He makes his way out your way periodically.

MUC/PUC is part of ECQC, a 3-day class costing several hundred bucks. Totally worth it but if you don't own a handgun not really worth attending.

That said, if you can't do any of that, get his Practical Unarmed Combat DVD and actually drill the movements!

If you get a foundation in MUC and PUC you're ahead of most people WITH guns, and you can plug a gun or a knife in easily as needed or when you get one.

I may be out of line here , as I don't know all the details of where you go and what you do there. That being said, before you contemplate carrying deadly weapons, because of the people that frequent the places you go, maybe you should think about some new past times. To borrow from John Farnams "Three Rules", "dont go to stupid places, dont hang out with stupid people, and dont do stupid things." If your going to carry weapons, you have a duty to avoid trouble, not go where its frequent.
