Can I get some suggestions on some good military type semi auto rifles in an intermediate caliber other than an AR or AK? I have 3 .223 ARs and 1 in 9mm, an AK, and an an SKS. What is good under around $1500 or so. M1A, FAL?

The VZ.58, M1-Carbine, and M17S (pictured below) are my favorites. Other options include the MSAR (AUG clone) and SIG-556, amongst others.

FWIW, the M1A, FAL, HK-91, et cetera aren't chambered in intermediate cartridges, as they are .308Win./7.62NATO.

:)

there are a TON!!!! Tommy gun, Uzi, heck... just look up GunBroker.com and click on Semi auto rifle... you'll see stuff you never knew about...

The HK93 is chambered in .223. It's not cheap, collectors have jacked the prices beyond their useful value. A Valmet can be had in a variety, if you can find one.

Grab a copy of Jane's Infantry Weapons or Military Small Arms of the World by Hogg/Weeks, and good luck. The problem is that the dominance of the AK by mandate, and the AR by excellence, keeps the number of competing designs low.

id say VZ58, imagine the only eastern-bloc country at the time (czechoslovakia) who did not adopt the ak47, but went ahead and designed their own, the vz58. actually bought one before my first ak47:what:yep

That would be a good choice IMO. I had a VZ58 for a while (sold it to fund my AR). It's a good, reliable and lightweight design. Milled receiver, short stroke gas piston, falling breech block. The resign impregnated particle board (or whatever you want to call it) furniture is ugly as sin though.

i know for some the furniture on the vz might not satisfy, but i can tell you though the furniture is tough as nails. if anything you can always go tactical

I always thought the Daewoo rifles were pretty neat. I would get a VZ before one of those, though.

Definitely a VZ-58 (I like mine better than my AK's) and a Daewoo DR-200 sans the thumb-hole grip...add the ACE folder. One of the original piston AR style rifles but designed from the ground up. Personally I think the folks at Robinson spent much time reviewing before designing the XCR...another nice firearm. Again, I like mine better than an AR. Anyway, I liked it so much that when I came across another I bought it and plan to SBR one of them.

Others...maybe a smaller rifle & a smaller round? Maybe a PS90 or Beretta CX4 Storm? Those are the last two I have added; definitely something different.

Well the M1A and FAL are not in intermediate calibers... the 7.62x51 is definitely full-power by anybody's definition... but yes they are both excellent battle rifles, and with all your intermediate and pistol caliber rifles I'd say something with a little more power, penetration, and effective range would make a good addition to the lineup. There are lots of other semi .308s to consider, though you already named 2 of the best... there are Saiga .308s, .308 ARs, and G-3 pattern rifles too.

Dunno if it can be called "assault rifle", but State Dept and ATF caused me quite a burden that only ended with personal intervention by my US Senator when I imported my "instrument of war" back from Germany to CONUS in 2004. My name gives the hint of what firearm I refer to.

There are many different choices in military-pattern rifles available. If you just want to drop money on a new cool rifle, take a look at the SCAR, ACR, or the MSAR AUG clones.

If I'm correct in assuming by other than AR/AK you're talking about the AK-47/AKM then I'd suggest the AK-74. I got one a year ago for $400 with free shipping that functioned fine despite coming from CAI. Everyone seems to agree the 74 is more accurate than the 47, I have yet to get a SKS or AK-47 so I can't compare but the AK-74 seemed as accurate as I am.

Light recoil, cheap ammo, and the muzzle break looks cool around dusk.

I have an MSAR and absolutely love it. I would however prefer one of the newer, authentic Steyr AUGs although due to the Sabre shutodwn they are no longer in production. The perfect HD gun is an MSAR/AUG with can (where allowed). No gun wears a silencer better.

I haven't been particularly thrilled with my Sig 556 Swat. It had issues that required a send back and is far too front heavy. The patrol versions with shorter piston do seem to handle much better and supposedly a new version with removable barrel is on the way. This gun can also be had in 7.62 x 39 but reviews have not been favorable.

Like others have said an AK74 is a great gun too but i'd say go with Arsenal.

If money is no option i'd say grab a SCAR. I think the ACR is cooler on paper but not in execution.

MAS-49/56 - Kinda like a French M14

7.5 French originally, Century imported some and re-chambered them to .308. As with all century guns, quality control sucked, but if you get a good one they are a steal. Mine runs flawlessly and I picked it up at a gun show for $175. Even if you get a bad one, take it to a smith and have him re-ream the chamber with a .308 reamer.

I actually was looking at gunbroker today and saw the MSAR 556 and it's real nice looking and it seems they can be had for as cheap as 1k , also if you wanted a cheaper HK clone look at the century c-91. or maybe a PTR 91. good luck with you endeavors.
