Asking to see (see, not photocopy, transcribe, etc) a DL or CCW does one thing. It shows an attempt at due dilligence should something odd come of it later on.

The core requirement (Federally) for a legal transfer is that it must be between residents of the same state. Asking the buyer to show that he/she is also a resident of your state, worst case, shows that you are attempting to follow the rules, and best case may keep you out of an LE sting.

Does it Need to happen? No.
Might it be prudent with someone you don't know? Maybe.
Can it hurt you? Only as far as missing out on an accasional sale.

Y'all are lucky, wish I could leave California. however family trumps even uninhibited firearm ownership in my book (I still have mine, don't worry) just wish it was more free.

most of what you go on in other states is just how the guy feels, you can usually tell when something's shady. (I've spent some time in free states) and if you're worried, just take the piece down to the sherif and ask him to run the numbers, if they're good people they'll help you out. and if its stolen, you'll help a guy get his property back.

In Ohio, private person-to-person sales have no paperwork or ID showing requirement.

Most of the guns I've given up have been trade-ins to dealers. However, I think if I were selling to a private party, I would ask him to sign a dated bill of sale, with serial number of gun, etc., just so any future use of that gun wouldn't came back to haunt me. Just an extra precaution.

I do what is required by law and nothing more.

In TX, that means that I can't sell it to a person who I believe is not a legal purchaser. It doesn't require me to verify that he's a legal purchaser, it only says I have to reasonably believe that he's a legal purchaser.

And I expect the same thing of others. I won't provide any information to a buyer/seller that is not required by law.

I'm not trying to fly under the radar--I've filled out a TON of 4413 forms. I just don't believe in collecting records on gun buyers & sellers if I don't have to.

As a buyer I don't do paperwork, retina scans or any other paperwork nonsense for private transactions in state. I don't mind showing the seller my DL or CPL for proof of identity, but there will be no documenting, photocopying etc.

As a seller I like to see proof of identity/in state residence, but I don't require any documentation, nor do I participate in any documentation that the seller wants.

It's alright, welcome to the free world...

There is a Koncept which is lost to folks who are completely indoctrinated by governments such as that in The People's Repulik of California.

It is called.....ready?.....FREEDOM!

Get this! In a free society, honorable men can and do trade amoung each other. They even give each other their WORD! And to seal the deal, they SHAKE HANDS!

Now, I know that you have been: a Kompletely indoktrinated serf from the Socialist Republik, but...get this...Honorable men do not go rushing off to the police after doing something natural and normal, such as trading guns, and beg them to do an NCIC check.

Here's a last thought...in a free society, one is NOT assume to be a Kriminal FIRST.

My company wants me to move to Komifornia. I was there for the first part of this week. I hate it. My company can fire me or lay me off, I will never live in PRK until the marxists are gone. I take my own food so I don't pay any unnecessary taxes to MR/MS MARX. I am looking for a way to avoid any further PRK travel. Yuk, I feel the need for a big shower to rid me of the dirty feeling I get from being in a gun hating, socialist enclave.

I really hate kommifornia. I have to travel there at least once a month. The difference between being able to defend your life in Colorado to having the least desirable having the greatest protection in PRK is hard to take for me. I just got back to Colorado from California. Still feeling like I need to vomit.

I do buy & sell lots of cars, and the occaisional gun. What I Do is a simple bill of sale, date, serial #, description, purchase price, names of both parties, I have a form I made up on a single sheet of paper that has two copies on it. Both parties sign I tear it in half & we each get a half. It also contains my "AS IS SALE NO WARRANTY" disclaimer as well. It covers my @ss and the sellers' too.

if you are concerned about the legality of the gun, you should have asked the officer buddy to run the gun's serial number. I am actually pretty miffed that a police officer would take a driver's licence from a 'friend' and run it, then release this info to the public. It's really none of your business. How would you feel if next time you buy a movie ticket, the guy behind the glass starts writing down your DL number, then tells you he is giong to have is cop buddy 'check you out'?

Also, I would be hesistant to give out personal info, for fear of identity theft. To me, that is a much bigger risk.

I'm sorry. I worded it poorly. I didn't ask for the seller's driver's license number.

And I only gave the LEO friend the serial number of the handgun.
