I don't think the National ID movement is going anywhere, if one state jumps off the bandwagon, the whole thing falls apart.

And it's Illegal in Montana ;)

Tennessee passed legislation against it as well. Several states have. But we dont need to be content with MAYBE stopping this particular legislation. We need to focus on educating people to how dangerous it is and get legislation passed than bans such acts in the future.

An example is the legislation that was passed in several states (including Tennessee) that prohibits the government from taking firearms during "times of emergency". Pass legislation in advance that makes it even harder for acts like this to come into existence.

Good point, just because they were stopped once does not mean they won't try again.
The PTB have stated that they want this.

National ID alive and well in Indiana.

See, this is a big problem. These folks introduce a law and it doesnt go over in a big part of the country. We all pat ourselves on the back and talk about how glad we are that it didnt happen. Meanwhile, a big part of the country has been adopted it, meaning that part of our country is living under a Federal identification system. We THINK we have won, but we have really lost ground. And if 20 states wind up complying that means that they won nearly 1/2 the US with this maneuver, how many more will they pick up the next time around? And the next?

Kentucky, exactly. The 55mph speed limit and the drinking age of 21 both passed through the states gradually, and both by means of federal highway funds as carrot-and-stick. The same is virtually guaranteed for the national ID card.

Lots of states (including mine) require anyone over 18 to have either a driver's license or state ID card in their posession.

Only valid if you're driving (car, bike etc), otherwise it's not enforceable since Kolender vs Lawson back in 1983.

As others have already pointed out, you DO have to give your name, you absolutely do NOT have to show any ID unless they have a valid reason to ask for it.

As others have already pointed out, you DO have to give your name...
Only in fascist states. I've twice been briefly detained and then let go (in TX) after repeatedly refusing to disclose my identity to a LEO. (Obviously I only do that when not carrying or driving.)

I'd like to reiterate what Green Lantern already pointed out. If you have your a ccw license and if you're carrying, you're forced to carry an "internal passport." Worse, in many ccw states you're forced to preemptively provide your "internal passport" upon any official contact with a LEO, even if it's not explicitly requested.

That's what I implied tyme, but failed to clarify. Thanks for the correction.

So how many fascist states do require you to give your name to an LEO when stopped and questioned for no valid reason?

I tried to research that for my state, but got no where. Maybe ACLU...

edit: Here is a good resource for this topic.

Just say: "You don't need to see my identification. These aren't the droids you're looking for. He can go about his business. Move along," while employing assorted Jedi hand motions and you'll be fine.

They already have a national ID, what do you think your social security number is? You need it to get a job, to get a line of credit, to open a bank account, to get a state ID, to get a fishing/hunting license, or to get a passport. Maybe shrink the passport down to a size suitable for a wallet, make them manditory, and there you have it, a national ID system.

kansas does not require you to carry an id. IF a police offficer asks you who you are, and you do not provide one.... They WILL (at least in my town) take you to the station while they "verify" that you are who you say you are.Walking, riding as passenger, standing on a corner.
The only reason they need is,,, I thought he looked like the perp we looked for last night/week/ month.

ID is not required in Kansas,,,, do you have the time to waste?
