Patch lube

The crisco/bees wax is a patch, wad or bullet lube, not a general purpose lube. I use Ballistol exclusive for that. Little if any crisco will ever wind up in the mechanisms of the revolvers.
I can sure agree on the vegetables oils turning to a tough sludge. I do a fair amount of deep frying, turkeys, family fish frys, that sort of thing. It’s impossible to remove the oils that collect on the outsides of the big pots I use.

I did serious testing a few years back. I was traveling to a competition and wanted my best possible effort.
I found Hoppes Black Powder bore cleaner and patch lube to give the tightest groups. It shoots clean too. Thats what I use, fwiw.

I have switched to all Hoppes on my shooting equipment.
I can store this rifle for months and run a patch down the barrel and it comes out clean.

The guy that won the competition from the above picture swears by Ballistol, it is my#2 pick.

So what is your method of using Hoppes and Ballistol? Soaking wet patch or barely any? Pure ballistol or with water (moosemilk?). Id sure like to know what you do to get such great results with these two lubes...and very curious about how its applied as the application method can.make or break the load.

As for me, I prefer to cut a strip of patch material (I like pocket drill material)...and apply a wavy stream of lube down the length of the strip. ..then I roll the strip into a roll...then squeeze enough pressure by hand to distribute the lube across the width of the rolled up strip....the strip is thus dampened...not wet.
I like to cut my patches as I load. You always have your ball centered in the patch that way.
Pre cut patches can get off-center.
Start your ball. Cut the patch at the muzzle.

The Hoppes is used straight from the bottle.
The Ballistol is mixed per instructions with water. .....and used in the same manner.

Ballistol is water soluable oil.(moose milk)

Folks will usually mix Ballistol with water in a ratio of anywhere from between 1:4 - 1:8, soak the patch material with it and then lay it flat to dry.
If not enough of the Ballistol lube residue remains in the material after the water dries then it would need to be treated again.
The amount of Ballistol applied to the material is supposed to be individualized and dependent on accuracy testing of the loads being fired.

Thanks guys! Ill be getting a hawken soon...gathering all the info i can. I already use ballistol (moose milk) and water mix for spraying down parts and gun frames after theyve been cleaned with L.A. Totally Awesome...helps put a thin protective coat while i work on the guns. So im guessing ill be experimenting with Hoppes Plus black powder patch lube/gun cleaner and ballistol moose milk. I have two bottles of Hoppes Plus that i have never used as i didnt like it as a gun lube....so maybe this will make up for what i felt was bad compulsive buy.

Ballistol only for cleaning and preserving.

Mineral oil, soy wax and beeswax for a lube and lube cookies.
Have to make it pretty dang hard.
If it isnt rock solid at room temperature it'll run like water when I'm out in the desert in +°110 temps.

I just add more oil to soften as it cools outside.

What's your favorite patch lube?

50/50 mix of melted beeswax and cheap olive oil. Allow to harden.
Works for a lot of things beside patch lube.
In really cold weather I switch to 40/60 beeswax and cheap olive oil
For Conical bullets I reverse and use 60/40 beeswax and cheap olive oil, and for cartridge bullets that I've cast, I go up to 70% beeswax.

NAPA soluble cutting & grinding oil has been mentioned as an alternative to Ballistol for making moose milk and shooting patches using the same accuracy testing method that Dutch Schoultz recommends. --->>> [SEE POSTS #1 & #8] https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/patch-material-for-muzzle-loaders.680589/#post-8450027

Anyone use Wipe-out Black powder Clean and lube?

I am a newbie to the sport so can't give a lot of first hand advice. However yesterday shot my new Inline and this time used the Wipe-out. Have to say it really cleaned and lubed much better than the typical butter sold over the counter.Dissolved the crude quickly and made the rod much easier to push through. Was getting good groups at 50 yds open sights. (like I said, I am a newbie so consider the source). I would be interested in seeing a veteran shooter has to say after trying.

I use a wipe between my fingers of Anhydrous lanolin on the dry patches I use. I prefer Wonderlubed pre cuts tho.

Aren’t these threads interesting. Who’d thought there was so many ways to wet a piece of cloth and blast it down range. Kentucky squirrel hunters had it easy, spit or animal grease. Water and elbow grease for clean up, luck they may have some lye soap. :(

We do have many more options in every pursuit including this one. I think it’s a,good thing but if I’m making recommendations for a newcomer to the sport I fall back on spit patches and water for cleanup.

They can wander off into the weeds later on...

I also use olive oil, but mixed with the remains of these big candles the wife buys to destink the bathroom. Works pretty good, at least for me.

Smells lovely too huh? Wife bought some of those nice Orange scented candles for the bathroom. Asked me what I thought of them and I told her, “Smells like I dropped a deuce in an orange grove.” She misunderstood the remark entirely...

I have never used the wax from scented candles...but i wonder if the scent would alert game that there was a human near by. So does it affect hunting or would you all say it wont?

Anyone interested in the Dutch Schultz dry lube shooting system here is a link. http://blackpowderrifleaccuracy.com/ Dutch sold his dry lube information packet to supplement social security. I believe he sold it to someone and you can now buy it on eBay. It's a good system and worked well for me but my rifle needed a tight patch ball combo for it to work well. My hands got so bad I can not use the system anymore.
