It is often said that the only stupid question is the one not asked. Sometimes I wonder.

Internet Price Checks.

Have you ever saved a lot (10% or $50, whichever is more) on a common gun by inquiry on an Internet forum like this one?

Have you ever declined to buy an uncommon gun because somebody on a board said the price was too high? Did you ever find one? Cheaper?

If you have bought a gun for whatever price, why ask if you got a good deal after the fact? What will you do if somebody says you paid too much by his standards?

If you bought a gun for a ridiculously low price - lots of widow deals going on - why ask if you got a good deal when you know you got it so cheap as to likely be thought unethical?

OK I'll bite.

-- The only guns I've bought over the internet were ones that I could not find locally. Price was not the motivating factor

Have you ever declined to buy an uncommon gun because somebody on a board said the price was too high? Did you ever find one? Cheaper?
-- Never done that. If I see an uncommon gun that I really want for a reasonable price, I buy it.

If you have bought a gun for whatever price, why ask if you got a good deal after the fact? What will you do if somebody says you paid too much by his standards?
-- Asking makes you feel better that you did not get scalped. If you did get scalped, you might feel worse tough.

If you bought a gun for a ridiculously low price - lots of widow deals going on - why ask if you got a good deal when you know you got it so cheap as to likely be thought unethical?
-- Gloating

"What is the best ...............?"

A question beginning with that phrase immediately causes me to go comatose.

A suggestion: Take your "internet" price, and add about $40-50 bucks to it, to handle shipping and your FFL's trouble for the background check. Odds are, you may not think that the "internet" prices is that good anymore.

I've ran across several good deals in the for sale section of this board.

One of the rifles was going for 1/2 of what the gentleman had invested into it, low round count, but I had other commitments at the time.

A shot gun that had never been shot, just sat in a gentlemans gun safe, for $300 less than the retail price.

Kick myself for not purchase either of these.

Those aren't questions, just bragging.

I'm quite sure many have and know for a fact that a few have as you see some specimens for sale with outrageous price tags. We have pointed out better bargains that were bought instead.

The in the same league - "I want to start reloading" and then they get testy when they are asked to use the Search Function!

Then next dumbest question is when people ask for loading information cause they are too lazy to do their own leg work!

Then there those posters that go from zero knowledge to know it alls and vaunted experts all in an incredible amount of time!

Or those that have tell people it takes a little tweaking of the "clip" feed lips to make inexpensive pistol shoot! Then they talk about CCW use, and they do not even live in a CCW state? Or better they do not have a permit to carry!

But, the absolute best is when 99 percent of the people point out the obvious, and the poster goes the opposite direction!

Another one is those that have to make reloading about saving money!

I thank the folks on this forum.

not on a gun, my excuse is that I live in CA and feel intimidated by all the hear-say regulations.

Still, I saved more than 50% on my _knife_ purchases because I looked up this and related forum (knifeforums.com) only then realized that I shoud not buy at my local mall prices.

According to recommendations on this forum, I got my Benchmade 806D2 for a little less than $90, compared to the 180-200 price tag at my local mall store. I also got my Kershaw Blur tanto for a little less than $45, compared to the $70 gun-show price and the $99.99 msrp.

My answers to your dumb pet questions::)

Have you ever saved a lot ...? no. (I never made an inquiry.)

Have you ever declined to buy ...? no, no, yes. (Never asked the question)

Why ask if you got a good deal ...? dunno, (Haven't done it.)
What will you do ...? I'll go to the next post. (I don't chart my path by the standards of anonymous opinionators)

why ask ... unethical? Maybe to brag (Never did it)

I believe there are very good deals out there because I've often given them. Similarly, the best price I can get is due to my own research with the dealers and sellers available to me. I'm also willing to pay more to support local dealers over Wal-mart for example.

I often enjoy reading what other's think but the deals are really all about me.

Back when the AWB was in effect I saved my self a bundle of money by asking a few questions about the difference between GWB ban and the Clinton ban.

Most of the time I ask the questions on THR once I get the gun home.

If they tell me it's a screw deal I just keep my mouth shut and pretend I didn't buy it:evil:

I did make an exception and rush home to ask about buying a Colt woodsman match target. I got good info and snatched it up

not sure i'm really grasping the point of the question, but i have purchased many items (guns and scopes and reloading and accessories) direct from the internet and in the EE at arfcom and here, not to mention gunsamerica/gunbroker/auctionarms. my experience is that i save a ton, even after shipping and transfer.

however, i still by most of my stuff locally, even though it's more expensive, because i want to support my local gun store (details of which have been covered on THR ad nauseam)

The absoluted dumbest reloading question "How grains of powder are in a pound?" Man that is reloading 101! And, it is freaking dumb question!:banghead:

Reloading 101; guess you have to start somewhere??

I have never once asked if I got a good price on a gun. I paid a price that I agreed to and that is as far as it goes with me. If I paid an extra $20 or even $50, so be it. I try not to look back, only forward when it comes to buying the next firearm. The forum is full of dumb questions, but it also is full of good questions and answers that will teach you something. I'm interested in learning.

THR is good for example, If "HomieG" logs on and asks:

Yo man one of my peeps wants to unload a chromed davis on me for a cool 3 bills is dat too much bank for dat gat?

Half of the posters would inform "homie" that a Davis is an inferior self defense weapon and $300 is way too much to spend. He would be much better served by a used Ruger.

The other half of THR would tell him to buy it because it is awesome cool
and it can take down Tanks and personnel carriers with armor piercing bullets.

Let me clarify. I don't mean ordering from a www advertisement, I mean coming on a board like this one and asking:
Where can I get a Brand X for cheap?
or
I can get a Brand X for $599.95, is that a good deal?
Did somebody tell you where to get one "for cheap" or for $539.95 or less?

How much for shipping?
If you get a good deal on a gun will you be turned off by paying a few dollars for shipping?

"I mean coming on a board like this one and asking:
Where can I get a Brand X for cheap?"

I don't recall if I actually had to ask, but it was definitely because of a board like this that I got a recommendation on a great place to buy a new Cooper Custom Classic 57M .22LR for less than my local dealer wanted. A lot less - a little over 19% less if I count the 5% sales tax I didn't have to pay. MSRP was $1895 and I paid $1569 plus $25 for the transfer and $12 for shipping.

Not only was the transaction painless, the person who took my phone order actually apologized for having to charge me $2 extra due to the value of the gun - $12 shipping instead of their usual $10.

My dad really liked his gift. :D
