Well, it finally happened, a monster attack my family and I fumbled. Let me vent my troubles to my 2nd amendment loving American brothers.
Tues, 28 July 2009 mid afternoon, I was at my kitchen table going through the day’s mail, I heard my dog barking. Dorothy, my 55 pound yellow lab and one of my best friends, was at my feet looking for food then-- she went ape **** at the front door. So- I wonder over to see.
I saw my wife, with my 14 month old daughter in her arms scared, screaming, and running across my front yard with a very large unknown dog violently in chase.
I instantly decide to kill what is threatening my family. So- at this point I was still in my kitchen I ran towards the front door, no gun to be seen, and no gun on my hip. On the way out the door I grab the only thing I could, a beer bottle from the night before off the kitchen counter, (an empty bottle of Samuel Adams blackberry witbier). As I exit my house though the screen door I trip, fall, and skid across the cement side walk. Now I am on my chest and really bleeding, my loving dog Dorothy runs over me towards the rest of my family. I get up and continue towards my wife and only child. Dorothy gets to the monster first, they start to fight, which gets my wife and child get yards away from the monster. Four or five seconds later I am able to get one good kick into the side of this ogre of a dog and swing the beer bottle near the head of this ugly dog, then this random unknown dog runs off in the woods. I decided to go to my wife and child instead of chasing the f-ing dog, everyone is fine. Wife is crying, baby is crying- but no bite marks on Erin’s calves. My dog Dorothy has no holes in her either. I am pissed, bleeding, and upset at myself for not killing the monster. The whole event honestly lasted less than 25 seconds.
I just got back from driving up and down the road I live on, cannot find that soon to be dead dog, I live in the middle of nowhere and know all neighbors within a mile of my home. The dog is grayish black with a green collar. I will kill it. The state troopers were no help, they took a report and left.
I am 37, I am wealthy, a gun lover, have 19 years in the army (9 as an active duty grunt, 10 as a medical officer 66f-as a reservist, still in), have done two deployments since 9-11, was in desert storm, have been shot at, and have confirm kills, my dd214 has three pages, I routinely shot idpa, have a unrestricted carry concealed pistol permit in New York state, I have a room full of guns and ammo, at my bedside are another three. In my gun room- there are no less than a 100,000 rounds. None of this helped me protect my family this past Tuesday.
I want pictures of how others have guns have their guns ready for action, no bull**** statements,, only real life pictures of your gun at its ready. Any idiot can say I have a so and so gun here or there, with an ac130 above my house at all times. I along with others need to have a better plan. I have started off with my own pics.

A picture? You'd just see me. My Kel Tec is always in my pocket. I usually also have a 1911 on my hip. Only gun you can count on is the one on your person. My 870 in the bedroom might by handy in the middle of the night, might not, but the .380's always in my right pocket, spare mag in the left rattling around under my keys.

Umm, on closer look I hope this isn't a case of TMI. So anyway, it's a GLOCK 21 with a KRISS 30 round mag. It's backed up by another KRISS mag & a standard G21 mag with a +2 base (which in .45 really amounts to a +1)

fn tps(otherwise known as winchester 1300) in front hall closet

i have a fn tps, ported barrel with a 6 shot side saddle in the front closet, loaded,, with out a round in the chamber, the safety is off, the closet lock with a kiddy lock, i have to open the closet door and grab gun and pump it , for the shotgun to be able to shoot,, it is loaded with 2.75 inch 7.5 shot six in the tube six in the side saddle, this should work at the front door, i think it needs a light,, no street lights where i live,, i took me too much time to open closetdoor - grab gun, pump it, and shot it off my front porch ( no nieghbors),, i need to practice

I've always found a good stream of Water from any plain old Garden Hose, Water turned on full blast...works fine to drive off bothersome stray Dogs...

Easy to do...only takes a second...

The only way you'll se what I use for home defense is if you invade my home...

And you don't want to do that...

:)

(This response is not directed at any THR member, but to the many trolls lurking our site.)

Yes, troll, I'm talking to you - I see you there behind that keyboard drinking your chai latte and scoffing at me...

Hehehehe! That's funny stuff.

I would offer you a word of caution in completely detailing the defensive layout of your domicile. These posts tend to stay on the idiotnet forever and you never know who might have access to them or what their motives might be. I'm not talking about the Gubmint or Antis and no need for a tinfoil hat. What I am alluding to is Criminals that might want to releive you of these items or otherwise do you harm. Keep it safe and don't give out all your secrets.

The best suggestion I can give you is to Carry on your person. That way you always know where the gun is and can quickly access it. No more grasping for beer bottles. Since you have a Permit that should be an easy accomplishment.

I have several different weapons in the safe in my bedroom, a 1911 in the nightstand and a pistol stashed here and there in high places throughout the house. I also live in the middle of nowhere and keep a shotgun and sometimes a pistol in the truck. Sorry for not posting pics but I don't feel it's necessary.

You have a lot of nice weaponry there. When are you going on vacation next?

I am with lanternlad1, there is no way I am going to lay out my specific home plan on an Internet forum.

The first thing you need to do is buy some of this (or something like it) for your wife:
dog-pepper-spray.gif
It works and is non-lethal.

Second, you made the statements:
...but no bite marks on Erin’s calves.
I just got back from driving up and down the road I live on, cannot find that soon to be dead dog, I live in the middle of nowhere and know all neighbors within a mile of my home. The dog is grayish black with a green collar. I will kill it.
I am not a lawyer, but I would tend to think that if you killed that dog with no physical evidence that it actually did any harm, you could stand the risk of losing your entire "arsenal".

Sure, you're upset and of course want to protect your family. I get that. I would be pissed too, but with all do respect, you're not in the Army any more. Killing something isn't the answer to every problem. Don't put your family at further risk by taking the chance that your guns could be taken away or by YOU going away to serve time.

Also remember, Chuck Schumer is your Senator. If you really want to be one of our "2nd amendment loving American brothers", please don't do something stupid with your guns!

Scott

I'm not at home right now, so I can't take any pictures, but I will say again what several people have already said.

A gun anywhere but in your pocket or on your hip is useless to you. If you have to run to get a gun, the action will usually be over before you can reach it, even if it's just across the room.

A gun is always on my person at home unless I'm in bed, at which time it's in the lockbox bolted to my nightstand. When I go out, it stays on me unless I'm going into a place where it's illegal (not too many places in NH :D )

How about a nice push button or biometric safe downstairs? (Thats what I do). I also installed a nice looking but effective wooden picket fence. I had a chow come after me & my dogs in my own yard a few years ago. No kids yet. When the owner got there, I strongly suggested needed to get rid of that dog....... to my suprise, they did! Even a tame family dog is a great aid in home defense. My dogs kept the Chow's attention while I rained kicks down on it. In your case your humble lab jumped it and saved your wife & child from serious harm / or worse.

I still put up a fence, keeps my kids in, others dogs out.

Give your Lab a big steak, he/she deserves it!

noxx, nice comment,, i go next week,, there many buildings on my property,, u would never find the gun room, and they are insured,, but that is not the thought i have of this thread, i live 800 or so feet from the road, fences are are not my question,(most of my land is fenced,,,,why bother bolting a lock box to a wooden piece of furniture, some badguy good easly trash the nightstand, and be off with your lock box and its contents,,, and yes a gun other than a moument from your hand is of lesser value, but u can't have a gun on your hip when u are in the pool with your kids, but is a night stand, hollowed large book, or a corner of your closet, the best options, i thinking of building of a small wall shelf/or picture that moves to give u quick access to the weapon,,,

now i work with drug carts that had fingerprint access,, these were high end, if your finger is wet, varied calises, or slighty dirty they will not work, we had them removed for that reason,,, n

the gun nazi schumer has almost been in spitting distance,, but not close enough,,
my wife has mace in the center console of her car,, hoses were wraped up,,, my dog dorothy eats better than most people,,, love the feed back,,keep it coming,,

You mean like a so-called medical professional who doesn't know how to spell "calluses"?

+1!!!

You have a kid now. In my house, if it's not on me, it's in the safe. Don't chance it.

My lock box is to keep kids out. If were not home, they can take it all, but if we are, I am not leaving a loaded handgun for a kid or a theif to find. (They would have to get the safe open.) They could more easily steel the whole thing, but while they are here they wouldnt have a functional gun......but I will.

No pictures, sorry, but were you to see some, one would depict a G19 sitting atop some books on a bookshelf, unholstered, full magazine +1 in the chamber. More-or-less a grab'n-go position. Have a similar arrangement with a Springfield XD in another room. Could grab the G19 from the bedroom end of home, or the XD from the living room. Were your case mine, I'd grab the XD from the living room shelf on the way to the front door.

Curiously, my next door neighbor was encircled and attacked by three big dogs one morning while he was putting his trash bin out by the curb. While two of the barking vermin held his attention on one side, the third came up behind him and sank teeth into the back of his leg, just above his knee. He managed to kick the dogs off, went inside, retrieved his G22, stormed outside “to kill those damned doges,” saw that the dogs had departed, and instead went directly to the home of the owner of one of those dogs and made it clear what would happen to their dog or any others that he ever found roaming in a pack like that again. This guy is a big guy, a reserve deputy sheriff, and he was shaken up by the idea that if he'd been toppled by one of those dogs, he'd have a hell of a time getting them off, if at all. One more thing that shook him up, lots of little kids in the neighborhood and a few infirm and elderly folks: had one of them been outside then instead of him, they might well have been killed by the dogs. (And, unfortunately, that's what happened to an elderly woman who went out one day to check her mail in one of the surrounding rural communities. Two dogs in that case, as I recall.)

And writes in text speak
Every hospital I've ever worked in the drugs were kept under lock and key (sometimes two separate keys) in a stationary location and physically accounted and signed for at the begining of each shift by the charge nurse. a mobile drug cart (biometric or otherwise) is an invatation to theft.

My Geck-O-meter is pegging
