I protected certain surfaces, like the bolt, the cocking tube and the muzzle. I used blue painters tape for the bolt and cocking tube, and used a ear plug to protect the barrel.
Here's the STG-58 I'm building. This is what it looked like out of the box. By now I've collect all the required USA made parts, de-cosmo'd it all and I'm in the process of Gunkoting and reassembling.

Probably has a lot to do with availability, price and reliablity of the FALs that are easy to find. If it was easy to find a reliable and afforable quality G3 we people would buy them.
