Placement of home defense SHOTGUNS

I wont go into where to put such weaponry as there are too many variables to consider. But, I will say this....when children are around, try to keep all weapons hidden. After all...out of sight hopefully means out of mind.

Plus, more important than any hiding place, educate all children residing within the household (depending, of course, on age) about firearms, their use, and any safety measures related thereof.

When it comes to firearms + children, there is no greater deterrent devised by man than the proper education and training of all matters relating to weapons and weaponcraft.

I also don't believe i hiding guns from kids. Yes it only takes once but I feel if they are shown how to handle guns and not shielded from them they will leave them alone. I was a very bad kid but I always respected guns. I think it was mostly because if I messed up I couldn't shoot anymore. Of course my youngest is now 11 I was probably more worried when they were 4 or 5.

But, you have to consider that not every child within the household may know about and/or respect weapons (ie. visiting children). Children, as a whole, are just too curious. Best to keep them hidden as a general rule, IMHO. Once educated, then things might open up a bit.

I only allow visiting kids with my permission. I admit that this is a variable with some people. I only keep 2 guns out, 1 a shotgun by my bed and 2. 22 revolver loaded with snake shot high in kitchen. The 22 is for a snake I found under my kitchen sink. If he ever comes back. I hate and or fear snakes.

Because he's using a coach gun.
Yeah, he said that and I spaced. Good call.

Which is why it's best to teach your kids to not have unannounced visitors, and to explain to them that some things, like guns and family matters, are just not talked about in public. My 7yr old clearly 'gets' this. My 5yrd old does not, but she's willing to go along and 'be a good listening grrl'. :)

I'd rather teach my kids how to be mature than hide some basic aspects of life from them.

Here in NC, if you have children under 18 in the house you HAVE TO keep them locked up, with at least a trigger lock.
Happily I live in an apartment with no children to speak of.

Even if I believed in the philosophy of not hiding guns from kids, I'd still lock the guns up. I wouldn't just leave the guns out. There are too many variables with which to contend. There would be my kids, the neighbor's kid, etc.

In Cali, the gun owner is responsible if a kid hurts anybody with the owner's gun, unless the kid gained access to the gun illegally (e.g., broke into the safe). Leaving the guns out would be the equivalent of trusting everybody in my house with my balls swinging in the wind. The trust may be there, but damn I'm not putting my stuff out there like that.

I thought that anthropomorphism was abandoned as a prevailing belief when we stopped living in caves.

Silly me.

<sigh>
