For pocket carry, what is your pick in an automatic? I'm thinking maybe of an lc9. Also, are there any pocket-carryable 45acp pistols on the market?

Just to be clear, I'm considering 9mm and up, and fit in a pocket holster

Once you get past the micro sized 380's pocket carry starts getting tight.
To that end when it fits my cargo pockets of the particular shorts I am wearing in our blast furnace summers I carry the Khar PM9.
When it doesnt fit the cargo pocket shorts I have grabbed it's back to the Diamondback 380.

I Pocket Carry Almost 100% of the Time

The three pistols I own that are best suited for pocket carry are my Kahr PM9, Kahr P380, and S&W 340PD. My favorite of the three is the PM9. Kahr makes similar pistols in 40 cal and 45 ACP. The guns are small, lightweight, accurate, reliable, and easy to conceal. If you purchase a Kahr make sure you fire the required 200 rounds to adequately break-in the pistol. You may experience some FTF and FTE during the break-in. Don't worry this is normal. The gun will work flawlessly after the 200 break-in rounds are fired. I carry PM9 daily and have put about 800 rounds through it since break-in without a failure of any kind. I use a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster.

WRGADog is right about the Khar break in.
However I could tell my PM9 was pretty much totally seated in before the first box of ammo had been exhausted.
I have over 300 rounds through mine and as long as I stay with the supplied six round magazine it feeds, fires, and spits out every ammo brand I have put through it.
They are very nice pistols and should be for the price.

hmmm the pf9 is about 30% slimmer than the 45acp kahr....maybe i should stick with 9mm

I carry my Kel-tec PF-9 mostly in my pockets. Shorts, jeans, dockers... whatever. Nice and thin, pretty light and shoots great.

My PF9 is a belt gun, but I have PC'd it, though it gets a little snug in jeans. In dress pants, it works pretty good. In jeans, I usually swap the magazine out for the flat-bottomed one, but it still prints some.

Best pocket rockets for me are the Ruger LCP in .380, 9x17 Kurz and the Kahr CM 9 in 9x19 Luger.

I carry the Keltec P3AT .380 in a pocket holster most of the time. The largest pocket carry piece I have that actually successfully conceals in a pocket holster is a S&W Model 640 in .38 Special.

I've pocket carried a KelTec PF-9 for 2-1/2 years now. I carry it in a DeSantis Superfly holster. Works real well.

A pf9 will fit in many pockets and is cheap enough to buy and only use for a single purpose.

My PPS can fit in some pockets, but I have big pockets ... on the rare occasion I don't just wear the PPS in a CB ST I drop it in a really crappy single clip IWB holster and toss the whole thing in my pocket ... but IWB carry with quality gear is just so easy I never bother.

When I complete discretion (even rarer) I use a p32 in a little Kydex holster I had made up for it - the little mousegun runs like a top and is plenty adequate for a "get off me gun" or for "shoot&scoot" ... if your choice is "armed with mousegun" or "unarmed" caliber discussion gets pointless.

In terms of size, how does pocket carrying the Kahr CM9 compare to a S&W 642? The S&W feels like a paperback novel in my pocket. Is the Kahr any smaller?

The difference here MAKster is the over all length of the gun.
I happen to own an older early 1970's Smith model 37 Airweight which is one of the fore fathers of all Smith snub revolvers of today and is light enough for pocket carry but because of the width of the 5 round cylinder AND the over all length of the gun pocket carrying became a hassle.
Why??
Because while pocket carrying the butt of the gun kept trying to peak up out of my Navy blue uniform pants as well as my winter wear Wrangler blue jeans so I finally solved that by taking an old navy colored T shirt and cutting from it to form a a "masking" cloth to put in my pocket to cover the model 37 butt.
Texas is a concealed means concealed state.
But doing that was too much so I opt for the PM9 or Diamondback 380 out of size, conveinience, and more ammo if necessary.
Wheelguns are still not to be discounted and most definitely have followers.
Just not for me on a daily carry situation.
YMMV.

As opposed to quickly sticking a gun in your pocket, for continuous, practical pocket carry I think the Kahr PM9 and the lightweight small-frame revolvers are the upper limit, and then only with larger pockets like those of cargo pants, some slacks, etc. Remember that you need to leave enough room to get all your fingers on the grip on the first try.

I only have experience with the PM9; I assume the CM is the same size. It is both shorter and thinner (because there is no cylinder bulge) than the revolver. They are roughly the same weight. And, you get two more rounds of what (IMO) is a more efficient cartridge in short barrels.

I would like to say this in regards to the snub wheelguns and their followers, the one thing I liked most about carrying my Smith model 37 is there was an absolute positive feel and grip on the butt to pull it from it's pocket holster which was actually superior in quickness of actual draw speed for me at least for my two referenced earlier semi auto carry pistols.
The old 37's grip with the original wood was so easy to grip and pull.

I pocket carry both the PM9 and a 442 Smith regularly, since the discussion is getting around to revolvers as well.

Both work well in the weight department. How much weight you can tolerate will depend on you, but I like to keep loaded weight to under 20 oz. or thereabouts. If you can handle more weight, then your options open up considerable in both the small revolver and auto choices.

Both are reasonably small and flat. The PM is flatter (naturally). But the 5 shot Smith is flat enough and I think that too much is made of a revolver's cylinder "printing". I really do.

The Smith draws Much easier and quicker due to its design, especially with wood boot grips. The PM, while it does not snag, is not as smooth or as quick as the Smith. It just isn't. Its a blocky auto. A small blocky auto, but blocky nonetheless, compared to a "hammerless" Smith. It's slower and more cumbersome, despite its size.

Like someone else said, there is a "positive feel" when drawing the Smith. As smooth and fast as pocket carry can get.

I would say that the PM draws about as smooth as a Hammered small, light revolver, like the Colt Agent (which I also pocket carry now and then). I find I need to "thumb-over" the hammer of the Agent and the back of the slide of the PM to insure a decent draw.

You really need to try a few different pocket holsters to decide what works. You should perhaps consider starting with a Mika (for both PM and J). I really don't think you need a high-class expertly molded expensive holster for pocket carry as "retention" is not an issue. Just something pretty basic that covers the trigger and allows for a reasonable and safe draw.

In terms of larger caliber autos, you might think about the PM 40. Or maybe a J frame .357 revolver. The PM 45 might be ok, if you dont mind the extra weight and you can wear pants with pockets big enough to make it work .

It's a ruger lcp for me, but that might change when I get a kahr p380.

If I was to squeeze a 9mm in my pocket it would be my kahr pm9 or maybe a daimondback db9.

The pf9, lc9 and T709, and other similarly sized 9mms are too big IMO for pocket carry.

In very hot weather & depending on what I'm wearing either

Ruger LCP in a DeSantis Nemesis Holster

Or

Ruger LC9 in a larger DeSantis Nemesis Holster

The LC9 is about 20% larger, but is 1oo% easier for me to shoot.

Do not want to hurt any ones feeling but had a Kel Tek P11 & could not get rid of it fast enough.

Just my .02
