what model is that? I've got my eye on a new Savage and have narrowed it down to one of 2 or 3 different ones.

11FXP3 Short Action, in .308
Savage is/was offering an in store $50 rebate. I put it on layaway for $349, with a 3x9x40 scope
A buddy of mine has one, and absolutely loves it. Says it drives tacks at 100 yards, and he's taken elk and deer with it.

One of my more recent range days.

Battle rifle definitions...

may need to be re-posted for the sake of our AK-owning friends. ;)

(ie, difference between battle rifle and assault rifle, as it were)

Gewehr98, I know the diff. The Galil is a .308 ARM. The AR15 and AUG just happened to be in the same pics. :D

Yup, I saw the .308 Galil.

Got a friend trying to sell me his as he's enduring gunowner Hell in California. There are indeed battle rifles in and amongst your AR and AUG.

I meant Ewok_Guy and yzguy. ;)

PS: added the AK and AR for the hell of it.. :p

Please bear with my ignorance, but what is the difference between a 'battle' rifle or an 'assault' rifle? Do they not achieve the same ends?

A battle rifle is usually defined as a military issue rifle which shoots a full-power cartridge, such as 8mm Mauser, .30-06, or 7.62x51mm. Battle rifles can be bolt-action, or autoloaders. Rifles in this category include the Mauser and Enfield variants, the HK G3, the U.S. M1 Garand, the M14, and the FN FAL.

An assault rifle is usually defined as a select-fire automatic rifle shooting an intermediate cartridge, such as the 8mm Kurz, 7.62x39mm, or 5.56x45mm (a.k.a.223 Remington). Rifles in this category include the StG44, the AK-47 series, the M-16 series, and most current military issue rifles like the FAMAS or the British SA-80.

Semi-auto variants of military assault rifles are *not* properly termed assault rifles. An assault rifle, by definition, is a select-fire weapon capable of full-auto and semi-auto fire. If it can't shoot bursts, it's not an assault rifle, regardless of liberal gun-banner terminology.

In reality, those battle rifles are really, "old war horses" and the assault rifles are the battle rifles of today. Very few countrys today field a 7.62x51(or equivalent) rifle as their MBR. So doesnt that in fact make the lowly AR and AK the MBR of today and relagate the others to reserve or home forces? Even at that, the reserves carry M16's.

Well thank God I don't own an 'assault' rifle like I've been led to believe. My SKS only shoots semi-auto, so I guess it's not an evil weapon.....
