There is a current thread that asks us to post a picture of our targets. It's really neat seeing how others are doing and with what firearms and it got me to thinking that we could take this one step further.

Here's my suggestion.

For anyone who wants to participate in this first experiment,
1) Print out THIS TARGET (warning .PDF file)
2) Shoot it at 45 feet (15 yards) with the pistol of your choice and in the style of your choice.
3) Post your results along with a description of the pistol and style.

The idea is that we can have a real comparison of skill under relatively consistant circumstances.

If people like this idea maybe we can expand it out to other distances, targets, and up to rifles and such.

I'm going to the range tomorrow so I'll post mine :D

I've printed a target. If we don't get rained out I should be able to give it a try this Sunday. then I'll have to get one of my kids to help me post the darn thing
I can say I don't know what I'm doing with a computer
Mark.

ZeSpectre said, "with the pistol of your choice and in the style of your choice".

I would think as long as you said the target was shot from the bench or a rest it would be OK.
Along with other information like using a Red Dot sight, shot indoors or outdoors in a 25 knot wind, shooting one hand, left handed, etc.

What say you ZeSpectre?

Bench is fine, just make sure you mentioned that in the description.

As an intro I'm trying to leave this one pretty open, if we all have fun with it then we can narrow things down on the next one.

If it all goes over well I could see having a "weekly" or "Monthly" challenge grow out of this where we come up with some oddball (but SAFE) restrictions on the target and/or shooting style. I've already got about 5 more lined up in my head :D

Cool idea!! I'm in, but I won't be able to shoot until the weekend.

PS- Wow is Compuserve really still out there? I thought they were absorbed by AOL and Time Warner

Cheers,
ChickenHawk

Sounds like a cool idea, infact it is a cool idea. As long as people take the time to tell us enough info.

I see these as the minumum feel free to add or tell me I am off base

Caliber
Make/ Model of Gun
Position
Conditions (especially indoor/ outdoor)
Bullet Weight
Factory or Handload Ammo

this sounds great,it will be interesting to see results. The next time I can go out I'll do a posting.

Would love to do this with milsurp rifles also,it would really be interesting to see what others can accomplish with their's and with what ammo also.It would show what might be common for a particular rifle and inspire to be better.Personally I've already seen some others that can leave me in the dust with groupings out of their K31,which inspires.

Can someone do me a quick favor...I just formatted my computer and currently don't have a pdf viewer on here.

Can someone please post the target on here, and tell me the correct size it should be.

I will print it out and take it to the range if I get to go tomorrow. I gotta warn you though, I am still getting used to those darn hiene sights. Maybe I'll use the PT92 or the P3AT instead.
I love this idea. Good job Zespectre.

Oh boy, here we go...

Taurus Millennium Pro PT-140 @ 45 feet
.40 S&W w/180gr FMJ (Georgia Arms Reloads)
10 round magazine
Fired Left (strong) hand, unsupported (Duelist/bullseye style)
Combat speed (fairly rapid fire but not super fast)
NRA-HQ Range on 2/15/2007

The very first shot was a flier darn it! But anyway I'm not at all displeased with the rest from a DAO gun and a pretty short barrel.

CZ-52 @ 45 feet
7.62x25 (Tokarev) w/85gr FMJ (Romanian Surplus)
8 round magazine
Fired Left (strong) hand, unsupported (Duelist/bullseye style)
Combat speed (fairly rapid fire but not super fast)
NRA-HQ Range on 2/15/2007

Grouping wandered a bit, but considering this is a 50+ year old mil-surp with sucky iron sights that are kinda hard for my eyes to see I'm not dissatisfied. (God help me I LOVE this pistol!)

============================================
Kel-Tec P-3AT @ 45 feet
.380 Auto w/95gr FMJ (American Eagle)
6 round magazine
Fired Left (strong) hand, unsupported (Duelist/bullseye style)
Combat speed (fairly rapid fire but not super fast)
NRA-HQ Range on 2/15/2007

Yikes! The P-3AT is a brand new gun to me with less than 150 rounds through it. It's a brutal little sucker to fire and, obviously, only good for much closer range than I was shooting. The other four rounds were all high and right and just off the target paper. When I get the magazine extensions for this sucker I'm going to try it again and see if a little more grip improves the situation.

if it wasnt below zero here with the wind chill, and we didnt just get over a foot of snow, id already have mine up..:cuss:

in due time.

I'll see if I can get some results from a .32 and .45 tomorrow.

P.S. If you can do more than 100 double-action dry-fires with a CZ 70, you should have no problem climbing cliffs. Or walls, for that matter.

sounds great this is kinda like those mail matches they used to have on surplusrifles.com, they seemed like fun but i never participated. but i am definetly in on this one. as a matter of fact i will be shooting my xd service model, but i know alot of people would like to see the comparison between the service and sc so i will be sure to shoot a few targets with each, so any differences can be seen. sounds like fun and i can't wait to start. might take me a while, but i am definetly in!:)

edit: I just had a thought, maybe we should make this target the new standard for doing range reports so that way we are all on the same page and know the dimensions of the target. so the playing field will be even. this will give everyone a better idea of the accuracy of the new guns that we buy and report on.

I have 2 problems, first my new pistol hasn't arrived from the shipper yet! When it does, I'm not sure when I'll be able to take it out. Second, I can only print grayscale, would that be acceptable???

MAN!! I wanna try this!!!

I can only print grayscale
That's not a problem. I was mostly concerned that we were all shooting the same size/style target so we have an apples to apples kind of comparison. Also I don't see putting any time limit on this. Shoot and post when you can :D
