I have a Lee classic turret and am just not happy with the auto disc powder measurer.

What's a good replacement for it?

What bds says above.

What about it are you not happy with??

I am not sure if there is any adapter that would allow the use of another brand (say RCBS) on the the top of the press. There may be however.??

Looking at some Lee pieces and parts I have lying around. Does anyone know if the Lee Perfect Powder Measure would work using the powder through die which should currently be in use with the auto disk? Found two old perfect powder measures less the top covers, they must be around here somewhere? :)

Anyway, does anyone know if that combination would work?

Ron

The RCBS Uniflow powder measure with either the Hornady Case Activated Powder Drop or the RCBS version of the CAPD works perfectly well on top of the Lee Classic Turret press. It balances well and and is a great measure for powders the Lee Pro Auto Disk doesn't handle well.

That said, if you're using a ball powder, the Lee Pro Auto Disk is as good as anybody's, regardless of how much you paid for it.

Note: With any brand of powder measure, they all benefit greatly from some tuning/clean up/polishing of various parts. Especially the more recently manufactured measures.

If you have the regular "Auto Disk", then the "Pro Auto Disk" would be a good replacement.
That is a very important difference. The Auto-Disk came with my press and i sold it off within weeks in favor of the Pro Auto-Disk. For not a lot of money it is a superior powder measure by far.

You might be able to use the Perfect Powder Measure with handgun cartridges with the Lee Universal Charging Die BUT, that die will nor expand the case mouth of handgun cartridges and is really meant for use with rifle cartridges.

The simple answer would be "no" but I suppose you can make it work if you must although I feel there are so many other better choices available.

I have gone the other way with the Lee Rifle Charging Die and a Pro Auto-Disk kit for charging .223 cases.

I've been using the Lee Pro Auto disk with the double disk kit. I'm just tired of it dropping powder on the floor when using it. Seems to happen every so often. It is coming out of the disks. I have it all tight. I can not get a consistent drop either. Varies .4 grains at times. I'm not pushing max loads so it's not a huge issue but I would like a powder drop that is more consistent. I was using IMR 3031 to reload some .223 last week.

My regular lee auto disk was pretty good once I shaved down the sides of the hopper to reduce powder leakage but it would still bind up using fine ball powders like win296, h335, win 748 etc etc. the rubber gasket on the new lee pro solved that issue. I lose very little powder... I may see 5 or 10 flakes of powder on the bench after loading up a few hundred rounds.

Are you using the double disk kit spacers?

See posts #1, 10 and 13.

Hope this helps.

The larger of the two cavities on the double disk is on the bottom of the measure? Putting the larger cavity on top leaves a "shelf" between the top and bottom disks where powder can hang up.

I don't think the Lee Auto-Disk was developed to meter stick powders like IMR3031 but I could be wrong. That might be the reason for the .4gr variance. I think you're asking the tool to do something it wasn't made to do and blaming the tool for failure.

IMR 3031 is listed on the vmd sheet for Lee. Not sure if I want to get the charge bar or a totally different powder dropper.

Adjustable charge bar is a good option for stick rifle powders.

I load .308 and even use modified double charge bars to get charges double disk kit cannot drop (I metered around 47 grains of I4895/H4895/Varget and 48 grains of RL15 and I didn't even max out the adjustments) - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=9444436#post9444436

For those of you that are using the charge bar, are you using it on small volumes or large volumes. I have tried it on small volumes for my 380 and did not have very good luck with it.

To be honest, I don't think Lee Precision meant for the adjustable charge bar to be used for really small powder charges as I get inconsistent powder charge drops below 4.0 gr even with well metering W231/HP-38.

For dropping smaller powder charges, I now use modified Auto Disk with a screw that allows me to drop W231/HP-38 charges down to 2.0 gr with less than .1 gr variance, 1.5 gr with Bullseye and 2.5 gr with Titegroup - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=741988

I'm talking pistol for my charge bar suggestion.

i dont have trouble dropping 3031 with the PAD, i think an upgrade to the PAD would serve you fine.

With very small charges I have also found the adj charge bar doesn't work well. I am fairly sure it's because the charge hole created by the small spacing doesn't sit directly over the drop hole so you don't get a repeatable drop.

Take the hopper off and cycle the throw and look down the hole in the charge bar and you will see what I mean.

My cure was buying the Lee micro-disk but unfortunately they are no longer available from Lee. http://www.midwayusa.com/Product/441523/lee-pro-auto-disk-powder-measure-micro-disk-conversion-unit
There is a company making them aftermarket and you can find them in a google search.
